Did You Notice? WTVN

I noticed for the first time (it may have been already happening, I just hadn't noticed) there was an interactive exchange between Joel Riley and Ken Stevens with Ken guy not only promoting stories for the 8 o'clock news but playing sound bites to support them and interaction with Joel. Sounds like some tweaking on the morning show presentation.

I haven't heard this, but I did notice they've changed their news, traffic and weather music while I was driving around last night. Can't remember if the VO guy is the same.

Geesh! I must not be only one who finds Joel Riley unlistenable! Find another host!

Xtra are you in columbus ? just curious
Yes.

I was kind of hoping for someone who at least had Corby's or Steve Cannon's level of talent. I know usually neither of those guys have/had the most insightful things to say, and Cannon used to say things that were downright stupid, but as show men they both sounded great on the radio. Joel has neither quality.

Love to break the news. I really don't know why they're holding it from public release, but "the search" (such as it was) is over.
Joel Riley was offered and accepted the permanent morning host position. I got it on very good authority.
So, its "Riley in the morning", or "Joel over easy" of whatever else they can come up with. I think one of the immediate and sustaining problems they will have is the fact that although Joel has been spewing opinions on their air for a number of years, he really has a very low Q in the market. Whatever he's been talking about for all these year, very few folks has paid much attention. That's really key...when he talks...who really listens?
And the search? Lip service.

Please see previous post: Depressing. The guy simply has nothing interesting or insightful to say. Whenever he babbles something, his observations leave me scratching my head saying, "So?" Whenever he talks about something like coon hunting, I ask myself, "Who outside of Mount Vernon cares?" Bad move.

Question. What had Bob talked about that has resonated with the public the past few years? When I hear people talk about Bob, it's always things from the past. Sammy, Mail, Hiney Winery, Michigan Oldies Dance. Nothing recent.

I had a feeling it was Joel Riley who was offered the permanent gig. It's been over two months since Bob Conner announced his retirement and things have been been very quiet over at CC Columbus lately.

How much will WTVN ratings drop now that Joel Riley is the new permanent host? Even Joel Riley doesn't expect to have any where near the following
BC had in the ratings. He admitted that on the air.

All this makes me wonder if Joel Riley was CC Columbus's choice for the permanent morning host all along. I think this may help WVKO-AM out a little.
I'll listen to Bill press over Joel any day.

Artie: I believe Joel was being self deprecating when he said that. And you don't diss an institution to his face on the air by saying you're going to build where Bob left off. For that moment, Bob was the Great Swami.

I'm not a Joel fan and have been a BC fan for 40+ years. I don't see a big tail off in Joel's ratings vs Bob's.

Again, the morning show had become plug and play.

There is no real NT competition in the market. Sure there's NPR, but it's at a different level than commercial NT. So where are people listening for something heavy on news and information going to go? WOSU or WCBE? Maybe the Morning Zoo or Wags and Elliot? I mean think for a minute. Do WTVN listeners want long form news ala WOSU or WCBE or do they want a morning show that laughs and giggles it way through the morning? Don't think so.

Many TVN listeners don't change the dial that often. The station is a heritage station and the listeners are heritage listeners. That's good and bad.

Joel is not an unknown commodity. While he may never be the next great broadcaster, the station other than probably tending mostly to upper demos runs pretty much to most listeners like a well oiled machine. The station only requires tweaking and tuning up, not a major overhaul. In other words, it didn't need a major talent to jolt the audience. It needs a caretaker that will groom it. At least at this point, Joel is doing that.

Clint Eastwood probably has only about two pages of dialogue in the Dirty Harry movies or in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. His acting consists of his facial expressions, his mannerisms and his attitude. In other words, he almost facilitates the story. Connors did the same thing, especially with Open Phones. He would get out of the way and let the caller do the talking.

Joel doesn't have this talent. Joel gets in the way. I heard some of this banter with Ken Stevens this morning, didn't sound so hot, either.

This might be the time to start up the rumored "Dispatch Radio"?

Quite honestly, I don't know why WBNS AM doesn't air their TV morning newscast. They may have to tweak it since there are no pictures, but that wouldn't be hard to do. Someone in Sacramento does that and it seems to do pretty well.

Oh, and I wouldn't limit it to mornings. Do pm drive too.

You could resurrect the old Breakfast News Service in the morning and have I Missed It News on the drive home. (Remember, if it's news to you.......it's news to us!)

With so many elements like traffic every 10 minutes and weather and sports and news taking up 12 minutes plus per hour, what does Joel really need to do but hold serve ask a few questions and get out of the way?

I think the host of that program needs to reflect his city, have a wide scope of relationships and be a positive voice for Columbus. I think the host of that program needs to be objective regarding news, well-read, and not personally polarizing. I think he has to not sound like he just fell off the corn truck from Mt. Vernon or just came from a Big Bass Brothers luncheon.

Joel Riley is Bob Conners replacement and also Chuck Douglas said he will permanently do Saturday Open phones as of today.
This is a promotions according to some of the callers to the show this morning.
I read somewhere where Joel needs a brake as he has to get up a 3:00 AM ever morning so it is giving up the
Saturday morning show.

I think Chuck will do an excellent job with the Saturday Open Phones show. Chuck has occasionally posted here.

I did hear a caller on the show this morning say he was upset with CC Columbus management for naming Joel Riley as
BS's replacement. He was a big fan of BC for decades but may stop listening to WTVN because he can't stand listener
to Joel Riley in the morning. He then said he turns to the news channels in the morning. He then want to say that the ratings on
WTVN radio will fall because of Joel on WTVN in the mornings. I agree with this caller.

A few weeks ago, a caller said he almost cried when BC announced his retirement. It appears Joey dose not fell the void left
when Bob Conners retired, at least for some of the listeners to the morning show on WTVN radio.
