Did anyone notice Marty Brennaman swearing on air?

On Saturday afternoon 4/19's Reds broadcast (which I heard on XM Satellite Radio), Marty Brennaman said a ball was called on a Milwaukee Brewers batter in the top half of the first inning. I think it was Jeff Brantley who said after that, "I think it was a strike", and then Marty went off-mike (but didn't pot it down all the way) and said, "Don't you ever f***ing challenge me!" It sounded as if Marty and Jeff were having a heated argument, which could be barely heard for close to 12 seconds before XM came in with an "MLB on XM" bumper, then Marty, sounding noticeably irritated, returned to call the game.

I have always enjoyed hearing Marty and Jeff, but was shocked when I heard this. Marty sounded like Harry Doyle in Major League. Did anyone else hear this?

I did not hear this particular time but have some great stuff on tape of Marty from years ago attempting to cut some promo's for the affiliates for the following days game. One that comes to mind after an extra inning late night:

"F*** it. I'm goin' home"

I miss Joe btw. There was always something about tuning in after all the years from being gone from the area and hearing those two. I know I am not the only one and have read some great tributes here and on other boards.

Your absolutely right,,,,your recollection of those few seconds is SPOT ON. The play by play resumed as normal including the "casual and friendly On Air banter" between Marty and Jeff. I found this very odd considering what I (and you) had just previously heard.
If you recall, at the end of the rant, the volume faded down at the last second. I thought at first that someone back at "Deathstar 45249 " had reacted and turned down Marty's mic at the last second. But now I think that it was an out-take that somehow made it out on the air at that coinscidencial moment! Either way, Marty did say those words.....

I heard that exchange as well. I thought Marty said something to that effect. Like don't challenge me or something like that. I was a bit shocked that it was picked up on air. It did seem like volume cut out towards the end of it. I didn't really understand what was going on.

I hear it too and also thought I heard someone off mic say "........and Dusty Baker callled.........." But Marty definately was telling someone to not challenge him. It was either Brantley or someone else in the box.

does anyone know approximately/or specifically when in the game this exchange supposedly took place?

It was early in the game, 1st or 2nd inning. Marty was in the middle of the call, Jeff hadn't worked the 3rd yet. And I don't think Marty yelling AT Jeff because the conversation immediatily after (and through the rest of the game) was upbeat. But someone got their hat handed to them,,,

So other people DID hear this too! It was 1:19 on my car radio when I heard the exchange, and yes, you're right about the part about Dusty Baker calling. Couldn't exactly figure out what the exchange was all about or who was all involved, but the F-Bomb was quite clear, even though it was "off mic."

I grew up idolizing Marty Brennaman; quite honestly, seeing what he did every day with the Reds made me want to get into the media. But the last week has me extremely disappointed - first his idiotic and mostly off-base rant generalizing all Cubs fans as drunken morons (some of us are but not nearly all of us), and now this. Geez. Maybe he does need a break. Or some discipline.

Marty has been off his rocker for a few years now. He seems to enjoy being a singing sock puppet/email reader/ranter more than a baseball announcer, and it shows in his performance. On the rare occasions I listen to the games on radio, it sounds like there are a million other places he'd rather be. He also seems to hate a good deal of the players both professionally and personally.

Seems like another case of Cincinnati Elvis syndrome, a guy surrounded by yes men who don't have the guts to question their leader. Worked out well for Pete Rose.

Does anyone remember the Joe Nuxhall gaffe in the early 70s in which he was pre-recording "Turfside", blew it, cussed, and went on to take two.. then sent the tape to the station and it aired on the network?

I remember it like this: "Hello this is Joe Nuxhall with Turfside, and tonight we're talking with YOU ****SUCKER!......... Joe Nuxall with Turfside, take two....Hi this is Joe Nuxhall with Turfside, and tonight we're talking with.....

It was 1973 probably. Maybe 74. The Reds network was huge. They sent out a letter to the affiliates apologizing for it.

But it was priceless!

Wow. Thanks for the confirmation, guys. Wonder if WLW or the Reds have done anything to reprimand Marty...

Marty is employed by the Reds so I would imagine any kind of reprimand would come from them. Judging by their current state of affairs on the field, I think they are probably too busy right now trying to figure out why this teams stinks to worry about Marty.

Unfortunately, the exchange has been edited out of the archived broadcast of the game at MLB Gameday Audio. You hear Brantley contradict the grumpy old man -- I mean the venerable veteran broadcaster, then boom, it's on to the next pitch.

Anyone else remember when he practically got into a fistfight with the general manager of the Expos after saying on the air that Pedro Martinez was gonna kill somebody if he kept throwing at batters?

Yeah...I hear ya.

Got that, but doesn't WLW get in trouble if someone complains to the FCC about bad words going out on the air?

I heard it too. But I was in the car and it was difficult to understand. You could tell it was Marty being uppity pissed with someone though.

Maybe Marty is pissed off because Thom has been shown to be clueless quite a few times by his partners in the booth.

I've not been a fan of Marty for years. He's been there too long, seen too much. He reminds me of myself when I had been in a job so long it had become boring and it was time to move on to something different.

Do you think any other team would employ Marty? ($$ not being a factor)
