So I got on the show blog and it looks like the fellas have been suspended. How long? Why? Is termination a possibility?

Your thoughts?

Termination? nah as Mainelli has stated publicly that he loves the show. Doghouse on the other hand are becoming their own worst enemies in terms of their attitudes. They had developed a rep as hard to work with before they got to NY and they're merely perpetuating it these days. A shame as they have much potential.

In the thread called "And when do these CBS guys get fired" here in the New York board, I just posted a link to the segment that got the Dog House, well, in the dog house!

The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) wants the Doghouse taken to the pound.

Asian Americans Outraged Over Racist Radio Segment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 17, 2007

Asian Americans Outraged Over Racist Radio Segment
OCA calls for firing of DJs and producer responsible
Washington, DC – OCA, a national Asian Pacific American (APA) organization dedicated to ensuring social justice for Asian Pacific Americans, expressed outrage at an offensive radio segment aired on WFNY 92.3 FM (New York City) on 5 April 2007, and re-aired on 19 April 2007.

The segment features a prank call made by station DJs JV and Elvis to a Chinese restaurant in which they make numerous comments that demean Asian Pacific Americans, women, and the gay community. During the six-minute segment, the DJs address restaurant employees as “Asian lady” and “Chinese man”; make demands for “lots of Asian food, son of a bitch”; and ask for “shrimp flied lice” and “some old dung.”

The DJs also accost one woman on the phone, saying, “Should I come to your restaurant so that I can see you naked… that way I can see your hot Asian spicy ass.” They tell another restaurant employee, “You are a very nice Chinese man… probably can’t drive for ------, but who cares.” The DJs also call one employee “faggy.”

“The blatant racism, sexism, and homophobia in this segment and in the DJs’ other work is appalling,” said, Ginny Gong, OCA National President, “We will be working with our chapters in the New York City metropolitan area as well as our partners in the civil rights community to seek an apology from WFNY and to demand that the DJs and producers who are responsible for airing this racist segment are fired.”

While one of the DJs has apologized and both have been suspended indefinitely without pay, OCA continued to issue demands that both DJs as well as the producer responsible be fired.

“Following so closely on the heels of the Don Imus incident, it is unbelievable that another CBS Radio affiliate would air such derogatory and demeaning content,” said Michael Lin, OCA National Executive Director, referring to radio personality Imus’ recent firing for offensive on-air remarks he made about members of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team. “The right of free speech is being abused by so-called ‘shock jocks’ and their producers to make crass and unnecessary comments at the expense of other peoples’ dignity.”

OCA was alerted to the radio segment by its local chapters in the New York City area. “What is especially disturbing to the Asian American community is that the segment first aired on April 5 – just a day after Don Imus referred to the Scarlet Knights, the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, as ‘nappy-headed hos,’” said Vick Shu Smolin, OCA-New York chapter president, “Even more infuriating is that after CBS rightly fired Don Imus on April 12, JV & Elvis aired the segment AGAIN on April 19. It is apparent that not only did JV & Elvis not learn anything from the Don Imus scandal, but CBS and CBS Radio decided that Asian Americans are easy prey for racist radio broadcast.”

Florence Chen, OCA-New Jersey chapter presidentadded, “New Jersey is home to numerous technology, manufacturing and telecommunication firms and home to nearly three-quarters of a million Asian Pacific Americans. Until we are satisfied with the actions of 92.3FreeFM, we will be calling on the strength of the Asian American market to urge advertisers to pull their support.”

“Once again, radio has tried to gain ratings to the detriment of Asian Americans,” said John Tandana, OCA-Long Island chapter vice president, ‘The segment lasted over six minutes, the entire time casting Asian Americans and women in a demeaning manner. Asian Americans have and will continue to contribute immensely to this country’s economy, intellect and culture. We will not allow talk radio to spread stereotypes that hurt our community.”

“If the executives of CBS, CBS Radio and 92.3FreeFM do not fire the DJs and their producer, they are sending a very strong message to the Asian American community that they do not care,” said Jeannette Wang, OCA-Westchester/Hudson Valley chapter president, “A strong signal must be sent that this type of broadcasting is unacceptable.”

