Riding with the rodeo, its the only life I'll ever know... They used to tell me,
Ride em cowboy, don't let em throw you down, you can't make no money if you hit the ground.-Paul Davis

As heard on WJDX circ. 1975. Big hit, nobody plays it anymore. Anyone remember that ditty?

How bout this old JDX gem: I don't know why shes leaving or where she's gonna go, I guess she's got her reasons but I just don't want to know, but for 24 years I've been living next door to Alice.-Smokie (another good old lost 45)

(It was a current the week I started working at 62JDX. Burt and Kurt were doing mornings, Jim Chick middays, Ray Zoller afternoons, Bill Crews and Dave Perkins nights, Dave Blair overnights. I worked a couple of weekend shifts along with "Radio Phil" Williams.)

Trivia on that song... a guy who toured with Mac Davis told me they had a hard time on tour matching the signature drum sound from the Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me record. Turns out, when they recorded the song, they had used a big "Rubbermaid" garbage can.

Man... what a line-up! Don't forget the newscasts with Howard Lett! Old 62JDX was on top of the game back then.

Oh yeah, I remember Burt and Kurt, Jim Chick Bill Crews and Dave Perkins. Those were great times to listen to the radio. It just hasn't been the same since the mighty JDX died. A friend back in college had an LP with a bunch of Burt and Kurt bits on it. Including the memorable bit that had Red Wood trying to jump over the Pearl river in a bulldozer. (a reference to Gov. Cliff Finch who was supposed to be the working mans friend, and Evil Kenevils ill fated snake river canyon jump) I remember the whole cast of charactors were at the "live" broadcast from the Byram swinging bridge where it took place. Jay-ree Clower, the senator, Rev. Billy, Mohammad Wah-lee, Gomer Pyle, etc. The station was so popular they named the Orangatangs at the zoo, Red and Fern Wood after the shows charactors, although I'm not sure the orangatangs still living or not, haven't been to the zoo in years. I wish I had taped that record when I heard it, I've never seen another one like it. Does anyone remember seeing that LP? I'd love to hear some of that JDX stuff again.

It sure was, Brings a tear to your eye thinking about how radio went in the toilet.

*Drumroll* "The Great Entertainer, WJDX Jackson", *beep*, "NBC News... I'm Camron Swazee"

I don't know if yall have a dope problem in Atlanter, But in Jackson Mississippi they's actually mara-wanner being sold on the streets, They out in the streets selling it. The Police cannot contain all the mara-wanner in Jackson, and thats the truth.

And if you've ever seen somebody high on mara-wanner, you can tell, the cuticles are dialated. We learned that at the narcotics trainin convention in Tupelo, Mississipi. The have that ev'ry six months and we went up thar to see it and they had a boy that tried that mara-wanner pill. His Eyes rolled back upon his head, he was shaking. He bout kicked over, he was hollering that trip out as loud as he could, He was actually what they call "freaking out"

-as heard on WZZQ around 1976-77.
Remember that one? album is out of print but I have a copy I found at a thrift store. Me and my pothead friend used to fall out laughing everytime it came on when we were kids. The last time I heard it on the radio, David Adcock had found a copy and played it on Arrow 94. I also heard a scratched up copy on rock 104 in Hattisburg. They should put that back out on CD.

Before I got a job there,I was one of those star-struck little town dj's that would vist the mecca of radio in Jackson. I remember Johnny Summer giving me a tour of the ZZQ studio, watched Ray Zoller(however he spelled it)doing his thing on JDX,and thinking "now, this is heaven!". I've got the Kurt Kilpatrick album somewhere, stored with my ZZQ "Mother Rock" t-shirt. Hey, the brownies in the kitchen with the secret ingredient were good, too!
