Did Entercom go shopping at The Phoenix on Black Friday?

from oct 08 into late july 09, ETM stock was in the tank to the point of being given a de-listing letter. The Fields family was buying stock just to keep the price up.

So with the company stock dropping from 31 bucks a share in Nov 05 to 70 cents in 09, along with nobody in their right minds loaning money on radio properties, there was no way they were in a position to make an offer on a CB radio, forget a station that was already upside down in a big way compared to it's previous sale.

Remember this wasn't too far removed from the time when the Bain/Lee purchase of CC was delayed due to the falling values of radio stations. IIRC that deal almost fell through.

FNX 's antenna is atop One Finacial Place in downtown Boston. It is an directional antenna. Full power north but -20 Db south to protect 101.5 FM in Providence.

And 101.9 in Falmouth-it is short spaced to that one as well.

If Entercom boght the other Phoenix ststions, they'd probably put WAAF on them.

Dana how did Mindich pull that off? AFAIK there was no pressing need to get off the Medford tower up behind Malden Hospital, especially with the translator covering downtown.

The Medford tower wasn't a bad spot for in-car listening but building penetration downtown...especially in college dorms...was pretty lousy for WFNX on 101.7. The 101.3 xlator did nothing to help that, 7 watts at that height (top of the Hancock Tower) made for remarkable coverage (I picked it up cleanly out at Wellesley College in my car) but that's too low an ERP to penetrate buildings.

The trick is that if you want real downtown coverage your stick MUST be located downtown to have enough oomph to get through all the blanketing interference caused by the stations on the Prudential Tower.

Herald mentions the WEEI/WFNX rumor and various denials but also says that Jeff Lawrence of the Weekly Dig "stands by it" (as far as I know, not the same Jeff Lawrence DJ who's been on WCGY, WODS, various NH stations)

http://bostonherald.com/jobfind/new...i_said_to_eye_fm_move/srvc=home&position=also

One of the comments said their recep of WEEI is so bad they had to resort to hearing Celts-Cavs
on Cavs flagship WTAM 1100 instead (home of Mike Trivisonno, "hello, you're in the air...")

Universal Hub also mentions the rumor and at one point says it isn't true but someone calling himself "Jeff Lawrence" posts "it's a totally true rumor". For now we can assume it is BS, but if it does come true there will be egg on some faces :)

(...remember Ch 7 sportscaster Zip Rzeppa--yes, that's his name and I think he's in St Louis now--
who made a prediction that didn't come true and said, "Boy do I have egg on my face now"--
and cracked an egg on his face right on the air?) :)

Interestingly enough, if WFNX hadn't been able to make OFC work (and it was a close thing...that extra antenna of theirs is really shoehorned in on that tower up there) then one place that would've been better from a "closer to downtown" perspective is, believe it or not, WZBC's tower on Chestnut Hill. They would've had to diplex the antenna, but that would've been totally do-able. And there's not a LOT of room left in the transmitter closet, but there's enough for one more Class A station.

Of course, WZBC's tower is so comparatively low to the ground that the old Medford tower was still probably a better bet for balancing building penetration vs. in-car listening. But it would've been amusing if the two biggest remaining rock stations in town shared the same tower.

But WZBC's HAAT is only 220'. IOW, WFNX running 6 kW (which probably would still have required a DA to protect Providence) would have been able to radiate the equivalent of only ~2.7 kW @ the Class A full-power maximum HAAT of 328'. That would have been a lot more uncompetitive than WFNX's present signal. OTOH, where I live (Arlington Heights) WZBC, which runs a lot less than 2.7 kW, has a fine signal. I wish it wasn't so good, because if it were not, I could hear WICN (which currently comes in only when WZBC is off the air).

im one of only few ppl on this board to have an hd radio and i find it funny since the rumors started that mike fm has had their hd off!! have they doing work to the antenna to maybe change the sound for talk instead of music??? and what happens to the hd3 does it goto mike fm since some ppl might not be able to get it especially down my way se mass. maybe its nothing!!!!

All this is quite true-just ask the few Needham stations still located there (94.5 98.5, 102.5). They still get creamed by the Pru. It didn't help that 'FNX was only 1 mHz away from WZLX either. The Medford site wasn't short spaced to Falmouth (it fit by about 3/4 of a kilometer), so 'FNX could operate non-directionally there. Providence wasn't a problem either as it is also directional away from the north. Now, 'FNX is limited to a couple hundred watts toward the South Shore-they have a worse signal there that they used to have from Medford, even though they are physically closer. Originally 'FNX had a CP to run 3 kW ERP from about halfway up the Medford tower-I was the one that insisted on the tower top. I did so for several reasons. First, Frank DiRico was just beginning to develop the tower-and having the antenna part way up would have meant going off the air a LOT when climbers were on the tower. Second, we did a shadowing study and found that downtown Boston multipath would have been MUCH worse from lower down the tower. Finally, the power hit was less than 3 db (1650 watts vs 3000 watts), and the extra 140 feet also pushed the 1 mv contour out a few extra miles to the west (you used to be able to listen to 'FNX clearly within pretty much the entire 495 corridor (except due south toward 101.5); now it barely covers the 128 corridor). Finally, there was a reason the antenna was positioned on the pole the way it was-it blew about 4 db more power in the vertical plane towards downtown Boston then a 'real' non-directional antenna. It would have been even more, but the Phoenix botched the leasing process with Harvard and we wound up having to use a 3 inch mounting pole instead of a 5 inch one. The irony was that the complimentary null went right over Lynn, the city of license.

Felger promising a big ratings announcement for tomorrow....probably in tonights AM Herald.

Toucher & Rich are #1 in the November ratings book.

A bit misleading unless you specify the demo.

Men 42-45 with incomes of 150K or more in the 02134 zip code.

You can finagle Arbitron enough to get good numbers ;)

LOL. I do like the show though and I'm sure they ARE doing well.
