Disney sells KMIC to DAIJ Media

I think I can sum this transaction up for most of us here in one word.

Damn.

Will this possibly used as the originating station to make 106.1 a 'legal' translator so that it discontinues originating programming?

Doubtful, Steven. Sangeet Radio may very well end up on 1590, with KBRZ & K291CE in simulcast as "K-Breeze". I mean, that'd be the logical solution. The name and calls are already there.

Then comes the issue of what to do with K236AR. A simulcast of KQUE, perhaps? It wouldn't be the first time 95-1 and 980 were in simulcast.

$3.2 million is a lot to spend to feed a $100,000 translator. It's cheaper to find a HD2 to lease out.

I think you may have misunderstood me, John. I don't think 1590 will feed K236AR or K291CE. Instead, I expect Sangeet Radio to leave their current part time schedule on KBRZ 1460 and take over 1590's broadcast schedule full time. This would open up KBRZ to link up with K291CE and air the classic hits "K-Breeze 106-1" across 1460 (which K291CE can pick up OTA from its current site, thus bringing 106-1 into compliance) during the day, with the Fort Bend folks continuing to broadcast during the evenings on KBRZ/K291CE.

I'm right with you, I couldn't imagine shelling out $3.2 mil to feed a translator. Either 1590 becomes the flagship AM of Aleluya Broadcasting or Sangeet buys the time to take over the schedule of 1590.

I thought it might be Daij aquiring this station for some reason. I believe they've been through some changes recently with some of their stations (95.1, for instance).
I don't know how they are connected to Raftt and 106.1, though. My guess is Raftt is renting out the translator to Daij, who might be helping the Fort Bend folks out? Interesting how all these different groups seem to be connected... Anyway I wonder what's in store for 1590.

You've got it backwards, Anonymouse. Daij leases time to Sangeet Radio (1460 KBRZ/95-1 K236AR) Radio Esmirna (1380 KRCM), the Fort Bend folks (1460 KBRZ) and RAFFT (106-1 K291CE). Daij Media, in name, doesn't own K291CE, but it is affiliated with HCCN and Cesar Guel, who is also affiliated with Daij Media. RAFFT is attempting to purchase K291CE from HCCN, but other than that and the ongoing lease of 106-1, there's no affiliation between the two companies that I've ever been made aware.

Whew! That was a mouthful.

Oh BTW, lost in all of this is the fact we've all forgotten about 88-1, which is one of theirs too. I don't know what the plan for KMIC (or whatever it will become) would be. The more I think about it, wasn't Sangeet Radio part time even on KILE (now KGOW)? They may not have the financial ability to purchase 24 hours a day of KMIC's time, which likely would mean that what you hear on 980/880 currently will shift over to 1590, and 980 & 880's time will be leased to other interested parties.

Guess we'll all know here fairly soon. I did some searching around, and this announcement came down 3 days ago, only today being reported by Insight, and posted here by our esteemed stalwart Mediafrog. I'd assume they'll control KMIC's programming by Thanksgiving.

Well, the official paperwork was accepted today (THIS is how you take over a broadcast station legally):

AM STATION APPLICATIONS FOR ASSIGNMENT OF LICENSE ACCEPTED FOR FILING
---------------------------------------------------------------------

TX BAL-20141104ADQ KMIC 20491 RADIO DISNEY GROUP, LLC Voluntary Assignment of License
E 1590 KHZ HOUSTON, TX From: RADIO DISNEY GROUP, LLC
To: DAIJ MEDIA, LLC
Form 314

Why is it - that every single format change in Houston in the past 20 years is to something worse than what was on the frequency before?

I wouldn't go that far, Bruce. KTHT is a vast improvement, as the current Country Legends, over the former Hot 97-1. KHPT is far and away better as The Eagle, than it was burning the same 200 80s songs over and over as The Point. 103-7 KHJK as Air 1, to me anyway, is a significant upgrade in format from the Cumulus days of poorly copycatting the former KLOL, and on the senior band there's KCOH at 1230, that replaced a roulette wheel of formats that Liberman threw on the former KNUZ over the past couple of years prior to the move of KCOH.

Not every flip tickles my fancy either, but not every single one has been worse than what the previous one was. I probably will raise the ire of some posters with this, but I'll go a step further than stan on his comment. I don't necessarily believe this is a waste of $3.2 million for the KMIC signal, only a total waste of a legendary dial position in this market that now will be used to sucker the feeble minded out of their money. What a sad time it is for those of us that fondly remember the glory days of the former KYOK, and those older than me who gave life to KYOK's predecessor KATL.

Such is the way, when it comes to an AM property in this day and age. I sure was pulling for Salem to acquire it. They would have been an excellent steward of the station, regardless of what format would have been laid out for it. Just wasn't meant to be.

