Diamond Sports loses another team.

It was all over Fox 11 this morning. The station will be producing the games and the LA based shows for Victory +. Well, for those who wanted Fox Sports back ....
It remains to be seen if Diamond challenges this in court.

Bally Sports So Cal just have the clippers and the west coast conference sports left. time to fold it and move them to Bally Sports west

I've seen people speculate about that, but I haven't seen anything official and there is no release or mention of it on WFAA's website this evening about a deal. I think the judge would have to approve the filing from each party (DSG and the Mavs) before the Mavs could sign a deal elsewhere and announce it.

I'm just not sure how a deal with WFAA works without causing a problem with ABC over network programming preemptions.

Parent Tegna signed a OTA deal with the NHL's Seattle Kraken this summer to move their games over the air. Tegna owns NBC affiliate KING-TV 5 and independent KONG 16 there. KING-TV will air a few games; the bulk will be on KONG. The big TV networks do not want their affiliates regularly pre-empting their prime time shows, which is why KONG will get the bulk of them.

In New Orleans, the contract with Fox affiliate WVUE 8 is to put the bulk of the games on WVUE 8.2, its Bounce TV subchannel, which does have cable carriage. Again, to not anger Fox by preempting programming regularly. Bounce has some viewership...to the point Scripps is weighing options from parties interested in buying it.

For WFAA, where do the games go? None of the WFAA 8.x subchannels have wide cable carriage or viewership. Tegna does own another station in the market, but unlike KONG, it is Estrella TV KMPX. I'm not clear how much it programs it -- Tegna bought it in order to eventually swap the licenses to get WFAA off the VHF band onto the better (for digital signal propagation) UHF band. Once KMPX is moved to digital 8 spectrum, Estrella has the right to purchase KMPX back.
well well, TENGA wins...

I wonder will the Mavericks try Victory+ or will the Stars simulcast their Victory+ games on KMPX to add an OTA element.

Here's the Press Release from WFAA not behind a paywall. Dallas Mavericks, WFAA sign multi-year deal to broadcast games over-the-air for free

FAQ for the Mavericks deal with TEGNA: FAQ: Everything you need to know about how to watch the Dallas Mavericks on WFAA

Wonder how this arrangement will work in the future, with the possible deal for Estrella to purchase the WFAA RF8 license with WFAA moving to the current KMPX RF30. That is supposed to happen by the end of 2025, if Estrella (or new operator MediaCO) decides to exercise that option.
contracts can be amended....for the right price. But where is the current programming going on KMPX. Evidently Tegna is working with another broadcaster to make the Spanish programming on a main channel instead of a digital channel. Any ideas on who that may be? KSTAR?. Its wonderful to see the Mavericks OTA again. Will Tegna move some operations to the old TXCN building or will it be at the AAC.

Of course all channels are now digital, main or otherwise.😉

My initial thought was that Estrella would get moved to another 29.x subchannel, but then you have the issues with video providers likely not carrying any KMPX subchannels.

Guess we will soon find out if Estrella will exercise the channel purchase and swap option for WFAA RF8. If Estrella winds up somewhere else, it would probably mean they have decided not to carry out that plan.

They have issues with providing the .1 channel. They are must carry for legacy cable systems but not vMVPD. YouTubeTV, for example, does not carry them KMPX.

I just hope the Stars figure out they should have an OTA element. Of all the NBA and NHL teams to exit their RSN, all of gone an OTA station with a streaming option. Only the Stars have opted to not have an OTA element.

MLB has a different strategy...Padres and Diamondbacks went to the MLB's app...but for a subscription fee; it's not free. The Stars are opting to have a free streaming app. Maybe the Cowboys could get away with putting their games on new app for free and generate revenue from ad dollars from a large enough audience to make it worthwhile. For teams in D/FW not named the Cowboys, that seems hard to imagine.

The Cowboys can’t do that. The NFL has a national TV package that is shared amount the member clubs. That includes streaming as well. They only do local TV during the pre season. Now as far as radio is concerned, you can listen to games via the Dallas Cowboys app and the Audacy app. But that’s only available in the Dallas DMA.

TuneIn Premium has all the NFL games nationwide. Not 100% free, but cheap enough.

EDIT: Disregard. They put it behind geofencing. Local markets only now.

Of course, the Cowboys can't do that now because of the contract. I was trying to draw out that it would seem the size of fanbase that would be necessary in order to make having a free app that generates revenue for the team from commercials would have to be one like the size of the Cowboys fanbase. I think in this market they are the only one that have enough fans to make such a model work...

KMPX is not Must-Carry. They elected Retransmission Consent not Must-Carry.

Thanks for correcting. I think they were, but obviously once Tegna bought it, they opted for retransmission. Which is probably why they aren't on a lot of systems because there aren't a lot of people protesting if KMPX is missing from the line up. Maybe there will be more demand since the Mavs will be there...
