Dr. Laura son linked to lurid Web page
Site contained violent, sex-oriented images one official called 'repulsive'

The soldier son of talk radio relationship counselor Laura Schlessinger is under investigation for a graphic personal Web page that one Army official has called "repulsive."
The MySpace page, publicly available until Friday when it disappeared from the Internet, included cartoon depictions of rape, murder, torture and child molestation; photographs of soldiers with guns in their mouths; a photograph of a bound and blindfolded detainee captioned "My Sweet Little Habib"; accounts of illicit drug use; and a blog entry headlined by a series of obscenities and racial epithets.
The site is credited to and includes many photographs of Deryk Schlessinger, the 21-year-old son of the talk radio personality known simply as Dr. Laura. Broadcast locally on 570 KNRS, "Family Values Talk Radio," the former family counselor spends three hours daily taking calls and offering advice on morals, ethics and values. She broadcast a show from Fort Douglas, in Salt Lake City, last week.

Re: "Doctor" Laura's filthy son

Not the first time for a story about "lurid images" on the Internet involving "Dr" Laura.
Nine years ago, those images were nude photos of "Dr" Laura herself, taken during her affair (while married) with pioneer talk show host Bill Ballance in the 70s. First "Dr" Laura was a caller, then a regular caller, then a member of the show's panel, then she got Ballance's job. Somewhere along the line, they had an affair and she posed for some pictures, which Ballance later sold to a company which posted them online. She got Ballance's job; he got the last laugh.

At least some of the nude pictures of "Dr" Laura are still online. If you do an image search on Google you can find some (turn off Safe Search first).

Now the family tradition continues.

(to the tune of her theme, New Attitude)
hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo...I like to pose in the nude!

Some think the page was a hoax and not actually done by Son of Dr L.

Re: "Doctor" Laura

Good grief! Did I just hear Dr Laura tonight advising a young girl to have her uterus removed?

Where did she get her degree anyway?

Actually her phd is in physiology not psychology. She received at Columbia in 1974.
The self-styled proponent of conservative family values has fallen short of the mark in her own life.

  • Never got along with her father
  • Was estranged from her mother for 14 years
  • Her mother died in 2002 in Los Angeles. (The same city where Dr. Laura lived then.) Her decomposed body was discovered several weeks later.
  • She's been estranged from her sister since the mid 1970's
  • She's got some issues about religion. Was an agnostic most of her adult life. Converted to Conservative Judaism in 1996, Orthodox Judaism in 1998, and Christianity in 2003
  • Disapproves of divorce and pornography, but as a divorcee she posed for a classic "beaver shot" http://www.bradblog.com/?p=4580&print=1 with her legs spread.

and there's more http://talkingradio.blogspot.com/

Baroosk, I like your board but these constant attempts (here and there) to engage in character assassination of those with whom you disagree politically is getting old. It makes you no different than they. "He who is without sin" and all that. Is your own personal life so pure? Besides, one who looks at dirty pictures has no right to sneer at someone who lets her boyfriend take them (on the understanding that the pictures are for personal viewing only).

You don't like her show? OK, what's wrong with her format or presentation?
You disagree with her advice? What exactly do you disagree with and why? (And no out of context blurbs.)
Enough name-calling.

And someone already pointed this out on your own board: You do have a double standard for those you agree with and those you disagree with, especially over who is allowed to use academic titles in radio. Rush overusing prescription pain-killers: Bad! Franken and recreational drugs at SNL: Oh, well.

If anyone knows of nude photos of Stephanie Miller, please provide a link. Likewise Laura Ingraham.
If anyone knows of nude photos of Randi Rhodes, I don't want to hear about it (or think about it).

Re: "Doctor" Laura's Credentials

For the record, the license requirements listed on the state website for Marriage and Family Therapist (previous called "Marriage, Family and Child Counseling") in California are:
  • A qualifying doctor's or master's degree with specific coursework requirements
  • 3,000 hours of supervised experience
  • 15 additional hours of post-degree required coursework

Dr. Laura attended the Master's program at the Rossiter School of Education at the University of Southern California. The catalog description of the two year Marriage and Family Therapy (Marriage, Family and Child Counseling) program are:

