DePetro Debacle

First let me say that I cannot stand DePetro. This has nothing to do with politics, I just think he is very overrated and does not belong in a market the size of Boston (I thought he was pushing the radio-success envelope in Providence).

That being said:

His comment was on the money. While no innocent person deserves to be the victim of a crime, no less rape and murder, you have to employ a little common sense in not putting yourself in harms way. He simply pointed that out.

And when are we going to STOP quoting anyone who heard "from someone else" what was said on the air? Those third party accounts ALWAYS take a comment out of context and exaggerate intent. Have we learned NOTHING over the years?

I don't always agree with Depetro but this is one of the times I do agree with him.

I agree with both of your points, we are each responsibile for our own safety and in this day and age we should all be very very aware of our surroundings and not put ourselves in harms way. Women especially need to be very aware.

I for one cannot stand the third party accounts and from what I hear the woman from Jane Doe wrote an article about Depetro and didn't even listen to the show, I don't get it.

Yep, I've gotta agree. Depetro's voice and accent are like nails on chalkboard to me and his topic selection is often abhorrent.

But, he had a point this time. Looking for Mr. Goodbar in New York (or anyplace else) will get a young woman in trouble, sooner or later. Also, Depetro ended up getting a lot of free publicity by voicing such an opinion (free publicity - in this context - is a good thing).

For once, I'll stick up for him.

Let Deputrid's child be murdered and then see how he will react.

DePetro made the point that women, but especially young women,
need to be cautious about where they go and how they act because of
predators like we saw in this case.
He was speaking in relation to the brutal murder of a Boston grad student
in NY. She has been out partying in a bar until 4 o'clock in the morning,
in not the best part of town but that's not so relevant to me since serial killers go anywhere to hunt their victims and she left the place alone.
It was a horrible horrible crime.
It's also a fair commentary to say that 24 year olds should not be leaving
drinking establishments all alone in the dark of night.
DePetro did/said nothing wrong with his commentary.
Two of his three young children are girls.
DePetro is talking about the world they need to know about as they grow up.

The latest theory is that she may have been the victim of a fake cabdriver? Now if this is true... are you now going to say that women shouldn't be able to take cabs without fear of attack? The thing is your blaming the victim and not the criminal. It is a damn shame that women can't be safe in today's so called civilized society. Can women get into trouble..YES Is it their fault...No Also NY is not Boston and many people are in Bars early in the morning. Many folks don't even go out in New York till very late so assuming that she is a mess by the time when she was out could also be incorrect. We have no idea what happened to her so no one should be jumping to conclusions not Talk Show hosts not folks on the board. And if women are going to be scared to go to bars then so am I because they will be full of only men and i try to stay out of those bars.

PS. Joe, That ending line was just a lame attempt at thread closing humor and not an attack on you or anyone else....

I'm glad to see someone bring up the fact that in New York it's not unusual for nightspots to be open til the wee small hours. I've heard so many people with judgemnents about her, forgetting she's the victim.

Radio moment, in case you missed it: Yesterday, the two CBS Radio news staitons in NY (WCBS and WINS) each called upon their sister station in Boston, WBZ, to help them out with coverage of the wake. Different reports from WBZ's Lana Jones were running at the same time on the NY stations. Of course, you'd have to be jumping between stations to notice. So much for getting different voices on different stations, eh....?

I wonder if Sammy think's the over 100 boys raped by Father Geoghan deserved it. After all, weren't they putting themselves in harms way? If it sounds ludicrous, it's no more ridiculous than your neandethal comment that a woman deserves to be raped and strangled to death.

This is 2006. The notion that a woman is asking for it because she's walking alone went out years ago. It's a neanderthal macho notion to say as such.

It's hard for people to admit there are monsters out there, and especially men have problems admitting that other men act like animals. They'd rather blame the woman, saying it woudln't happen if she weren't seducing them by walking, than admit that some men in our society are beasts.

Actually, it's most places in the world that nightspots are open late. Only in Boston is last call at 1:30.
