Do radio stations really need a DJ?

Similar to those Telephone automated response units that speak to you, and you can reply, soon every Station will be able to use synthesized On Air voices, and no, they wont sound like Professor Stephen Hawkins. You mean that sales people will finally be able to get rid of those annoying, egomaniac "air personalities" and be able to display their real creativity in spite of their annoying voices?

I vote that we start with production. Let's test the new "Automated Disk Jockey" on the stellar commercial copy that comes from the Sales Department. Let's see if "Jack 2006" can read :80 worth of copy in :60, while still making it intelligible.

I'm not sure if it will make remotes more or less interesting. Just think, you can let listeners and/or clients be a "disk jockey for a minute" by simply typing on a laptop keyboard!

We'll see how many of them "talk too much".

I think he is being facetious ... at least at this point in time.

But speech synthesizer technology has been improving, and it could very well happen. How it would do remotes is another question.

Simple.

The "Automote" option is nearly complete. It can be used with nearly ANY brand automation system.

You type in a list of talking points and it automatically generates patter, some of which actually makes sense. Something similar is already in beta-test under at least three names on the Off-Air board. One types in a list of "today's talking points" and it automatically generates a post that "sells" those points in elaborate detail.

Future generations of the Automote will include:

Pre-produced patter; you don't have to do anything more than tell the system where the remote is (car dealer/discount store/shoe store, etc.), The name and address where the remote is taking place. Sex and approximate age range of "random" people to be "interviewed". They'll just walk up to the display, which
features an inflatable "jock" and say "Hi!" the automation takes over from there, first asking a name which it inserts into the "interview". There is a built-in profanity filter which doesn't "beep" out unsuitable words; it just changes them to something more acceptable...faithfully replicating the voice characteristics of the person being "interviewed". The "Autojock" option includes a small compressor that fills the inflatable with hot air and then recirculates it to keep it at temperature.

CNN is said to have nearly completed their work on an automated news reporter into which one simply speaks (requires NO keyboard skills) "today's talking points" and it creates "news", including "actualities". So far the software outfit doing the work is hung up on the "truthiness" detector. It works a little too well so there is only minimal output. They're confident they can overcome that and have solicited assistance from a PR firm that has worked for both major political parties in preparing regional radio spots.

Insiders say the first on-air use of the system by CNN will occur just 4 weeks from today! There is some suggestion that FOX may get their competing system
on the air just hours before CNN on the very same day.

I agree on this to a point; but establishing personality
and unique content and points of view makes this practical in
only the simplistic sense.

But again, technological advances can be surprising.

There is one simplistic radio application to this that I know
of right now...and for its purpose, its suprisingly good -
although its a limited number of recorded phrases assembled
together to make a weather forecast:

At least you didn't say I was full of Crap!. Yesterday I attempted to cancel my ISP, and the automated attendant I talked with really seemed to understand me, spoke perfect English, was very polite, and had great tone and inflection in her voice. Her delivery was incredible. In fact I have no doubt she was a professional Voice Over artist. This application could be used for commercial Broadcasting. I'd post the AOL cancellation number where you could sample her, however I would be devastated if I had two posts taken away in a single day :)

Oh, I think you're wrong.

At the stations I consult, I prefer live, local talent to voicetracking. If a station I consult uses voicetracking, I recommend in the strongest possible terms that it be done by local station personnel and VTd no further than 12 hours in advance (although there are sometimes exceptions to the rule, like having the local jocks cut VTs for their weekend shifts on Friday).

At one station, I briefly VTd the overnight shift remotely for a few weeks. It sounded awful, because I had no way to sound "live and local" under the circumstances.

Count me as voting against a synthesized on-air voice.<P ID="signature">______________
