Dish Network To Replace Weather Channel

http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100520-715627.html

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Satellite television provider DISH Network Corp. (DISH) said Thursday it will replace The Weather Channel on its system at midnight with The Weather Cast, its new, 24-hour weather service.

The switch comes as pay-TV service providers are facing demands from TV networks for higher carriage fees, and The Weather Channel said DISH has refused to pay the market price for its channel.

"Despite negotiations over the past several months, DISH has chosen to be the first distributor to drop The Weather Channel rather than pay the standard industry rates others in the industry have already agreed to pay," said The Weather Channel spokeswoman Shirley Powell in an emailed statement.

DISH said it's dropping the The Weather Channel because the network, which was acquired by an investor group led by NBC Universal and two private equity firms in 2008, has moved away from its traditional role of weather reporting to a mix of movies and other entertainment-focused programming.

"Our customers always tell us that the only thing they want in a weather channel is weather reporting," said Dave Shull, senior vice president of programming with DISH. "We believe The Weather Cast is the best available weather service in America."

DISH said The Weather Cast programs 24-hour weather reporting, interactive forecasting and real-time national storm tracking.

NBC Universal, a part owner of The Weather Channel, is owned by General Electric Co. (GE), which recently agreed to sell a majority stake in the media conglomerate to the nation's largest cable provider, Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), which competes for subscribers with DISH.

"We are disappointed with their decision and hopeful that we can still reach an agreement with DISH Network and bring this highly valued network back to its customers," said The Weather Channel's Powell. "In the meantime, we are urging our viewers to contact Direct TV or their local cable or telco provider to receive The Weather Channel."

We have Dish Network and won't miss the station formerly known as the "weather channel". Watch a few minutes of the new channel, it's okay.

I wonder how long it will be before DirecTV or others drop "The Weather Channel"?, this network has gotten away from what
it was created for back in 1982, Weather, not "Entertainment"!

Good for Dish. :)

Hopefully they'll drop CNN, Fox News & msnbc next and start a network that actually does REAL newscasts around the clock like Headline News did years ago.

This is great news. On Verizon Fios we at least have The Weather Channel's "weatherscan" channel - which provieds radar and forecast graphics 24/7. I never go to the actual Weather Channel anymore for weather.

This new channel sounds promising. It's also providing the service TWC no longer does. If DirecTV and others start dumping the Weather Channel due to the fact it has gotten away from its core mission, NBCU will have to decide whether to totally repurpose the channel or go back to doing weather.

I mainly watch The Weather Channel for the Local on the 8s. I almost never watched them when I had Dish since they don't have local forecasts.

In other words, that channel is kinda like their "VH1 Classic" or "MTV Hits..."

Now, if only Dish can bring back Prevue Guide... ::)

The new channel has graphics very similar to the Weather Channel. If you didn't know you would swear that it was the same channel.

Without even watching a single minute of Dish's new weather channel... I smell an intellectual property lawsuit from NBCU. (Hey, I called the PTC response to CBS' new "____ My Dad Says" show in another thread, I may as well let it ride... ;D )

What a quaint concept that the Weather Channel is expected by many to actually focus on......weather! Gee, I guess that Dish Network is as stuck in the past as I allegedly am. [sarc off/] ::)

Kudos to DISH Network!

As a subscriber I am glad they took the initiative to dump what was once a good network.

This move by Dish may be paying off. Tipster tells the "newsblues" blog that TWC has canceled the movie they planned to run tonight.

They should drop it instead of keep it. I like this new channel, yeah there maybe SOME commecials but compare that to The MOVIE Channel and see who wins.

the "old" gossip is: NBC bought TWC only and solely for the weather.com website.
NBC could not care less about what is broadcast or not broadcast.
further, based on the above posts, y'all really do watch TV weather.
how quaint. yes, i do as well when i'm visiting my mother.

Regardless of claims that the web site was the primary motive for the purchase, any business cares about the bottom line. To that end, decisions that decrease costs and thus bolster that bottom line show that people do, indeed care. They may not care the way our loyal Majestic Oaks Bridge Club cares, but it is, after all, a business.

By the way, indeed TWC has done away with the scheduled movie for tonight, the Howie Long classic, "Firestorm." They're showing weather stories from today, at least they were when I tuned in. And by the way, during the "local on the 8's" forecast, I heard Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Not bad.

NBC overpaid for TWC and that may very well have been due to the benefit of getting weather.com. The problem is NBC has done a lot to hurt the value of their investment by putting Al Roker, News, shows and movies on TWC. Go back to weather 24/7 and they'll be fine. If they want a second channel for all the claptrap they have on there now, go start one from scratch or change one of their other channels to that format.
