Do any AC stations still play these tracks?

WDUV-like. They played Kenny G's annoying "Songbird" noise as well...

"Don't Shed a Tear" Paul Carrack, from 1987, on KEXL 97.5 Norfolk, NE during John Tesh. Seems rare as I've never heard it before. Anyone else play Paul Carrack on AC?

Michael McDonald - Sweet Freedom

Recently dropped this one in to the rotation on my online station. Great upbeat, but light track from ~1986.
I like that one too. On a local Rush Limbaugh station some years back, the automation equipment went bad during a news break. I don't even remember whose news they have between the first and second hour and the second and third hour (and before the first hour) but it used to be CBS. I remember hearing that song. Maybe Rush's people send that out for stations that need it.

In case I haven't mentioned it, Dial Global standards played Michael Jackson's "Gone Too Soon". Yes, he was. Is that one too tame for today's AC? It fits perfectly with the mostly mellow sound of what is called standards these days. And the format does include a lot of both old and new songs that actually are standards.

I was amazed in an office to hear a Katy Perry type song followed by the station ID for the station I thought it was, followed by "Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon. That seems so out of character now.

I never hear anybody play that Michael Jackson song.

Premium Choice AC FLOORED me the other day. They rolled "Up Where We Belong" by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes! That took a little prodding around in the vault.

Dial Global *standards* with Michael Jackson? Seriously, if you call yourselves a STANDARDS station, play Frank Sinatra and the Carpenters. Not MJ. Too upbeat for standards.

They do, of course. But the song I mentioned fits in very well.

"Ride Like the Wind", especially with the guitar at the end, does not. And I think the next song was "Wanted" by Perry Como.

Another MJ song played by DG: "The Girl Is Mine".

"Now, Michael, we're not going to fight about this."

I'm not saying it fits the format, but it's not too far out of place. Now how does AC feel about this one?

I've been thinking about this thread since the boards went down, and how impossible it's becoming to keep track. Since so many AC's have all but whacked down the 80s to almost nothing and skipped the 90s outside of a few dozen tracks, it's getting to be a case of "what 80s and 90s songs DOES AC play?"

I did hear Duran Duran's "Ordinary World" on my local variety hits station the other day. Huge hit for them. I think it's 1992, but AC doesn't touch it.

With a more upbeat presentation AC stations have whacked many on the old reliable standbys. Michael Bolton has been assigned to TV commercials, and Celine Dions return to the format flopped.

Love KQEZ 106.3 in Idaho Falls! Heard last night: "That's The Way It Is" Celine Dion, "Wind Beneath My Wings" Bette Midler, "Up Where We Belong" Joe Cocker and a few other not so common ones.

I'm glad to have access to this thread again. This is one of the first threads I thought of after the site disappeared.

"Up Where We Belong" is a staple on Premium Choice AC. I guess that can be attributed to the fact that it's from a popular movie ("An Officer & A Gentleman"), but I haven't heard anybody else play it. Premium Choice can play some rather edgy selections, but they still delve back in to the 70s/80s/90s for some older, slower stuff (I recently heard Billy Joel's "She's Always A Woman").

On my online AC station, I play a lot of upbeat tracks, and current stuff, but I play a lot of softer 80s (some 70s/90s) AC hits also. My listeners love the softer stuff too. I think it really makes it sound better than today's approach to the format.

KMGL played "Ordinary World" once in a while. They usually played it during the "Work Perk Lunch Hour" (All Requests Hour) at 12PM, so I wouldn't count "Ordinary World" as part of KMGL playlist at all. "Hungry Like A Wolf" is an overplayed 1982 song on KMGL. In fact, I heard "Ordinary World" on KMGL over-the-air once when we were actually visiting Oklahoma City for one day in Summer 2010, NOT while I was streaming KMGL over the internet from here in Dallas. (FYI: KMGL wasn't even streaming online at the time.) And guess what? My mom is 51 at the time, but she liked the song. Best fit for AC's. :p

WLMG played "Ordinary World" often in 2012.

I heard "Colors of the Wind" by Vanessa Williams this morning. It would really be strange for an AC station not to play this one.

I heard this song on WLYF, while streaming WLYF online in Fall 2013. WLYF played it occasionally for quite some time in Fall 2013.

I've been hearing "I'll Always Love You" and "Love Will Lead You Back" by Taylor Dayne lately on WLYF and WLTW. Once in a while I also hear "I'll Always Love You" on Awesome 80's Weekend on KMGL. You don't hear those songs much on AC's these days besides "Tell It To My Heart".