Founded in 1973 as the Organization of Chinese Americans, OCA, a national organization with over 80 chapters and affiliates across the country, is dedicated to advancing the social, economic, and political well-being of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States.

I've heard JV and Elvis a few times, pretty typical of the average FREE-FM lineup... utterly terrible. So it doesn't surprise me in the least that these Stern clones find themselves in trouble when doing a 'bit' that really wasn't that funny.

All of that having been said, the issue here is bigger than Imus, the Doghouse or any other show; political correctness and the unwillingness by the major players in the radio industry (CBS, Clear Channel, et al) to show any type of backbone whatsoever makes it virtually impossible to do a show anymore for fear of stepping on someone's toes. It's this type of cowardly attitude that is sure to drive more nails into the terrestrial radio coffin and ensure that online and satellite radio ventures dominate within the next 20 years.

It's an incredible tragedy that a special interest group or "organization" that contains 16 people becomes the thought police for General Managers and Program Directors to follow in many markets. I suppose we can blame the gutless upper management types that actually cave into the demands of the Jesse Jackson's of the world or the hosts that feel they have to apologize the minute they feel any pressure whatsoever--after all, apologies are admittance of liability. I guess the radio business can't pull out the gun and shoot itself in the foot fast enough these days... what a shame.

Again, this is not about "The Doghouse", it's about a business needing to take a stand for creativity, free expression and courage. Furthermore this issue speaks to a greater need for our society to grow up, laugh and be able to accept barbs thrown out there by folks just trying to make a living in a decaying business.

After the flap with Don Imus, you'd think people like Dog House would learn from such incidents. Uh, reality check! It's a shame that broadcasters have to wait until one of their hosts crosses the line before taking action. Shouldn't the ground rules for situations like these be laid out before they actually happen?

When Imus made the comments, I don't think it was a big deal until a few days later. He apologized on his Friday show believe, and made the comment Tuesday? Don't know for sure.

So saying the Dog House did this a day after the comments by Imus were made are irrelevant...

I listen to the show, I have to say.....NOT FUNNY!!!! I didn't laugh one bit of the joke, besides could they come up with new stuff. Just change the format back to Alternative/Rock at least they have some more advertising than FREE FM. (Coming from Asian-American descendant).

Before anyone claims that the Doghouse is anti-Asian, you may want to do some research and google "Natasha Yi". NSFW, and J.V.'s S.O. YMMV, GBTW.

Just flipping through the digital cable tier, and on BBC World News, their scroll at the bottom of the screen reads, "CBS Radio in the U.S. suspends two DJ's for a prank on-air call that angered Chinese groups." Note it doesn't mention the "DJ's" by name, but the fact that it's made any waves overseas just shows you how huge this story is purporting to be.

If you think what these guys did was bad.... check out what happens on a daily basis in Seattle on the ratings giant of a rock station... 99.9 KISW. The mid-day jock, a no talent hack named "Ricker", does a bit called "Chinese Pizza" where he answers the "rock line" pretending to be a Chinese man working at a pizza place. He does the full-on stereo-typical chinese accent and more.

The station (owned by Entercom) backs him 100%, they used to sell T-Shirts that said "Chienese Pizza" with a little asian man with slanty eyes, a long mustache, and a pointy hat. They've also given away audio of him doing this on station "sampler" Cd's. Here's a link from the KISW website where they sell a clip of him doing the accent as a "ringtone" for your cell phone.

I have no idea how he gets away with this and why Entercom has not only never stopped him, but has encouraged him to continue. Some asain group needs to protest out west...

Dog house are not anti asian and that has nothing to do with JV being married to a Kroean woman. While in SF which has a huge asian population they did a lot with the asian community, and in truth the bit was very, very, funny and actually an old bit that had been played a few times in the past. The problem is that barely a week past the Imus fiasco and CBS is under the lamp again for what some will categorize as the same thing as Imus did ( if you ask me they were/are worlds apart in terms of intent etc) this really could spell bad news for the dog house. My god they were talking about "the two radio talents from cbs radio who got suspended" without saying the name of the show one the VIEW for god's sake.

