I used to be a fan of Fish on Rocket 95.1. He used to be creative but now his show has went to a level that I am shocked advertisers and listeners haven't asked for him to be fired???

This week he gave away rabbits for easter? Not furry animals but Adult toys. That doesn't really bother me, but when he has a woman come in the studio and use the adult toy live on the air until she climaxed???

This is ridiculous! He used to be quite funny! But now he has had over the top racial content, constant sexual content, and just very questionable content for local radio.

You would think the police would be involved in this situation? Can you actually have a woman use an adult toy on herself at a work place?

I have listened to and enjoyed the Rocket since it's start in 2000. I hope the management of the Rocket is smart enough to see that this is not good for the Rocket or for local radio!
 
Sounds like he's trying to become a Stern-wannabe. I don't think there's a specific law being broken by having a women come in and (real or not) climax on the air, but it does sound like it's a bit outside the community standards of the area.

Of course I've always wanted people to be a little edgier on the radio, but that seems to be the exception for that part of Alabama.

Are you sure it wasn't just a stupid April Fools prank?
 
Well, that broadcast would never happen on a station that I owned or programmed, but that is just MY taste, my take on what is decency.

But in response to your outrage, I am guessing you never saw the movie: "When Sally met Harry".

As we walked out of the theater in 1989 giggling but otherwise silent, I finally turned to my wife and said: "Did we just watch a movie about one of our children?"
 
April Fool's or not! Still uncalled for. Radio and TV are supposed to have a safe harbor. 6am-10 am is not the time for the content that I hve heard on his show.
 
I'm not surprised if it did happen.

I tried to give the Fish's show a chance when The Rocket quit carrying the Rick and Bubba show. But it was no "Morning X", so I quit listening to his show completely last year.
 
I think a lot of people stopped listening for the same reason. When he first started everyone listened because it was new, edgy and different. He had HUGE ratings in the beginning but they have since flattened. I don't listen anymore either so I didn't hear the event but I'm not surprised that it happened. You're right Zach, "Stern-wannabe" would be a good way of putting it. I've had that thought before as well. I agree that I don't think there are any laws being broken that you could involve police but you certainly can (and probably should) involve the FCC.
 
what a bonehead thing to do on the air if it is true- but involving the fcc? are you crazy? those unelected people have too much power as it is-- dont listen if you dont like it-- but dont let some suits in dc tell you what is decent or obscene--

screw the fcc--
 
Thanks John! Perfectly said! That is why you have so many choices now to listen to! When I was on the ROCK station in Panama City Beach, FL I would pull stunts. We would have listeners believing we had NAKED women, me having a "Shot Gun" wedding, sex with midgets & sexy step mothers and some guy named "DICK" threatening to have us shut down. None of it was really happening! It is called "THEATRE OF THE MIND". If we could entertain doing HARMLESS pranks, then so be it. As long as numbers are solid, obviously somebody is listening to those stunts! Through every stunt we pulled as long as it was "ENTERTAINING & COMPELLING", do it! That is one thing wrong with radio now. Everyone is afraid of some "System Malfunction" so some idiot can run to the MOMMIE F.C.C. which I agree, half of those "White Colored Startched Shirts" wouldn't know "Good Radio" if it slapped them in the head! If you don't like it, don't listen to it! That is simple enough! AMEN!

BTW, John, the Greyhound Bus Terminal here in Las Cruces, NM is a convenience store so if you ever wind up going to it instead of the one in Montgomery, I can order REAL FOOD instead of the vending machines in the Montgomery Terminal. One difference, you can't tell the BAG LADIES from the PORTA JOHNS!

I have now replied to this thread 3 times only to delete my comments each round. Discretion is the better part of valour. Now, I must weigh in.

Jerome is a seasoned professional whom I have had the extreme pleasure to work and even share on office with; let me assure you he knows exactly what he's doing every step of the way. Allow me to elaborate.

Alabama is a wonderful place and I thank God He put me there for a little while. The true friendships I forged there last to this day and I wouldn't trade my friends or my time there for any treasure on Earth. That said, the prude and self-righteous attitide that prevails in some circles, incuding that of the self-proclaimed "wild dj" are in need of a reality check.

Radio is theater. It always has been when done properly - be that as a local talk host tilting the windmills of local hypocracy or a midday guy trying to be original in executing his "Jet Away To The Caribbean Grocery Slip Contest". The common denominator is we are all doing everything within our power to engage the potential audience. You think a woman actually ejaculated on Fish's show? I'd bet dollars to donuts he trolled you. Ha. More importantly, he trolled his listeners. Who are they? 18-54 males. Wonder how that'll turn out in the Nielsens. I'll give you three guesses!

Yeah, John Garrett, Fish can be a bonehead. I know. He did his level best to build up a station in Dallas mother freakin' Texas that has suffered under a yoke of failure for years. How many of you have packed stones like that? His placement in Huntsville has put him in the unique position of straddling that thin line of being completely engaging to his target audience and having to expalin to his poor beleagured PD that he just had to do something that caused all the stupid calls of "how do I explain that to my children?"

It's a rock station for cryin' out loud. It ROCKS. Don't listen if you are offended by the rock and roll lifestyle. It's just that simple, wilddj. Perhaps you should change the moniker to tamedj. That's just my opinion...I could be wrong.
 
i dont mind that he did it-- but he has to live with any consequences that may arise-- if it sounded like a chick usung a vibrator-- it doesnt matter if it was real or memorex--

i wouldnt want to have to deal with the flack that would come with it-- and advertiser reaction-

Part of our society is still strongly attached to 18th Century Victorian/Puritanical values. I grew up in a society where heck and darn could get you a good lecture by your mother or your Sunday School teacher. Alabama does have a contingent of people who are still oriented in that direction. After all, what state is the home of Judge Moore and his Ten Commandments movement.

