Did AT 40 air this weekend

Did AT 40 with Ryan Seacrest air in your market this weekend? I noticed that AT 40 didn't come on today on WZYP at 6AM and again at 7PM. I doubt the station would suddenly drop AT 40, especially a show as popular as that.

from what i've been told cumulus company wide dropped AT40. i don't think any cumulus stations run the show any longer.

So I guess this would include Y102 Montgomery and WAOA Melbourne? I emailed WZYP and it turns out AT 40 will no longer air on WZYP and will be replaced by some show hosted by the station's on air talent. I wonder what Ryan Seacrest did to make them mad? That's the reverse of Rick Dees being dropped from Clear Channel stations.

Cumulus probably just wants to emphasize local talent.

LOL

Seacrest/Premiere have a deal in place that automatically pulls AT40 and places it on a station running his midday/afternoon show. Jan probably got pissed and pulled it from all their stations as a reaction.

I guess we will know if AT 40 moves from WAOA to Clear Channel WBVD Melbourne since WBVD as On-Air middays. However, I thought that if an AT 40 station refused to air On-Air, a different station in the market could.

They first approached all AT40 affiliates asking them to pick up the mid-day/afternoon show. If the AT40 affiliate said "no" then Premiere was going to then go forward with finding someone else in that market to pick up the show (more than likely the direct competition). If the competition picked up the mid-day/afternoon show then the at40 affiliate automatically loses the rights to at40 and the on air affiliate would get the countdown.

does that answer your question jsu5381m?

Huh. That's what Nassau did.

This explains the situation in Melbourne, FL with WAOA vs WBVD. However, I don't see why WZYP would suddenly drop AT 40. Yes they are a Cumulus station. However, there are no other stations in Huntsville that On Air could fit because there are no other top 40 or hot ac stations in Huntsville. The clear channel stations in Huntsville is made up of a country, classic rock, oldies and news station.

What lowpower said is 100% correct...it's the new form of "branding" in Premiere's eyes along with the age-old standard of strong-arming someone into something they don't want. It prolly means in the markets that don't have another Top 40, they'll try to give it to the Hot AC station...only if they'll take "On-Air" as well.

What's even funnier is in the markets where the non-CC station has AT40, doesn't want "On-Air"...but then the CC station doesn't want either as well. Then Premiere has nothing in that market after they pull AT40.

Premiere wouldn't pull AT40 from a station unless the new station was running On-Air. They wouldn't leave themselves with no station, for no reason.

And yes...Premiere has the prerogative to be able to pull the show and put it on another station, whether viewed as punishment or not. They work an "out" into the contract just like the station does. Funny...if the station cancelled AT40 on their own, unrelated to this topic, no one would feel sorry for Premiere.

You are right. It makes no sense what Cummulus did. I mean, I can't think of any other place to put On Air on in Sioux Falls, Rokford, Huntsville or Montgomery.

As I speculated before, what wouldn't surprise me, is if the loss of AT40 in one market, led to a knee-jerk reaction by Cumulus as a whole to pull the program from ALL their markets. Rumor has it that Jan pulled John Mayer's "Say" from all their CHRs because Star/Atlanta got the exclusive on the Atlanta show. He was pissed, so he dropped the record (which was the catalyst for the downturn of the record in as a whole). Not the first time that these "rumors" have existed, which is why I laugh when other companies get the rap for being "cookie cutter."

I have no proof, and haven't even heard a rumor that this might be what happened. I'm only speculating for the sake of the discussion. But, it wouldn't surprise me.

Regarding AT40 I don't normally stick up for the corporate companies but is AT40 that good that by losing it they would hurt themselves? I don't think so. All the nationally syndicated countdowns are poorly produced and cookie cutter at best. Hollywood, Ryan, Rick (They all sound scripted to the point where it's obvious).

Regarding "Say" I just did a quick search on Mediabase to see what Cumulus CHR's have year to date spins on it and the only Cumulus Station that seemed to play it was KQXY (602 year to date) and WZYP (36 year to date). The other stations WHHY Montgomery, AL; WHOT Youngstown, OH; KMCK Fayetteville, AR; WAOA Melbourne only detected countdown spins from the song. Both WZYP and KQXY are extremely Hot A/C so I guess that's why they played it.

Roger...

Very wrong you are! They have been pulling the show from stations if they don't take "On-Air"! I have 5 PD friends across the country where it's happening!

To be honest...the show isn't good anymore...and if I was a PD that has the show...I'd drop it and do a local countdown!

So...just so we're clear...you're saying that just because they turn down On-Air, Premiere is pulling AT40, WITHOUT another station to put it on? In other words, they're simply cancelling the contract (and money generated from having an affiliate in that market), not replacing it with another station? Is that what you're saying?

Well that is stupid. That means then Clear Channel Stations like Z100 NYC and Q102 Philly will have AT 40 pulled because they are not airing On Air. I wonder if this means Rick Dees can fight his way back onto Clear Channel stations? If this is true, then most of the 400 AT 40 stations are going bye bye.
