Difference between Hip Hop and Rap

I started to temporarily leave Dance for Urban-Hip Hop after the 90s Euro Dance sound faded from rhythmics like B-96 Chicago, and Power 96 Miami,, I still liked house, but I didnt like Trance for the longest time. I fled the Dance/Rhythmics and CHRs due to an overkill of Boy Bands, and Girl Bands,,, Brittney, Backstreet, N;Sync, Spice girls, Christina ETC... so i fled to the Urban and the Modern Rock stations, but no POP music, and there was no true Dance aside from POP Dance Remixes which I still avoid.. But when Modern Rock became a haven for EMO Teenage bands and played out 90s grunge, and the Urban stations where playing crap like Laffy Taffy I started giving dance a chance again... Now if im in Atlanta, no doubt im listening to Hot 107.9 over The Beat,,, but if in Miami or Chicago im listening to Power 96 or B-96 over the Urbans, which include too much R&B..... If im in Phoenix I could be listening to KZON KKFR or KZZP, or even KVIB,, they are all decent,,,, I dont care for MOVIN in Phoenix though,, their PD is not a nice person when it comes to current Dance or Urban.... I dont like Conservative rhythmics that wont play any POP or Dance cross overs, why not listen to the real deal, but if the Rhythmic gives you some Dance music and mixes, it makes sense to tune in at times..... I would NOT play brittney on a supposed hip Hop station,,, makes me laugh,,,, if you play Brittney,,, and Chart Hip Hop,,, Break nothing new,, have poor or no mixing,, your not a hip hop station... WPYO Orlando needs to flip back to dance, and let JAMZ have the true Urban listeners, and The Beat in Atlanta should be Dance, or a Active hits CHR,, Hotter than Star or Q... No one believes The Beat is Hip Hop.

Oh, by the way, Rap is something you do, Hip Hop is something you live. (Hmmmm... I probably should've just started with that to begin with!)

I probably should've read the first page of this topic before saying that!

But I got this line after hearing it multiple times from our former "hip hop" station, hip hop clothing store / record commercials, and many other places. We had this debate between rap and hip hop many times at the workplace, on other forums, etc.

Notice the changes taking place - You'll hear Heavy D "now that we found love" on classic hip hop stations and probably even CeCe Penniston... or Whitney Houston... or even Shannon and Lisa Lisa as classic R&B, BUT take certain Flo Rida or Danity Kane or Rihanna songs today and they'll gain no acceptance as hip hop or r&b, the same way Heavy D and all of them did when they rapped or sang on house beats. I'm not sure if Ne-yo "closer" will be included as classic r&b in a few years.... But I must say that this transition of when urban house songs started to go from acceptance to non acceptance had to be around the mid to late 90's. "Boom boom boom" by Outhere Brothers and "100% Pure Love" by Crystal Waters probably would've been included if it were released during the Heavy D, Whitney Houston, Shannon, and CeCe Penniston era. Today, no. But notice how the Crystal Waters song, being released when it was, CAN SOMETIMES be accepted. Hot 107.9 did play it during their 20 minute workout (of back in the day hip hop hits), but never played it closer to the time it was released. The Outhere Brothers were never played, although they COULD have played it and probably gotten away with it during many mixshows, back in 1997 or so. If the house version of "too much booty in the pants" by Sound Master T made it from time to time on Hot 97.5 (or Hot 19, 97 .5), then I'm sure Outhere brothers could've been sneaked in as well. They probably should've started playing it around the same time they started playing "summertime summertime" by Corina, and "Es Verano".... OR Quad City Dj's.

So, with all this being said, this only leaves me to wonder; what do people think of Dj Class or Dj Mad? Will it gain the same acceptance in Atlanta as in L.A.? And where do we draw the line when it comes to hip hop and latin hip hop? Will Daddy Yankee be considered in 2018 during the old school/back in the day hip hop mix shows? WIll Nore & Nina Sky? And which Nina Sky songs? When it comes to urban/hip hop while looking back, will Missy's "lose control" be in it too? And if so, then what about "fergalicious" or "break it off" by Sean Paul ft Rihanna? Where would Pitbull's songs be classified since some of them would probably sound even harder than Heavy D's "now that we found love"? AND.... AND!!! WHICH FLO RIDA songs will be accepted, and why?

I already know "the way I are" by Keri Hilson is accepted, but "Sexy back" by Justin is not, so I wont even ask... but how about Rihanna's "S.O.S."? Will Hot 107.9 play it the same way they sometimes do Crystal Waters during the old school lunch mix? These are just some things I like to think about all Day 'N' Nite... And I know Hot 107.9 has also played Sean Kingston "take you there" and possibly other hits by him, so...... you probably already know where I'm going with this one. He has new music, by the way.....

I also believe "I fell in love" by Rockell could have passed on V-103 or Hot 97.5 back in the mid 90's. That surely would've gained quite a bit of requests and airplay... And I also heard a lot of people who knew about the "perculator", which oddly enough, I was never too familiar with since I didn't hear or pay too much attention to it.

Dwayne & Uncle Teddy... Yolanda (search it on google...)

NuNu - Liddell Townsell (www.myspace.com/lidellt)

Keep Heavy D, Blackbox, or even Ying Yang Twins "drop" or Pitbull or Dj Mad and Dj Class in mind

I was just playing NU NU the other day, What a great Hip house record,, and some Urbans did play those songs you mentioned,,, our WTLC Indidanapolis was all over all those tracks,, they even played Shannon,, and Eddie grant when they were new,, WTLC is Urban AC Now.... hot 96 played tons of dance,,, mostly House and Euro,, but also harder hip hop that our urban wouldnt play,,, you would hear La Bouche into Bone Thugs, into Fun Factory, into Westside connection.... Snoop, into Crystal Waters... Today Hot 96 is all Urban, and phazed out the dance by 98-99, but still would play POP until 2002 when they went Hip Hop and R&B-URBAN, and dropped the white and hispanic Jocks and mixers.... Which is sad to be racisit against any race for any format, just like Wired in Philly fired their Black Jocks..... but still play black music yet dont want an Urban Image..... Race shouldnt matter if you can be a good jock and spin records...

Back in Knoxville TN,, we never had an Urban, and i was too young to remember our short lived rhythmic, but our CHR WOKI I-100 played lots of dance,,, also Hard Rock without batting an eye,,, they also had both black and white jocks, as did CHR WMGI Terre Haute...Appollo was black, and he was great at CHR...