Obviously Alabama is also home to a number of people who have a daily vocabulary that, as we used to say, "would make a sailor blush."

As a society we are trying to figure out how these two extremes can (do I dare use the word?) cohabitate. And broadcasters have to regularly think about who they are going to please, and who they are going to irritate.

You post, bassassassin, illustrates this bifurcation. There is a part of you that wants to honor the modesty side of our civilization which is evidenced by your confession that you almost posted three (different?) messages before you crafted one that did not violate your own sense of communication values. But then you proceed to admonish us that "this is the day of rock and roll" which means you expect ALL radio listeners to graciously receive and accept rock and roll language and rock and roll concepts.

This struggle can be compared to the "smoking in public places" battle. Smoker are quite sure it is their right to fire up a cigarette as they finish their meal in a restaurant and order one more beer. Those who are allergic to smoke and those who just find smoke-smell unpleasant are equally sure it is their right to be free of the presence of tobacco smoke odors. Is one side right and the other wrong?

My guess is this event will result in a few ruffled tail-feathers and life will move on. But if I owned a radio station in Alabama, the last thing I want is to get the Baptists and their Evangelical friends all hot and bothered about my programming.

And if you want to see really colorful fireworks, wait til the Rev. Donald J. Wildmon over in Mississippi gets on the case. I think he has the FCC on his FAX-machine speed-dial. We could sell tickets to that event!
 
bassassassin? So Rock-N-Roll is having a girl fake or use an adult aid on the radio? I thought Rock N Roll was great musc? And if he was so good in Dallas why would he come to Huntsville? No slam on Alabama, but looks like a step way backwards.

It is people like Fish that have hurt radio! Maybe since I think he is doing trash radio, I should call the advertisers myself. I know there is not a client in the Tennessee Valley that would ever want to be apart of that.

It's just not good for local radio
 
John G; never truer words written on these boards...it's all about the benjamins, and if I'm wrong in the thought that Fish's stunt will draw his target demo, I'll stand corrected, but I think I'm right. The numbers gained in ratings will long outlast the flack drawn over a radio bit.

Cowboy; you make salient and accurate comments. I've had to deal with the snake-handler faction over stuff on the radio and they're not a fun crowd to placate. They lose steam quickly in my experience, though, and again...those numbers endure. I'm a smoker BTW, and long ago acquiesced to the fairness of me taking my nasty and dangerous habit out the front door to avoid inflicting it on those with an aversion to my habit. Those people in the restaurant have no choice - radio listeners do. It's the old mantra of "if you don't like it, vote against it...change the channel".

wild; I said rock and roll lifestyle. Yes, rock and roll is great music. It's made me a living on many occasions as it does currently. But the lifestyle that accompanies it is inclusive of many things puritanical people take offense to. The fact that you were offended leads me to think you might want to avoid that lifestyle. DON'T LISTEN! Don't call the cops, the FCC, the advertisers...JUST DON'T LISTEN! It's simple. Fish left Dallas after failing to make the station a success - something many tried and weren't able to do. I just admire the fact that he tried. It takes a bold person to try and tackle a tough circumstance like that and he did. Would you?

The "just don't listen" defense is the dumbest statement that a Radio person can make. Lets just alienate some more listeners, why don't we! You don't like us don't listen! As a matter of fact, tell everyone you know "if you don't like it don't listen"! More than likely if you tell 10 people, 6 or more WON"T listen. Why give them more fodder?

If a station ops man or director doesn't have the balls to tell an on air personality that he is doing something wrong or that the personality might be doing something is jeopardizing the listening audience, then something needs to be done!

Case in point: I have made numerous mistakes and gaffes in the 7 years I have been on the air. If I make a mistake, I know that Brett will tell me. He does it in a respectful way, and makes me aware of what I am doing. And I appreciate that. It's not easy sometimes to accept the criticism, but I know that he is my superior, and he is in that position because he knows more about this job than I do. If I was in the same boat, I would do the same thing. If someone on your station is doing something that is reducing the listening audience, and advertisers, that means revenue is not coming in. That means we are not going to get paid. I hate not getting paid.

Yes, he can do it. But everything in life comes with consequences. Just ask the Dixie Chicks.
And I'm not bashing the Chicks. I miss them on the radio. But they did something, believed in it and
look where it got them.

My main thought on this is it's just easy radio. Stunts and risque bits are easy. It's much
more challenging to engage the demo in a clean, intelligent way. I'm showing my colors now
I guess, but I feel the same way about comics. The ones who makes me laugh til I pee with
clean humor get way more respect from me than the vulgar ones. Don't get me wrong, I like
both. But I have just always given the clean comics more credit. It's a lot harder to do it that way.

Now, back to figuring out how I can work a fart joke in on tomorrows show. Farts is funny. I don't care
who you are.

Your assumption may be true for a lot of people, maybe even more than half the people.

For those of us who grew up in families and churches and communities where the word was not allowed, was not accepted in public conversation, unless you take rebellious turn and decide to demonstrate to everyone you can do anything you want to, your discomfort with such words sticks with you the rest of your life like the comic version of an animated conscience-angel sitting on your shoulder, whispering in your ear from time to time.

I have a few colorful words that punctuate my vocabulary from time to time and I don't think my friends would tell you that I am some kind of obnoxious prude. But your word-of-choice is not one of them. The question a radio programmer in Alabama (and a lot of other places) has to ask is: Does the GRC mentality represent 1%, 3%, 7%, 28% or 41% of the people in my listening area that I could attract as a listener. Do I gain more listeners than I lose if I choose to use junior-high bathroom humor?