USC Catalog said:
Master of Marriage and Family Therapy
The program for the Master of Marriage and Family Therapy is offered for those students seeking to prepare for the practice of marriage, family and child counseling. The curriculum of the master’s program is grounded in the applications of the discipline of counseling psychology to clinical work with couples, families and children in the family context. Students who complete this specialized professional degree program and who fulfill the additional state-mandated requirements are eligible for the State of California’s Marriage and Family Therapy license. A minimum of 51 units of graduate-level course work is required. A minimum of four semesters is required for completion of the degree program. Students must demonstrate an acceptable level of counseling proficiency, a grade of B (3.0) or better, in EDCO 560 Practicum in Counseling before being permitted to complete the master’s degree. (Students with little or no prior counseling experience are advised to audit the practicum course the first time it is taken. Two registrations for credit and one audit are permitted in EDCO 560.) Of the 51 units, the last 14 units must be completed at USC.

Required Course Sequence (Units)
EDCO 500 The Counseling Process (3)

Schlessinger's PhD is in Physiology and Cellular Biophysics from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Her doctoral dissertation topic was: "Effects of insulin on 3-0-methylglucose transport in isolated rat adipocytes."

Dr Ruth has an EdD (a professional, not academic, doctorate in education). Dr. Joyce Brothers has a PhD in psychology (research, not clinical psychology; her dissertation topic was "An analysis of the enzyme activity of the conditioned and unconditioned salivary response."). Dr. Joy Browne has a PhD in clinical psychology and is a licensed clinical psychologist.

No I think the saying is "he who does not have microphone and the ability to reach 250 million people each week can cast as many stones as he wants at he who does have a microphone and the ability to reach 250 million people each week."

You don't like her show? OK, what's wrong with her format or presentation?

I answer this question on my blog. However, for those who don't want to go there here are few things that disagree with about Dr. Laura's advice.
  • no sex outside of marriage
  • moms shouldn't work
  • divorce is wrong
  • abortion is wrong
  • living together without marriage is wrong
  • getting married too young is wrong and foolish
  • homosexuality is destructive and "a biological error",
  • gay marriage is wrong
  • girls should not dress like "sluts"(I really don't like this one.)

Yeah, but Franken never said this:

—"If people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up"

Rush Limbaugh said this.

If anyone knows of nude photos of Stephanie Miller, please provide a link. Likewise Laura Ingraham.
If anyone knows of nude photos of Randi Rhodes, I don't want to hear about it (or think about it).

The reason is that there are no nude pictures of Miller, Ingraham, and Rhodes. (on the net that is.)

Yea well Baroosk, how many people can you reach in a week? Just askin'. How many sponsors and affiliates do YOU have, hmmmmmm?

I'm not ashamed to say that I quite AGREE with that whole list you posted of her "advice." Civilized people would. I'm with Al.

Your God, Howard Stern's commandments may differ from those, but the 10 in the Bible bear a close resemblance. It is amusing to me and blasphemous that you can pervert the Bibles language as you did in your post.

Amen Brother!

(I thought Howard Stern was God?)

Baroosk,

I don't have much use for religion or for people who try to shove their ideas down other people's throats. But people who listen to Schlessinger choose to do so. Those who call and ask for advice, choose to do so. And any of those people who take her advice choose to do so.

I haven't followed the kind of advice she gives. Neither did Dr. Laura in her younger days, which gives her more authority, not less. She is familiar with the consequences of the kind of behavior she argues against. And I'd have to agree that people who follow the kind of advice she gives avoid the kinds of problems her listeners call in with.

It's no different than Dr. Ronald Hoffman and Dr. Dean Edell telling me to give up beer, wine and foods I like and to start doing things I hate (exercise). Or Dave Ramsey saying if you can't pay cash, do without. Laura says give up some fun stuff, hold off on doing what feels good at the moment, don't always take the easy way, and maybe your life will work better. What part of this do you disagree with?

No, it's clear that you disagree with the teachings of both the Torah and the Bible. And, as an American, you have the right to reject religion and morality and live your life as you see fit.

Laura says give up some fun stuff, hold off on doing what feels good at the moment, don't always take the easy way, and maybe your life will work better.

Not to mention the whole "burning in Hell for eternity" part.

Sure, live like some barbarian in the DARK AGES with no morality, no law and no Faith.

Then rape and murder get laughs (see dopey and anthony) and when YOUR daughter is raped and YOU are robbed, YOU'LL crab about why nobody cared. THEN you'll look for God.

