DG makes a few additions

I'm not sure I would have realized these as "newbies" to the DG playlist unless Carl or Jeff had not mentioned it after they were played: "Eye in the Sky" by the Alan Parsons Projects, "Captain of Her Heart" by Double and "Believe it Or Not" by Joey Scarbury were added in the last few days. All fit the list fairly well, IMO, and seem to inch them further into 80s soft AC. Will be interesting to see if any other new tunes pop up over the coming days.

Because it's all many markets have as far as standards goes, especially since Citadel's Timeless died and a number of the Timeless stations switched to DG's format. I personally like the mix but then again I'm more a fan of the easier '50s-'80s oldies than of the traditional big band/nostalgia sound.

I remember the Double song being played on WAAM in Ann Arbor, which ran what was at that time Westwood One Standards on weekends, around 2002-03 or so.

That said, DG has made some strange choices as far as '80s music goes. Not long ago, "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John was part of the playlist; not sure if it still is though certainly Olivia's softer songs are indeed very much played still. Not an '80s song but it still surprised me to hear this one played on the stream of DG station WDEA in Ellsworth, ME, a couple of days ago: "These Eyes" by the Guess Who.

"These Eyes" has been on a while. Jeff Rollins always has to make it into an Abbott and Costello routine.

I heard "You Can Do Magic" by America. I'm distressed by all these 80s songs I didn't lie then and don't like now. But at least they haven't backed off the real standards and even seem to be playing more. I heard something that sounded like Perry Como with instrumentals like circus music. And a new-sounding vocal version of "Autumn Leaves".

Another one I heard: "Time Passages" by Al Stewart. I always liked that one.

Also, I don't know how long this one has been around: "Love Is the Answer" by England Dan and John Ford Coley. The local power company would play an instrumental version of that one when you got put on hold. I sort of like it as an instrumental but it's too noisy as a vocal.

I heard "Time Passages" last week. It was nice to hear it again. And "Love is the Answer" was just played this morning. THAT one really surprised me!! Robert John's "Sad Eyes" has been heard a few times too. It has those heavy guitar solos.

By the way, I heard the local power company's other song the other day, "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" by The Spinners. If you got put on hold long enough (which could happen during a major outage event) you'd hear both songs. Maybe multiple times.

This morning, "You Can Do Magic" was followed by "Wives and Lovers" by Jack Jones. Tommy Lee Jones ran through my kitchen and asked where Indiana Jones was.

Did I hear That's All by Genesis? Or, was that a local insert?

I believe you heard it.

I heard "Games People Play" (Spinners) this morning. ;D

Actually what makes all these "new" additions sound even newer (in THIS area) is that on ONE of the 3 regional stations that Dial Global is heard, they only carry the service part-time. They have Jeff in the mornings, but go local at Noon (Mon-Fri) and their regular format is standards from the 40's, 50's & 60's!! -- with special programs devoted to the way radio was BEFORE television. On weekends they go local at 10AM, and don't go back to DG until 7pm. Note to VCHIMPANZEE I think this would be your deam station ;) Anyway, that's quite a contrast when you take into account some of what DG is airing now.

Quite a few of the additions to the playlist rotation (and there have been many in the past month) are reminiscent of the old Timeless Classics format before it went defunct. Heard recently:

One of a Kind Love Affair by the Spinners
Turn Turn Turn by The Byrds
Candida by Tony Orlando & Dawn
Love Can Make You Happy by Mercy
Ode to Billy Joe by Bobbie Gentry
Save It For a Rainy Day by Stephen Bishop
You Didn't Have to Be So Nice by the Lovin' Spoonful
Sooner or Later by The Grass Roots
Who Loves You by The Four Seasons
The Wedding by Julie Rogers
Love Grows Where Rosemary Goes by Edison Lighthouse

These weren't there?

Of course, I would be happier without The Byrds and that Bobbie Gentry song. Wait, I may be wrong. Is that the one where they are saying "Pass the biscuits" and other normal breakfast conversation in the middle of talking about what happened?

I heard "Mercy Mercy Me" by Marvin Gaye. I guess that's okay.

And yet I still hear "Friendly Persuasion" by Pat Boone which seems like it should be so out of place.

Gloria Gaynor - "Never Can Say Goodbye"
Spinners - "Games People Play"
Billy Paul - "Me & Mrs. Jones" (had they played that before?)
How `Bout Us - "Champaign"?

Some good stuff there. But I STILL love Johnny Mathis, Dionne Warwicke, Tony Bennett et al.

Yes, definitely. Good song. It's really the violins I like.

That one's good too.

Yeah, it still sounds like Dial Global standards. It's not a complete change in philosophy like Timeless Classics but some of this new stuff does sound like a train wreck.

I hope not. I heard that at Sears the last time I was there, and while I stayed for quite some time when the music was off, I wanted out of there. But I was paying my credit card bill and that took time.

My local Timeless Classics station would sometimes add The Beach Boys' "Fun Fun Fun" or something during a commercial break. Sometimes the songs were short and they'd run a commercial or two. But Bud Buschardt, at the time, said no, they weren't plkaying that one.

I heard Jeff play "Turn Down Day" (The Cyrkle) this morning :D THAT was a surprise... since the last time I heard it was when Timeless Favorites was still going!!

Others played in the last few days:
"Tracks of My Tears" by The Miracles
"Wonder of You" by Elvis Presley
"One In a Million You" by Larry Graham
"More Today Than Yesterday" by Spiral Starecase
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Matthew Morrison and Gwyneth Paltrow (Very nice -- uses an arrangement similar to the popular Kamakawiow'ole version)
"Walk -- Don't Run" by The Ventures
"I Love You Porgy" by Nina Simone
"Rainy Day People" by Gordon Lightfoot
"Charade" by Henry Mancini (a very nice surprise)

"That's All" by Genesis has definitely been added.

I've heard these many times but it could have been on Timeless Classics.

I like the first one. I heard it a few months ago on WAVO, which was a Jones affiliate which, according to someone on this site, added the entire Jones collection to their hard disk. Definite thumbs down on the second. It needs to go. They need to say "that's all" to Genesis.
