DJ 106.7

Anyone have thoughts or opinions on this one? I've listened to it. Other than the commercials in Spanish and the jocks talking Spanglish, I mainly hear pop English-language tunes on the station.

thats good they also play dance... we dont need more spanish stations

106.7 would be neither more nor less; they have had various formats in the Spanish language for many, many years. Actually, the population trend suggests that more Spanish language FM music stations in Miami would be well supported.

Before you post again, could you explain your last two devoid-of-facts posts, please?

Anyone remember when it was WSDO "Studio 107?"

I was in the military in Alaska during that time, but yes it was around 1979. I remember reading in Billboard that it was to be a "true top 40", which I took to mean playing more of that Billboard had in its top 40 of the Hot 100; but from what I understand, it was basically a disco-leaning CHR. Am I right?

I remember WSDO..the format did't last long cause it drove Joe Amaturo crazy...He wasted no time in changing the format and that was followed by a series of call letter changes...WEWZ,WWJF.WJQY are a few I remember...

I recall it being disco-leaning station. Around the same time WMJX 96.3 altered its format to "Disco 96" which didn't last long either. It we really go back in time, remember WGLO?

You are correct sir! As WSDO Studio 107 several adjustments were made in the format to no avail. It was actually Disco with some Smooth Jazz elements. I found the music was at times either really good or really bad.

While probably not Joe Amaturo's favorite music I don't think that was the issue. Joe had been the owner/manager of WPOP Hartford and WIRE Indianapolis when they were both Top 40. Studio 107 just never got the kind of ratings they were looking for even with a big money give away. If memory serves it was half of $107,000 which I believe they did twice. One of the consultants to the station was ex- Y-100 GM Bill Cunningham.

The format change probably came about with the increase in office and studio space that was gained in 1978. WFTL and WGLO moved out of their cramped old studios/offices into a brand new building at the transmitter site in Fort Lauderdale. They could not have done the format change without the move. WGLO was automated with a closet studio for commercial production in the old building.

I worked at WFTL from 1974-1978 and again for a little while in 1979. The move and format change on the FM happened right after I left. While working at WFTL the first time, one of my duties was changing the automation tapes on WGLO.

So much for the history lesson....

As far as DJ 106.7, at this point is the experiment considered a failure as you look at the raw numbers? The sound had gone from a mix to a heavier leaning hispanic rotation. There is a lot of potential for somebody to nail down Power while they are figuring out what to do, but time is of the essence as Bill Tanner has brought in a fixer and won't let Power struggle for long. SBS needs to grab the opportunity while the window is open. I don't think in it's current form, the station is able to survive.