A bit of hyperbole / humor on my part. My point - that the joke made badly - is that Houston has lost many formerly great radio stations, starting with KILT AM in 1980. What little we have gained in return will not return Houston radio to its former greatness. I agree that Houston getting an Air-1 is a great development. I don't blame KSBJ for caving in to the praise and worship zombies two decades ago, probably that is all that the Christian labels in Nashville fed them for all that time. At least they now see the problem, and are responding with NGEN. I would rather have seen 103.7 go for NGEN, and still hope that NGEN gets a decent North and Northwest signal. KCOH is an excellent development - African American entertainment for African Americans who have morals and good taste if you ask me. I enjoy it, too. Country - anything - doesn't interest me. And I have noticed that 97.1 has abandoned its excellent HD-2 - or at least doesn't care enough about it to maintain it. The new HD_2 on KODA is an excellent development. But I don't look at HD-2 formats as anything permanent. Broadcasters don't take them seriously (97.1), consumers aren't interested in HD radios and probably don't know how to use the ones they have in cars. Otherwise we would see HD-2's all over Houston ratings. We don't.

What IS Salem anyway? Christian or not? I see them buying stations and converting them to talk. Can't tell much difference between them and secular talk.

Agreed on the NGEN, and with the (hopefully) soon to upgrade KLTR, perhaps there will be a home opening up for KSBJ on the northside. Well....at least the way way northside.

Also couldn't agree more with regards to KCOH. Excellent music selections, thought provoking talk, and a station committed to serving the community and never waning from their mission. Dr. Dunn should be commended for keeping this heritage station on the dial. That took a serious commitment on his part, and folks like me are thankful for it each and every day.

Salem is a Christian based operator, however, they do air some secular programs. In my experience listening to KNTH, I have found it to echo many of my Christian beliefs within the programming offered, however there are certainly times that I have encountered things that raise my eyebrow and think to myself, "Did they really just say that on a conservative talk station?" All in all, as a talk station, I find KNTH to have the least political bend of all the AM talk stations and enjoy much of what I hear coming from 1070.

Can anyone verify if 1590 is on the air? It was this morning, but now I'm at work, inside, and my portable's not picking up KMIC as usual at the high end. First station audible at my check this afternoon (going from right to left on your radio dial) is KSHJ 1430, with an apparent mass on air. I'll have to wait another hour to head down to the parking lot and verify 1590's absence from my truck, if its indeed off.

Edit: checked from the truck, and it is on the air, but with a noticeably weaker signal by IAH. Running the directional array, during the day??

I though it was DA-2.....two different patterns day and night...may have gotten stuck on the night pattern
I know someone on FB who works there....I'll ask

I can't come close to matching the expertise in engineering you have, CW, but just using my God given ears 1590 shoots pretty much every thing it has back towards the Gulf from the Tidwell tower site. There is one lobe towards the north/NW that just so happens to envelop my house, giving me a pretty good signal just west of I-45 at night. Go east of 45, and KMIC starts to fade off rather fast. When I left yesterday, it was just after 4 in the afternoon. As I headed west on the Beltway, it was taking on interference but began to strengthen rather quickly as I approached Hardy. Once I was nearing home, it was coming in as normally as one would expect from 1590 on the northside of the Belt. I gave it a check this morning, while warming the truck, and it sounds like any other day. I'd certainly be interested in hearing from them as to what happened.

As I said earlier, KMIC sounded fine on the drive in, nothing out of the ordinary, so I would assume that it did switch back to day power yesterday morning.

I double checked at the FCC db...KMIC is a DA-N......(U2??? Bono?? ;) )

The designators for AMs are:

ND1-U (omni 24/7) A ND-1 is likely a daytimer only omni...
ND2-U (omni 24/7 with now different power levels...this is used on stations that have renewed in recent years...otherwise, the ND1-U will still show; guess the FCC decided to show those who have different contours now)
DA-N U (Directional at night only)
DA-1 U (Directional 24/7 even with power decrease)
DA-2 U(Directional day and night...different patterns)

Of course if they dont have the U, they are daytimers only OR have PSSA/PSSR or Critical Hours with directional...

WHEW.....

SO they could have switched early to the night pattern (may be getting documentation ready for the sale)...showing the towers phase and amplitude still shows what was originally filed on the last license to cover to prove the array is in compliance.....and if they havent changed to MOM (Method of Moments computation), they may be running a partial proof on the array for the sale

"It's alright, it's alright....allllright. Signal moves in mysterious ways". Had to throw that in, just couldn't resist, lol.

Explanation sounds logical to me, I've actually got it on the portable right now, same location, and there's KMIC with RD as usual today. Doubt it'd be worth it to meander down to Tidwell to see if there is activity at the towers. Any work by the Daij engineers wouldn't commence until after the sale is approved, no?
