Didn't the RAT at one point be owned by.....

Nassau?

For some reason, I think they were, at one point owned by Nassau, albeit for a brief period of time, possibly a spin-off? Who was the owner when they signed on (In what, was that 95?)

When they were the format prior to Active/Heritage Rock (what they are now is up for debate, I guess), I'm pretty sure they were owned by Nassau. If I'm not mistaken, in late '95 they switched over to Rock as WRAT. I believe Jersey Shore Communications (also former owner of WJRZ) operated them and decided on the new format. Greater Media took over about maybe a year or two ago, and it seems like the sound has become real streamlined, a little bit like an edgier version of sister station WMMR in Philly. I like WRAT and I'm quite happy to see that they've managed to keep most of the same crew together since they signed on, but they really need to increase the amount of currents they play to keep from getting stale. I'm not going to knock what they play, they just need to play a deeper variety of music. I also have to give a thumbs up to their "Three Play" weekends - it's a good feature, and I wish other stations would go with unique weekend programming instead of sticking to the same old regular playlist.

WADB was purchased by NJ Broadcast Partners, owners of WDHA & WMTR, in September '96 and changed the format to rock and the calls to WRAT. All three stations, along with WWTR and WJRZ, were sold to Greater Media in 2001.

Nassau never owned WRAT. The station was founded in 1968 by Adamant and Dorothy Brown (Pleasant Broadcasters) as WADB. The Browns sold WADB to Burke Ross (owner of WDHA and WMTR) in 1996. Ross's company flipped WADB to its present rock format and changed the call letters to WRAT. Ross later sold all of his New Jersey properties to Greater Media, which continues to own The Rat.
