Don Imus

Heard Don Imus loud and clear on 1550 the other morning. Now I know he was on the old talk lineup - but when did he begin again on this waste of electrical current? I mean seriously, if they were going to add at least one known talk show - wouldnt they put SOME effort in advertising?

In a word, no.

I happened across 1550 in the afternoon a few weeks ago, and their afteroon "syndicated" shows were from some little homespun network that I think has 3 or 4 stations in Connecticut. REALLY weak stuff, Ron Morris' Business Radio on 1360 is actually more interesting.

This station or 660 (which has a very good signal) should step up and put some of the national liberal shows on. Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Randi Rhodes and Thom Hartmann are all out there and can at least garner a few listeners, and might be saleable. The stuff they have on now has absolutely no chance.

1550 picked up the I-Man about two or three months ago. But I don't think they carry the 9-10 am hour.

The other problem is while I can get the station on my car radio I can't get it, even during daylight, from where I live, which is in the southwest part of the City of Pittsburgh.

Ironically, 1550 WAS business talk before this lineup took hold and Ron Morris reprogrammed/bought WMNY.

As far as the Lifestyles Network, I have to say that I do recognize some of the talent on there. Papa Joe Chevalier, for instance, was a national staple on the old "One-on-One" sports network of the 1990s that predated FOX and ESPN.

He is also from Western PA originally.

I was driving thru Castle Shannon one morning and thought I was DXing some weird music
station on 1550. Turns out it was bumper music for Imus on WLFP. I would have guessed
Ciudad Juarez from the signal quality...

Papa Joe was popular on syndication in the early 90's, I used to hear him in Jacksonville around 92-93. I think he was in his 60's or 70's then.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't that old. It would make him somewhere around 77-87 right now if he was.

I could see him in his 60s now, but not then!

Chevalier was a student at Duquesne in the late 60s, early 70s. He's probably about 60 now.

Do a Google search... he's got a website, blog, Facebook account, etc. From the pics, he appears to be about 60, if the pics are anywhere near current.

When I listened to him in the early 90's he used to say that he had retired to Vegas and was persuaded to do the show for 1-on-1 Sports, that's why I assumed he was older. Then again, maybe "retired" was a euphemism for professional gambler.

Heard that Lynn Cullen MIGHT guest on WMNY. I know three people who think that this is the beginning of the turnaround and the return to being a powerhouse like it was as WIXZ

I wish 1360 well, but I doubt those three people.

(On the other hand, Terry Lee reportedly is moving back to town. If they put HIM on the air AND change the call letters back
to WIXZ, they MIGHT have a chance of gaining some listeners...but I don't think anything will make that station a powerhouse
again.)

[/quote] Too Bad Renda Broadcasting wasted the time and Money to trade 1360 for 910. They could have done what WVIE Baltimore 1360 did, and looked into incressing night time power . WVIE now on 1370 is up to 50kw day 7700 night. and Off 1360. They started their move in 2001. now they are looking to incress their night time power to 21kw. Terry Lee is making More Local Venues. Stockdale Fire Hall and Palisades Dance hall. If Frankie Day can take a 750 watt daytimer And put it in the top 30 ratings wise. Just Think what he and Terry Lee could for 1360. Mr Renda Are you Listening?

To finish would have wasted the rest of their money....
My Point, Renda should had looked into improving the 1360 Signal With That Money.ie Incress nighttime Power, Move the Night time Xmiter Site Something like that.Instead of looking to Swap Freq,s.

I'll repeat my earlier point from other theads, there NO return on investment from improving the night signal on these aMs....

From what I understand, in order for the signal switch to be completed Renda would have had to build a new transmitter site in the South Hills and the process of acquiring the land and building the new site would have cost in the neighborhood of $5 million, an investment that would take decades to recoup given the billing for that station.

A Nighttime signal for 910 was not applied for with the FCC. Were they going to be Daytime Only?
