Detroit Lions Fans Protest Nickelback Thanskgiving Halftime Performance

Yes, there's a thread on the Canada radio board - but since there's also a television facet to this, I'll throw it out here, as well:
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/n...out-nickelback-halftime-show-booking-20111103

Could you imagine if this petition actually worked? Would it be the first time that a scheduled performer at a sporting event was jettisoned due to public demand?

Of course, at the end of the day... it's only a regular season game - one that, granted, the undefeated Packers will likely win, anyway - and not the Super Bowl.

Yes, how dare they book Nickelback and not classic bands like Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, ? and the Mysterians, or Grand Funk Railroad (OK, they're actually from Ann Arbor, Bay City, and Flint, respectively, but that's still Detroit Lions country isn't it?). ;D

As long as they're within the 75-mile radius, they are indeed considered Lions territory!

Also... answering my own question in the original post - just remembered about this - yes, The Who ultimately performed, but it wouldn't be the first time a scheduled NFL performer faced backlash (in this case, of course, it can be deemed Nickelbacklash):

Nickelback to play or not play at halftime during Thanksgiving??? WOW we really have BIG problems to worry about!!!

i don`t see what the big deal is.i don`t care for nickleback . more to the point i am not not famular with nickleback but if they were chosen someone must like them.there are no universally liked bands that has no people who just hate them.

@Quadraphonic - I think that might be the argument that many of these Lions fans are making. I don't think the call to replace the halftime artist would be as strong was 2-6, as opposed to 6-2.

Of course, if the Lions did have a 2-6 record, Nickelback playing during halftime on Thanksgiving would just add insult to injury. ::)

Wow, with all the real problems the Detroit area has been facing, people are actually worried about what band performs at a football game? Makes you wonder...

I don't get it.

They are protesting because Nickelback is not from Detroit?
Because they are Canadian? Detroit is practically a part of Canada
anyhow (or at least they are more plugged-in to things Canadian than
any other American city where I've been)

From this reaction I thought they might have set fire to a US flag or
insulted our troops or something.

I have seen plenty of American acts play halftime at the Grey Cup
(though the best of any of them was Bachman-Turner Overdrive in Edmonton last year)
What a non-issue!

I don't like Nickelback. I've heard enough of their "music" to know this.

All I care about is which game is CBS showing? Because the Charlotte parade airs when the game doesn't. If CBS airs the late game, the parade is early. If CBS airs the early game, the parade is late and it's really weird when it gets dark and it's still light when the parade is still going on. Either way, it's no longer live.

Each year, the NFL rotates one AFC team visiting Dallas and Detroit (both NFC team cities). And the Lions game is usually played at 12:30 PM followed by the Cowboys game later on. Since both the Packers and the Lions are NFC teams, that means it will be a Fox game, and WBTV and all of the rest of the CBS stations will carry Miami at Dallas at 4 PM! So get ready for a dark parade! :D

I suppose they could get the cast of Hardcore Pawn to be the half-time entertainment. The father can yell and scream insutls at the audience and rip them off.

Lions lost big-time in Chicago yesterday; no word if they couldn't concentrate on the Bears because they were confounded by the confirmation of Nickelback playing on Thanksgiving.

LOL! So that was why they threw 6 interceptions!?! Explains a lot.

As a side note, I am delighted that Detroit is now doing so well economically that Nickelback's presence at a halftime show is their biggest concern. Clearly, the place must be a utopia now, right? ::)

No, that means the parade will precede the game. And it wouldn't be dark since it won't be live anyway.

Cheers & 73 ;D
