Do they do this on purpose?

Almost every time a newspaper mentions a tv station or a radio station, or a tv station mentions a radio station, there's an error in the call letters, the frequency, the band, the format, or something. I don't hear the mistakes on the radio as much, probably just because there isn't that much radio news on these days, hastily constructed by interns.

This time, it's the N&R online, at least for the last few hours:

"WFYM News?" Whaaaat?

So do they do this on purpose, or is it legitimately an error almost every single time one type of news media mentions another one?

well, not really on purpose.
here's my 2 cents....
the 20-y-o intern has no
history without the internet.
W...F....whatever. it's like editing
a story about the Korean War.
Pusan? Puchan? not even
worth Google's time.

Yeah I figure it's just writer error too, but dang if it don't happen almost every single story.
Of course, it has to make you wonder how accurate the other stories are....

If I had to guess, I would say some sort of typo trying to list WAZZ 1490 AM, which is in the Beasley Cluster with Foxy 99, WKML, 96-5 The Drive, et. al.

Back to the subject at hand, though, they do seem to botch call letters alot, whether it's a simple mis-order or an inaccurate guess.
