DFW's Friday night storms

looks like everybody is in full focus talking storms tonight

except I am not picking up Channel 4 on my antenna here in Navarro County, and they can not pick it up on cable in town either

News 8 was on top of it. They had the first pictures of tornado damage, and all the info about the tornado threat. NBC5 had the first reporter at the damage site. CBS 11 had neither, just Burger Jabber. Didn't look at 4 much. The guy on 33 made some comment about how the stations share information, which I took to mean he ws getting his stuff from Troy and Finfrock. 27 was off the air. I stayed on 8, til I lost interest.

8 only had pics from a cell phone, You missed 11 being on the scene before the others ,then they switched to Mike explaining it.

4 was down most of the storms. Power outage downtown and somehow the UPS/Generator didn't switch. For some reason, I only watched 8 all evening :p

Fox 4 had some kind of major problem due to the storm. It appears to me that the station was hit by lightning. 4 and 27 came back up with network programming around 7 or so. It looks like they just took a straight feed from a sat dish of the network into the transmitter at cedar hill until they could sort out what was going on at the station in downtown Dallas.

Overall, I'd say all the stations did a pretty good job. There were pros and cons to each:

Channel 8 had video of damage first, but seemed to focus on that too much while the storm was still causing damage in other parts of the area. I saw way too much of the damaged Minyards in Haltom City while the strong storm was blasting into my neighborhood.

Channel 4 had some REALLY good video of what looked to me like a tornado on the ground at the site where Scott Sayres was reporting from early in the evening. They lost out when they went off the air for about a half hour or so, but seem to have recovered well tonight.

Channel 5 had good information early on and into prime time, but inexplicably cut away to NBC programming at around 7:45 or so.

Channel 11's news information and storm spotter stuff was great, but Kristine just has no credibility during severe weather. She was tentative and seemed confused at time. Mike Burger was much better and so was Gary Seith from TXA-21.

Big props to Channel 33's Bob Goosman. He cut in to programming around 6:15 or so and stayed with it into prime time for a bit. They were very limited in their information though because they didn't have that many people out on the streets. It was primarily just Goosman and his radar. He did well. They went back to wrestling around 7:20 once the worst had passed. It's just rare to see CW33 actually serve the public this way. Kudos to them.

WFAA was too focused on that damned minyards store in haltom city, like they were sponsoring the weather cast.

KTVT, please lock kristine in a closet when any type of adverse weather hits town. Like Mike Berger handle up business from now on.

KDAF, Huge props to Weather Bob for his great handling of the situation, seeing that CW and their one field camera was being cleaned at the time.

+ 1 I agree

I focused on NBC-5 most of the night and couldn't understand why Mike Snyder and Jane McGarry kept talking over top David Finfrock. It was a remarkably uncharacteristic poor job by Finfrock and James Aydelott.

I did flip around occasionally and caught CBS-11 (and agree with the comments about Kristine Kahanek). I have to say Gary Seith did much better than the amateurish confines of TXA-21 would have caused me to believe he could. My question is who at Channel 11 decided to add that Cirro Energy sponsorship to the radar? Did someone in management just decide, "You know, we have all that wasted radar space that just shows different colors, why not make it like NASCAR and sell a sponsorship?" Seems rather tacky to me for a station that generally tries pretty hard to stay a little classier.

Just when I thought Khristine was finally coming around, settling down, handling severe outbreaks, she disappoints. Mike ,thankfully was around,to handle it in a calm professional matter. Khristine should be relagated to 4pm and Let Mike be the main go to guy.

I thought all of KTVT's weather coverage was B-A-D. Mike Burger didn't know how to run the radar...things seemed a little better when Jeff Jamison came in behind the scenes. Kristine was scatter-brained per usual. And Garry Seith mispronounces every city he utters and has the annoying lisp.

Hey, which would you rather have?

A. Fun and yuks with KK trying to show her weather acumen as Berger has the big brain, but not all the tech talent in the world.
B. Maria Sotolongo and her vocal coach going through the weather.
C. Barnhill's creep eye (but agreed... Kudos to Goosman, a hidden gem int his market).
D. Delkus boring us with tears about his ancedotal stories during what's the haps in Gun Barrel City.

;D

Did anyone else notice the kudo's that Troy gave Pete as Troy was going to go home for the evening. It was soooooo sappy and soooooo typical WFAA management, it wasn't even funny.

Looks like they had rehearsed it for days. They were just waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it.

I happened to be watching when they did that. It was kind of like a rerun of when he handed over the clicker to work the weather maps at 10PM.

SPEAKING OF CH.8 If you want to watch the storm video on their website,here is one of the selections...I kid thee not;
"Mav fans fun for cover"

Back in the day, when I was young, and Dallas news was actually watchable...

Wait, that was when they actually had news on. Instead of cloning cattle, maybe A&M should clone Marty. Then again, who in this generation (besides those on this board) would watch?
