Detroit Radio Legend Retiring

Dick Purtan announced today that he will be retiring, effective march 26th. My hats off to him for making such a major impact on Detroit radio. I wish him a very long and happy retirement!

Ditto! WHAT now though? i imagine the show stays in the Purtan family with his daughter, right...

Nope, that's not what I was told. Big Al, Rebekah AND Jackie are all leaving as well. I believe Jackie also works as a comedian or something, along side her radio career. Tim Roberts, PD at OMC surely has a big task ahead of him. I can't even imagine who the new crew maybe. I doubt it, but it wouldn't suprise me if Dr. Don from WYCD, moves down the hall and replaces Purtan.

Seems apparent to me after viewing a raw, unedited TV interview (with Guy Gordon) on the web this morning that maybe Dick was "encouraged" to retire by the corporate folks.

Companies are dumping longtime, big name morning shows across the country in response to Arbitron's PPM. Dick mentioned in the interview that listeners seem to prefer radio stations that play more music in the mornings these days and are less interested in the type of show he's known for.

Perhaps, the most telling comments were made when the formal interview was over, but the tape was still rolling.  It was then that he tells of fighting the powers that be to keep various members of his team on board over the past few years.

See it here:  http://www.clickondetroit.com/video/22534252/index.html

Notice the comments made at about 12:30 mark in the interview.

Huge shoes to fill, no doubt. I remember him from CKLW days.
what years was purtan at cklw? must have been the "Post Big 8 days".... i don't remember him from cklw at all.

Roughly 1978 to 1983. Tom Ryan supplied most of the charachter voices, and hosted solo for about a year after Purtan left for the FM dial.

Gr8oldies, maybe before your time, but Purtan spent some time at WSAI early in his career to as I recall. Also, in Syracuse at WOLF.

Your missing alot of his career. I first heard him on WKNR ( 1310) in Dearborn had to be about 1964 when they went top 30. I believe he was one of the originals along with Bob Green and Gary Stevens and Frank Kinsmen. Then he moved to WXYZ 1270 then CKLW or the other way around

Purtan was doing a basically a "Talk-Show" on womc...was there a time he did a more Music Intensive Morning Show in his career?
nobody can "Replace" him, so, do you think they will put on another "Talk" show or one that plays more music?

Not likely, Who Dat. Companies are dumping "talk" type shows on their music stations in reaction to Arbitron's PPM rating system. It's happening all across the country. Supposedly, more music-type morning shows are turning up with better ratings in the new PPM methodology.

(Not to mention, it's cheaper to staff a music-intensive show than to continue paying a guy like Dick Purtan and a large support cast).

Dick even mentions the supposed change in listener's tastes in the interview that I posted the link to earlier in this thread.

My guess is it will be more music intensive with a personality well known to the audience.

True that! Purtan managed to maintain the audience that had followed him pretty much his entire career, but the younger demographic that Oldies stations are trying to attract by dropping "Oldies" monikers and infusing more 80's based hits in their playlists, is not going to come if they don't get a morning show that evolves with the music rotation. Nonetheless, I liked Purtan and felt that he and his staff worked hard to create an interactive and entertaining show. Hopefully, he can retire comfortably and spend time sleeping in for a change. He deserves a break.

I'm not up on who is working in Detroit these days either at WOMC or elsewhere. Who is being talked about?

There hasen't been anyone offically named as a morning host, just rumors. People are speculating that maybe Jim Johnson might take over mornings, some say Chris Edmonds and Stacy DuFord will (they are currently doing a sunday midday show on OMC). We'll soon find out.....

Purtun did jock music when he was on WKNR,,it was one of the funniest things you ever heard,,,he's start a record then stop it and say something like " I didn't mean to play that" It was all anti what was being done in the day but he made it so funny you didn't care.
