Did all the main (9) Houston stations have aux back then?

I dont realy know much about the history of Houston radio tech part, but if I remember when last year when they took the main tower off line, I couldnt recieve any of the 9 radiostations that was on it (Out at Lavaca county...), now I can with the Aux site. Did they use to just shut them off to low power on the main tower? I knew they would be completely dead out in my area for about 2 weeks or so.<P ID="signature">______________

KILT-FM's back-up was on the Shell Bldg, as many of the others. KHJZ(KIKK-FM)'s back-up tower was on San Felipe.

94.5 The Buzz is on their aux tower? I noticed something strange on my truck radio, that if I put the dial setting to 94.9, I can hear The Buzz bleeding over that far, normally it would bleed over to 94.7, which is the adjacent channel or frequency.

Not to change the subject but the Pirate broadcasting on 94.9 somewhere in NW Houston north of Oak Forest is still on the air. 94.5 The Buzz barely cuts in on them!

The nine stations normally on the Senior Road master antenna have been on their Aux sites during the SR upgrade for IBOC.

I'm in Cy-Fair and I've been hearing exactly the same thing, lots of slopover of KTBZ a good 400khz above 94.5. Must be some problems with the Aux site--not present when they are on the SR tower. Definitely NOT a receiver mixing product.

The backup antenna on Shell (the original master antenna downtown) has been shot and leaks gas for a while...If any aux tried to fire up into it, they were lucky if they didnt have to reduce power or watch it burn up!! 95.7's backup on San Felipe was limited to low ERP (Only a 3 bay antenna IIRC)...105.7's back up is there now...10kw solidstate Continental

Stations do have a single bay aux antenna on Sr Rd at 1000ft...but that precludes any major work on the tower if they are hot....when the major rebuild of the lines in the mid 90s happened, most went to the aux bays or those with aux sites were on them (KHMX, etc)...NOW with the IBOC rebuild, they HAD to go somewhere else...and with the American and Richland towers sitting there, there was plenty of antenna space now for high ERP/Height aux...in DFW, few stations had decent auxs until the 39 tower fell in 96...suddenly EVERYONE was building out decent aux stations..Richland's new 2000ft tower there helped even though it was primarily built for TV.

Am curious WHEN the migration started happening away from "One Shell Plaza". I remember being in the market in early 1970's when stations (including ours', 102.1) were making a huge deal out of having their stick on that new bldg. Channel 26, I believe, also was up there. When visiting this summer was blown away at the very tall antenna farm located in S.W. Hou off the toll road. First thought I had is "who has the guts to go up there and maintain those things!!!?" Any history you can offer would be very interesting!! Thanks!
