Dick Meeder dead

Dick Meeder, former GM of 96 Rock, died after surgery yesterday.
Dick was before my time at 96 Rock but I heard all the stories.....what a lucky guy to manage one of the most insane staffs in Atlanta radio history.....

Dick was a great guy....Originated the famous "Kent Card" that kept us all eating in the early days!
God Bless him.

Sad news. Dick was one of a kind. Do you have any more information? There is nothing in the obituaries. My condolences to his family.

A reception will follow the funeral.

This has been a terrible shock and the family has been bombarded with calls and visits by concerned friends. It is understandable that they would ask that we not call or visit but would rather let them use this time before the funeral to grieve privately. They would very much enjoy receiving cards from members that want to express their sorrow for her loss.

While I never worked for Dick, I had the pleasure of meeting him on numerous occasions through friends. What a wonderful man. He will be sorely missed. My prayers go out to his wife, Betty, and his family.

Dick was my first boss in the world of radio back in 1989 at Traffic Scan. I worked part time there and at Power 99 under Bill Phippen. If ever you were to break into radio at that time no two better people could have guided you than Bill and Dick. Although he made my fat ass play Santa at every Christmas party I got him back by leaving a post it note about my raise we discussed on his desk. Of course we never really discusssed one but I got it anyway because he said it was a creative way to get ahead. He helped me through some very tough times in life as well as being a wonderful boss. He will be greatly missed and my prayers go out to his lovely wife Betty and the children. At least he was met by the human dictionary Keith Kalland at the pearly gates. God Bless my friend and PS...I never gave back my Kent card.

I too worked for Dick back in the late 70's. He was a great guy to work for. His son Richard was working there, too! Richard taught me some "bass licks." "Skinny" Bobby Harper was doing mornings. It was a time when the radio station was just beginning to cook. I remember to the party we had when the station got double digits in the ratings. Dick was extremely proud of his troops.
I also worked for Bill Phippen. These two gentlemen were the best and I mean VERY BEST men I've ever worked for in this business. Other "wannabes" can take a lesson from the way they conducted themselves. I too never turned in my Kent Card.

What a great man and a terrible loss. I had the pleasure of competing against Dick when I was at Metro in the late 80's, and then working with Dick after we bought trafficscan.

I will never forget, Dick getting lost taking us to the Atlanta airport after we had bought trafficscan, and me having to explain to my bosses, that yes the guy who just got lost and made us miss our flights, was the guy we wanted to run our Atlanta office!

Condolences to the family. And yes, I still have my Kent Card sitting in my desk. I have no idea why I kept it.

Some of my greatest radio lesson's learned, were on the balcony of the TrafficScan HQ on Pharr Rd smoking cigarettes with the master.
He allowed me to roam the halls of 96rock when I was an eager youngster (hanging out with my dear departed friend Susan Sullivan), then I had the pleasure of working with him and all the great people at TrafficScan ( Jim, Keith, Crash, Cheryl, Greg, Craig & Joy). A class act in every way. Dick was a total business guy who "got it" when it came to radio. Not many of those left. A true radio treasure who will be sorely missed,
My thoughts and prayers to the family and extended family.

Bill Summerville

Dick was indeed a great guy who was a key player in an era when radio was still FUN! It's very sad to see another class act depart the scene.

Back in the old days (the 80's), when I was on 94Q, Dick's son used to play in a band featured at the old Timothy John's just outside the perimeter on Roswell Road. I'd sometimes host promotional nights at TJ's for 94Q, and Dick was often there showing family support. He was the competitor's General Manager, 96 Rock, yet was always amazingly gracious, friendly, and nice to me, every time he saw me. That lesson stuck with me. Back then, the attitude was much more "kill the competition" than it is today, in this time of sometimes multiple competitors sharing studio space and working for the same company because of consolidation. Yet there he was, buying me drinks! Wow.

Dick stood out because of his down-to-earth nature and his big heart. My condolences to the family.

There's a very nice article in today's ajc in addition to his obituary.
