Diamond Sports loses another team.

The Florida Panthers have signed a multi-year deal for all non-nationally televised games to air on Scripps owned WSFL-TV 39 in Miami, leaving Bally Sports Florida behind. The games will also air in West Palm Beach on WHDT-TV 9, and a soon to be announced station in the Ft. Meyers market .
Could other NHL teams follow?

I suspect WXCW-TV 46 will be the southwest Florida home of the Florida Panthers.

By the way: It's spelled "Fort Myers."

It will likely end up on a subchannel of an outlet there. Scripps relayed the Vegas Golden Knights to all their Idaho and Montana stations on all their x.2 channels.

That's 4 of the 24 US NHL teams to have games over there...
  • Vegas went first with Scripps' KMCC "Vegas 34" to go over the air. The games were simulcast on Scripps' KUPX "Utah 16" Salt Lake City and the .2 of their ID and MT stations.
  • Coyotes went next with Scripps' KASW "Arizona 61" and simulcast on Scripps' KWBA Tucson and on KUPX on days without a Vegas conflict. The team is relocating to Salt Lake City, so KUPX will take over airing all the games.
  • Seattle earlier announced Tenga's KING/KONG will carry their games. Presumably, most games on independent KONG rather than preempting NBC on KING.
  • Scripps now has the Panthers.
The Blackhawks, Bulls, and White Sox announced they would be creating a new network called Chicago Sports Network, that it says would have OTA coverage, but it didn't list with who or the details...so maybe there are 5 teams...

It looks like a few teams dipped their toes last season with the Red Wings putting a few games on Scripps' WMYD 20.

It will be interesting if any more move especially with the Ballys RSN Chapter 11 maybe heading to some sort of conclusion later this month?

A tweet was posted in the DFW TV board last night stating that Bally Sports Southwest has terminated its contract with the Dallas Stars. I’ve not seen any confirmation of that from other sources, though info is likely scarce on a holiday.

As a Dallas Stars fan living in the market who doesn't have BSSW, that would be awesome. Last season, the suburban Allen Americans minor league hockey team had some of their weekend games on CW KDAF 33.1. It's kind of something an ECHL team has access to more households than the NHL team...

It will be interesting the details if this is true.

I **believe** the contract was coming up anyways. If I recall, the Stars had a 10 or 11 year deal that started in 2014 and made at a time where the RSNs were escalating their fees to get all the games. So, it surely, like the Rangers contract BSSW has been fighting over this past year, is too rich for BSSW now.

Another option may be is they don't have much of a choice. There seems to be really bad blood between the Rangers, MLB, and Ballys...I can't imagine the Rangers want to come back. Cuban, although no longer the majority owner, has said something to effect of wanting Mavs games moved OTA; they got 10 games on WFAA last season. If the Mavs also planning to walk some or all the games to OTA, BSSW would be down to just the Stars, and that would not be a sustainable offering... They had that problem in Arizona where the fight with the Diamondbacks netted the games moving off the Ballys RSN there to streaming and the Suns opting to go completely OTA there. Essentially, it left them only with the Coyotes, which wouldn't be remotely sustainable, so they folded the Ballys Arizona RSN.

I suspect that Minnesota Wild will be one of the teams Scripps Sports will be getting, given that KPXM used to air Stars games back when it was KXLI and also when the Stars were located in Minnesota. But who knows if it will actually happen. I won't be surprised if Scripps Sports doesn't get the Wild

Nothing is an official yet, it might be in the news tomorrow.

And the Stars did say goodbye this week in court: Stars’ Local TV Deal Goes Supernova as Team and RSN Agree to Split. I guess the next step is to see where they land...it says they are working on a streaming option and possibly a local TV outlet. Most of the other teams that moved did a similar combo of local TV and app...hopefully, they don't go app only like the MLB teams have been doing.

11 NHL teams that are on Bally Sports ends up terminated their television deal and transferred teams to a different channel:

Ducks - Fox
Stars - Either Paramount/CBS, Nexstar, or Fox
Red Wings - Either Paramount/CBS or Scripps
Panthers - Scripps (Confirmed)
Blues - Nexstar
Kings - Paramount/CBS - Full time
Lightning - Either Paramount/CBS or Nexstar
Predators - Unknown
Wild - Either Fox, Sinclair, or Hubbard
Blue Jackets - Unknown
Hurricanes - Unknown

As for the 15 NBA teams could end up terminated their television deal and transferred teams to a different channel:

Hawks - Either Paramount/CBS or Gary
Cavaliers - Gary
Mavericks - Either Paramount/CBS, Tenga, Fox, or Nexstar
Pistons - Either Paramount/CBS or Scripps
Pacers - Unknown
Clippers - Nexstar - Full time
Heat - Paramount/CBS (Likely)
Grizzlies - Unknown
Pelicans - Gary
Thunder - Griffin Media
Bucks - Weigel
Timberwolves - Either Hubbard, Sinclair, or Fox
Spurs - Tenga - Full time
Magic - Cox
Hornets - Cox

I would say Scripps in definitely in the hunt for an LA Team. They recently switched KILM-TV 64 from Bounce to Scripps News in what seems like a placeholder move. Nextstar has one major hurdle in taking the Clippers full time ...the CW. They are all in on this network, and not likely to move it to another non-owned channel in the LA Market

A few months ago, Scripps hired some consultants to explore the sale of Bounce, according to CNBC. Apparently, there was interest in from some parties about looking to buy it, so they hired some consultants to explore that. So, that may have played into moving Scripps News in its place perhaps?

They also did the flip to Scripps News move in Columbus and Raleigh. Since there's no NBA teams in both of those mentioned cities, they are in the hunt to get the broadcasting rights to the NHL teams in their respective TV markets.

Paramount Global has been carried a series of NHL games during the 2023-24 season part time. Would the Dallas Stars becoming the first NHL team to sign with Paramount Global/CBS?

Also last season, Paramount Global didn't get involved with the NBA as teams signed with Gary, Scripps, Nexstar, Tenga, and more. As of right now, no NBA teams got terminated their contract with Bally Sports but it could change leading up to the confirmation hearing at the end of the current month. Over the next few weeks, we will see more teams ending their contract with Bally early and switches to free TV, streaming services, or both.

I've seen that spelling in posts (mostly on Facebook) from people who are vacationing or have just returned from vacationing there!

We might see dozen of professional sports teams could be leaving cable soon.

It's hard to say what the future is...lot of things are in flux getting DSG's Chapter 11. Who knows, maybe they come up with a viable plan that keeps them going, although it is not looking great. Bally Sports San Diego and Bally Sports Arizona are already shutdown.

The Dallas Stars and DSG parted ways in court this week...so that's another NHL team they've lost. With that, it would seem the future of Bally Sports Southwest is not bright. There was bad blood already between DSG and the Texas Rangers and MLB in general... that contract ends at the end of this season; it would be shocking if the Rangers didn't go someplace else. Although no longer the majority owner, Mark Cuban has said several times about wanting to go some place else more visible with the Dallas Mavericks and be off Bally Sports Southwest.

As of today, the NHL is kind of the leader with two teams already over the air and three more going there this fall. If the Stars go to a local station, that would be a 6th: Keep Your Eyes On The Puck.

The main owners in the Twin Cities are CBS corporate, Fox corporate, Hubbard and Tegna. Looks like Sinclair runs the CW and Scripps owns the Ion station. But when you get to outstate Minnesota and the Dakotas, those don't have much of a presence in the other markets, so you'd have to do a second deal to get it every where else that currently gets Bally Sports North. Gray is the only one present in all those markets.
