Re: Definition of Insanity?

And this is where the PD comes in. Research is a tool, not a final decision.

I'm glad you finally said this! It seems many perceive research as the end all. Sure, it is powerful information, but in the end it does not make decisions. In fact, there is a common rule when writing questions for research to be sure that you DON'T put the respondent in a position to program the radio station. Find out their perceptions on whatever you're researching, and use the collective data to make decisions yourself.

Good news folks, as the originator of this conversation. I share this with you: After three hard fought years I brought a Classic Rocker, then knocking on deaths door, to the number one position in my market (fall 2008). A CLASSIC ROCK STATION! Same ole polished turds day after day! Why? People, personality, content! Radio is not dead even though a percentage of the artists on my playlist are.

Argue all you want, nothing like a healthy discussion! When we are all done blaming and dissing let's get down to fixing and coming up with solutions. I realize this will tough in a public forum, let's face it when I come up with the new blockbuster idea I won't want to share it so I can keep all the glory for myself... after all it will be my idea that changes the industry for the better! ;)

Absolutely. There is lots of research that is useless or of reduced utility because not enough time was spent on the recruit specifications that determine who will be included in the project and in the questinnaire, avoiding question bias or"defaulting to the best but inaccurate answer" and such.

And no research tells you how to program... just what some of the ingredients are. There is a reason why Wolfgang Puck does not work at McDonalds...

Vrrrooom!

I guess what this proves is that you don't need to play 5-thousand separate songs (to get "variety"). You just need to play the well recognized "polished turds" (as you say), then add the "spice" (which is what goes in between the songs). There's not a programmer on this planet half worth his or her salts that doesn't understand this. Just some bean-counters in a few corporations.

Do both things well, and you have a winner! Congratulations on your book!

Content is the key. But remember, good content can come either locally, or outside the market. And having said this, let the arguing continue.....
