Disney selling off WDWD 590

Fortunately, my daughter is now 13 and has moved on from Radio Disney.

That said, WDWD has one of the best AM signals in the metro area. It's not WSB, but it's probably better than the rest.

Who might be interested in this station? My first thought would be Cumulus (they have room for one more station, and they already host WDWD's micro-studio for the Mouse). Move NewsRadio 106.7 to 590, and put a music format on 106.7. CBS could also buy this station and put all-news on it. Lastly, would CC be interested in it as a replacement or supplement for 640? Day signal of 590 isn't as good as 640's, but the night signal is much better.

I can't imagine anybody buying 590 to do all news unless it's all satellite news. All news is too expensive to operate on the local level to just throw on an AM station. Look for a religious or ethnic broadcaster to buy the station. I suppose Bloomberg is a possibility, too. He's been staffing up for a San Francisco station, and nobody could figure out which station. Makes me wonder if he's buying Radio Disney's station there. If he is, logic says he could be buying more than just one.

It could be an upgrade for one of the bigger AMs around, besides You Know Who. 920, 970, 1190, 1160, 1230, 1340.

Maybe so, but then you have to ask, "What happens to the signal abandoned for the upgrade?" It still comes back to what format that could work on the poor sound quality of the AM band is there that Atlanta doesn't currently have, but needs.

Bad Frequency...

Too much interference that low down. I call that end of the band the light dimmer band because they were the first devices to cause interference. Now theres all those switching power supplies used in computers and HD TVs.
I have often thought that the interference problem can be blamed for WGST's lack of success.
NOW, I'd like to see the FCC require manufacturers to CLEAN UP THEIR EQUIPMENT!!! But since much of it is Chinese, the FCC will have difficulty in policing the manufacturers.
Gives new meaning to the term "Chinese Dirty Bomb."

WDWD-AM has a pretty good daytime signal now that it's 12,000 watts. Nighttime is still horrendous.

I wouldn't call it horrendous, although you do get a lot of interference from other stations being on a regional channel. But it beats the daytimers (natch) like 970, 1190, and 1160, and the local channel stations like 1230 and 1340. 920 is only good at night if you are ITP, as is 640.

RFI seems to be less of an issue with 590 to me. 1160 and 640 get interfered with by everything.

OK, the station is technically pretty good as far as the AM band goes. So what programming could you put on it that would attract listeners? Who would buy an AM radio station, even a fairly good one technically, without some sort of plan for what they broadcast on it?