The reason you won't likely hear any howls of protest over this thing in Seattle is because Entercom is standing by their guy - they haven't been the victim (yet) of the lotharios who want to restrict free, unpopular and insensitive speech on the public airwaves.

CBS caved in quickly under pressure over Imus. Now they're an easy target. Frankly, I'm surprised Opie & Anthony haven't gotten the boot yet, considering their history. I'm sure Sharpton has some minions recording everything on Free FM daily, looking for his next victim.

When did it become a right in New York City to free from insensitive speech?

Here in the rest of America many still agree, "if you don't like it, don't listen," is the perfect attitude. :)

Not true Zach, CBS had no choice with Imus, they didn't cave too soon, you are wrong it was the exact opposite: What made things worse for CBS was the fact that they were completely reactive rather than pro-active. They didnt suspend until after MSNBC suspended him, they did not fire him until after MSNBC had fired him. They gave the appearance that they were not doing anything, because they were'nt. They were hoping it would blow over but when big corproate sponsors started bailing thats when he had to go, it wasnt about Sharpton, it was about Staples, proctor and Gamble, GM etc.

JV and Elvis are different than Imus, they're not trying to be journalists, they've always been bonehead "shock jocks" whereas Imus had morphed into the poor man's Tim Russert, he spoke to pols and would be pols, heads of state, he can't be both, he had left the shock jock thing behind years ago. JV and Elvis are not racist, but they obviously are not too bright to run the chinese bit barely a week after the dust has settled from Imus, you have to know cbs is still reeling from that and more importantly people are listening to CBS stations hoping to catch them pulling the same sort of dumb Imus stuff, becuase people generally suck that way.

Tower,

I don't think you get it. They ran the bit a day after Imus made the comments. The controversy didn't even start until Friday of the week when he issued an apology on air.

It was unfortunate they ran it, but it wasn't like they knew it was a touchy situation and then ran the bit.

I can see where you're coming from, Tower... But I thought the sponsors that dropped out were all on MSNBC. At least that's how I saw it reported. It still seems like, if CBS had grown a pair, they woulda said "so long" to the failing cable channel and kept Imus' back.

Either way, CBS is in the crosshairs at the moment and it was bad timing for JV and Elvis. Since they came from San Francisco, it seems like any so-called rascist comedy against Asians would have been called out back then, instead of now. Or maybe I'm being rascist and biased by assuming there's a lot of Asians in the Bay Area. ::)

Not only was this bit not funny but it is much more than a simple phone prank gone wrong, it's racial and sexual harrassment and a clear misuse of public airwaves. I certainly don't want my airwaves used for such crap.

And if Imus can get fired for uttering a three word offhanded remark, these losers should be fired and imprisoned instead of a slap-on-the-wrist suspension. But I suspect this is the most these jerks will get because the Asian-American community does not have two loudmouth, showboating, media grabbers to make a stink over it.

No actually it was not like that. THe sponsors (staples GM ETc) had cancelled from the CBS show, from the actual Imus in the morning radio show, that is why he got booted. That is the only thing that really speaks in this corporate culture, the money issue. Still in all they were completeely reactive, they watched as msnbc lead the way morally speaking. IT had nothing to dow ith cbs having a pair, they did the only thing they could have.

Wordlife I know what you're saying, the fact is that the bit had been run a few times, it was part of "best of" so it was not tthe first time. Also to people like Starscream who have posted They're not anti asian, JV is married to a korean, that means nothing really. That is not to say that that disqualifies one from being racist etc, the bedroom is no indicator of someonhe's racial standing, Jackie Clarke in her defense of JV and Elvis on Fox made that very same point stating that her father has been married to a few asian women but was still incredibly racist toward asians, or maybe he's just crazy!..lol.... look at Strom Thurmond who has a black daughter but was certianly a racist man. THAT BEING SAID I HAPPEN TO KNOW THAT JV AND ELVIS ARE NOT RACIST, they're just not too smart!

;D