Money money money money money money money money - There is your God - o - and filthy immoral "people" like Howard making millions. Yup - THAT'S entertainment!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not bitter or jealous of "Howard." I made more than a million when our 4 stations sold. I've been very successful in business (funeral homes) since then. My Church and a few charities are beneftting.

I'm very sad for the state that the world is in.

This is what I mean about the religious trying to shove their religion down other people's throats.

Baroosk says Dr. Laura has "issues" with religion because she has explored various belief systems and apparently not been satisfied. Maybe she is more enlightened than they are. Dr. Laura's advice is pragmatic. Do-this, avoid-that and maybe your life will be better. Dr. Laura thinks for herself and she makes her own rules. What she has come up with may be similar to the rules Jesus Freaks attribute to some hypothetical diety but unlike them, she has clearly thought it through for herself. She doesn't do things just because the Bible told her to. And she acts out of choice, not because she's afraid of "burning in hell for eternity."

Sure, live like some barbarian in the DARK AGES with no morality, no law and no Faith.
You mean back when the church was running things? Maybe you should have paid more attention in World History class.

No, it's clear that you disagree with the teachings of both the Torah and the Bible.
The Torah is part of the Bible. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Maybe you should have paid more attention in Sunday School.

Jesus loved sinners. Jesus preferred to hang out with sinners. Jesus could not stand hypocrites, the religious and the self-righteous; the holier than thou types. He recommended not judging others. It's very interesting the parts of the Bible some people chose to remember, and the parts they chose to forget.

I'm starting to be more impressed with Dr. Laura.

While we are re-instituting the fairness doctrine and ownership caps, maybe we can get religious infomercials and brokered preachers off the air, too. At least those who buy time on commercial religion stations should have to pay taxes like any other commercial advertiser.

FIRST the statement was made that "it's clear that you disagree with the teachings of both the Torah and the Bible."

- Yes, the Torah IS contained in the Bible, but I believe that statement in context MEANT that both Jews and Christians agree on God and morality.

Al, I find it funny that you ignored this; "rape and murder get laughs (see dopey and anthony) and when YOUR daughter is raped and YOU are robbed, YOU'LL crab about why nobody cared. THEN you'll look for the protection of God and laws."

Al said; "This is what I mean about the religious trying to shove their religion down other people's throats."

- Look, you don't have to reply to any of this. I only posted to begin with, because of the views here that are so diametrically opposed to mine. I have NO interest in any attempt to change YOUR humanist pagan, barbarian view, even though it sounds totally ignorant to me.

I'm impressed that obviously, YOU know EVERYTHING, and 2000 years of Jesus, who is both God and man, and His human followers, (namy of who were martyrs for the Faith) and a few thousand years of the Jews before Him, trying to teach people like you, didn't work on you. Jesus even gave Judas and Pilate a free will. Go for it! No sweat from me.

Also, YOU are the guy who should crack your WORLD HISTORY book. However, I should cut you some slack, because you may not have learned that in the highly inferior public schools.

The CORRECT hsitory books will tell you that If it WASN'T for the Church just prior to the "dark ages" you would be even have a LESS civilized view than you show, today.

Here's why; It was the CHURCH (the monks in monasteries) who PRESERVED the (limited) past knowledge of the time prior to the dark ages. Evenually, when the tide again turned, the Barbarians were defeated, and knowledge again became important, civilization didn't start from zero.

Dr. Laura is merely "another flavor" of Faith, designed for a-religious media. She knows that without morality you have a barbarian society. However, without sponsors she's gone. Someday that will happen, but noone can stop the message.

Who made you, anyway? How did you come to be? Was it just chance?

Thanks.

Jesus loved sinners. Jesus preferred to hang out with sinners.

Let me attempt to put this into context in line with this discussion. The message of the Bible was the Jesus reached out to sinners in an attempt to persuade them to stop being sinners. As He said, the healthy have little need of a physician, it's the sick people who need healing.

People like Dr. Laura and other radio self-help talk show hosts attempt to provide moral help to those in need. Preaching to the choir is not as effective as preaching to those who need to hear a message of healing.

As for Dr. Laura's past indiscretions, I have to agree with the poster who pointed out that her checkered past makes her better qualified to speak about the downside of leading an immoral life. Someone who has seen the downside of an immoral lifestyle is better able to relate first hand to the benefits of practicing a moral lifestyle.

I believe that statement in context MEANT that both Jews and Christians agree on God and morality.

That is correct.
