DIRECTIONAL PATTERNS

WOWO has a good signal even down into the SC coast, as I've heard it probably 10 times here, with Colts football and other programming.

In our area, the most directional AM is WJKB, 950. WJKB has a six tower setup, day and night, about 35 mi NE of Charleston. They are a classic country station for the Charleston area, but they have a better signal on the east side of the market.

You can hear it all the way past Georgetown during the day, but until they upgraded their night signal a couple years ago (which was so bad it couldn't be heard well five or so miles from the transmitter).

WOWO still comes in good in East Tennessee, almost as good as the old 50kw signal. Lately have noticed interference from WSDQ in Dunlap, TN. I've checked online to see if they have been liscensed for night service, but can't find anything showing a CP or new authority. But for about 2 weeks, they are on every night. Have picked them up from over 150 miles, so they must be running their daytime power. Anyone have anyway of verifying this?

I noticed someone was playing Country music on 1190 a few nights ago, and I thought it was CFSL Weyburn, SK, which I have logged before. Turns out it was WSDQ in Dunlap, TN I'm located 40 miles NW of Chicago.

WOWO and WLIB stage a fierce battle in the aether over Western Pennsylvania
(which is a shame, since for many years I was able to listen to Komet Hockey as
loud and clear as if it were on KDKA). According to pattern maps, their signal looks to be
steered due north into Michigan, Wisconsin, Thunder Bay, Ontario, etc.

I wish I could get something on 1190, but 20 miles north of Chicago all I hear is WRTO's IBOC.

Well it's not high school football season... ;)

Maybe they bought a surplus lamptimer from Gumpdusky in Phoenix to do
the critical hours power drop and then the sunset carrier dump. If it's a
Gumpdusky lamptimer, it probably misses both. ;D

Good point! FWIW, I noticed that WSDQ does have post-sunset authority which allows them to stay on in June until 10:00 CDT. It seems doubtful they could be heard over 150 miles away if they're running what they're licensed for after sunset, which is around 40 watts.

I remember hearing about WOWO turning down their power and yet in the N.C. mountains I could still get an excellent signal at night.

Regarding stations that are supposed to turn down the power, maybe they forgot. I know one Myrtle Beach, S.C. station was supposed to turn off entirely, but I heard it at night once,. Really good signal. Now, it's gone for good.

On the other hand, where I go in the mountains (and I go there Wednesday), one station is four or five miles away and soundsvery good at night. The signal can't be that strong.

WOWO sends a pretty good nighttime lobe southeast.

I forgot to mention it was better than at home, which is farther east.

Now they do well to the south but get killed to the east where they used to be strong.
