Don Bleu moving to KKSF in January

I just thought of a good comparison to Don Bleu - "Emperor" Gene Nelson, who started in Top 40 at KYA as a young man, then moved over to MOR radio in his middle age. When the MOR format died in the 80s, he finished his career at KSFO/KYA-FM, which played "Rock and Roll Classics"....Oldies, in other words. I remember reading that the PD at KSFO/KYA in those days refused to use the word "Oldies" because it sounded...old. I believe Gene was a bit younger than Don is now when he retired in the 90s.

Interesting bit of trivia - Gene was hired by 1260/KYA in 1965 to replace morning man Bill Drake, because the station wanted Drake to concentrate on his PD duties.

Bill Drake was LONG gone from KYA in 1965....1962 was when he left?

My mistake - 62 is probably correct. By 1965, Drake had already passed through Fresno, had programmed KGB, and was putting his flagship station - KHJ - on the air.

If you're old enough, think back to the glory days of AM Top 40 radio in the 60s and 70s - or even CHR FM radio of the 80s. Most jocks were in their 20s and 30s - you could have probably found just a few in their 40s - but I doubt you could have found any in their mid 60s.

I'm guessing that Alex Bennett probably hit his mid-50s toward the end of his time on Live 105, but he's about the only exception I can think of.

And indeed listeners of a certain age prefer to hear DJs in their age group. Alex Bennett and Howard Stern have the benefit of thinking young, but most DJs really don't, and you can hear it in what they say and how they talk.

Not just Gene Nelson, but lots of DJs moved to other stations as they got older. Tom Saunders went from KYA to what, KIOI? and then eventually to KOIT, for instance, Bobby Ocean from KFRC to KOIT, lots of LA DJs from rockers to KRTH, etc.

What little money I have is on Seacrest mornings, live in the afternoons. And I could drop a name but that wouldn't be fair.

Maybe Star 101.3 should bring in Eric and Kathy from The Mix in Chicago to do Mornings ;D

That if Seacrest does not renew his contract with E, or American Idol if the show will exist in the next few years. But I do remember Seacrest on KIOI right before 101.3 became Star 101.3 and I do remember his shift happening in the afternoons after the late Rick Shaw finished his midday show. I doubt Seacrest wants to do a local San Francisco show again. I do know he was doing a national syndicated countdown show and a morning drive show on Star98.7 and KIIS-FM in LA before E and American Idol came into play. But I will miss Don Bleu on 101.3 but good luck on KKSF even though he is right next door from 101.3 in the Clear Channel studios.

I don't think crguy was suggesting that Seacrest would do a local SF show. I assume what crguy meant was that CC would simulcast his KIIS-FM show from LA on Star.

Considering the amount of local production work that goes into the existing Seacrest show, a live simulcast sounds kind-of unlikely. They work hard to make it sound as local as it does (which is admittedly not very). I can't see Ryan doing a live show that speaks to both regions effectively.

Seacrest in mornings on Star wasn't my suggestion - you may be right. But it has been done before. Most notably, Mark and Brian from KLOS were simulcast on KRQR 97.3 here for a year or two in the 90s - and that was an ABC station sharing a show with a CBS station.

While Mark & Brian's show stayed mostly LA-centric, they did come to SF on occasion to do some stunts - most famously, the shower they took with San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordon. The ensuing photo of the naked, flabby, and pasty Jordan standing in the shower with the DJ duo brought him ridicule, and was considered one of the reasons he lost re-election to Willie Brown that November.

Naturally, the photo lives on:

Wait Doesn't Seacrest have 2 radio shows where he does a syndicated countdown show in where Seacrest replaces Casey Kasem. But on the KIIS-FM show he replaces Rick Dees I think we have to wait until American Idol is dead to find out.
But by the Way Ronn Owens of KGO had a short stint simulcasting his KGO show on KABC but his KABC ratings sucked but KGO-AM ratings did better.

Wow By the way that Frank Jordan picture in 1995 was considered the biggest nudity picture done by a politician until Anthony Weiner did his nudity shots in June 2011.

Regarding Lkeller opinion of Goss and Garrett. They did have the best morning numbers in the history of KFRC being on 99.7 it was a popular show. Note I said 99.7 not to be confused with the Doctor Don years on KFRC 610

I didn't say that Goss & Garrett weren't popular - only that I didn't find them particularly compelling. And if they were so popular, why did CBS move them to Young Country (93.3), and promote the horrifying Ron & Cammy to mornings on KFRC? Why would you move a big hit to your 'minor league' franchise, so to speak?

They didn't move Goss & Garrett to Young Country. Garrett left radio and moved to Phoenix.
On Young Country they brought in another female DJ and gave her the phony name "Patty Garrett" - it was a dumb stunt that failed miserably.

What's playing on 103.7 is not oldies by any stretch of anyone's imagination! Get Real. Classic Hits Yes!

Oh, it's oldies. No doubt about it.

This was discussed when 103.7 flipped from Classic Rock (The Band) to Classic Hits. I believe it was David E who made the distinction between "Oldies" as a classification for radio formats (no, 103.7 is not that), and "Oldies" as a brand name for the station. Most listeners don't know or care that 103.7 isn't Oldies as defined by radio programmers. To them, it's 'old' music, so the brand fits.

Just my 2 cents but this could turn out to be a smart move -- a lot of folks in that older demo have been disenfranchised by the changes at KFOG, and not all of them (particularly women) are thrilled by the choices left them (like K-Fox and The Bone). The KFOG Morning Show is becoming painful -- what with fiftysomething Webster trying to sound like he's 30, and the de-emphasis on news -- and I've said more than once in the last few months that I'd switch stations if there were anything even remotely viable (neither Greg Kihn nor Lamont & Tonelli are my cup of cappuccino). Hope they pair Mr Bleu with a halfway decent newsperson.
