Double T 104.3

I still think a sports station devoted (basically) to one college is d.o.a. Tech didn't make an impact on the numbers when it was with the old stations, why should it make an impact now? Seriously, somebody give me an opinion on this. I'm interested in why anybody is interested in this station at all.

Whether the station will be successful or not is up in the air. History could very well repeat itself when it comes to numbers (Check out the numbers and look at KESN in Dallas). However, the reason we are interested in this station is because Ramar is trying something that hasn't been tried before. It's the 1st time LBK has had an all FM sports station. That is why I think its a big deal.

Actually, KKAM had a pretty good spike in the ratings during last football season (Fall '08).

Still, I am not sure if Lubbock can support 2 full time sports stations. Losing Tech football, I would imagine they will lose quite a bit of ratings and revenue compared to last season. Sounds like Williams & Hyatt are going to have to carry the station by themselves. Starting this week, they expanded their show from 4-7pm to 3-7pm.

As for Tech sports etc... I know that it was seen as a negative to have it take over 6 or more hours of programming during Football season on KFMX. Was KFMX really winning listeners on all those Saturdays or was it driving people away? I would imagine that KFMX is happy as hell to not have TECH FOOTBALL grabbing such a large portion of it's programming on those Saturdays anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised to see KKAM go through some sort of change. However, maybe GAP CORP allows the station to limp along. I just don't see how GAP CORP would allow that station to continue in it's current state. Do you leave it because it's not costing you money? Or do you drop it so that you can create new revenue? Yet, if you do that, what do you flip it too?

However, these are just my opinions.

Seen lots of markets where one radio group got out from under the weight of the contract and the dollars and inventory that goes with it and figured out they could make money without it. Also see lots of radio groups in the last decade or so give up way too much to get the rights and the prestige only to find out they couldn't make money with it and the lost a ton of inventory. Sorta like what Crow says about FMX. Did it really do anything for their bottom line? I doubt it. Was it an ego thing for their boss? Perhaps so.
There's tons of examples of stations doing great in sports radio without having the rights to any local teams. They make a killing during the week and punt on the weekends. Can KKAM do that? Can 104.3 cover the nut they've got to shell out now that they've got Texas Tech? Should be fun to watch.

the way i see it there are not alot of options for KKAM, and what they got is as good as it gets as far as revenue. what else can you do with a 1K AM station? run a music format? don't think so... they continue to do some kind of talk, so as to not screw with their news/talker.. and if it isn't SPORTS.... just cut the power to the transmitter, or maybe do it anyway.

Did 104 give up on trying to stream anything? I haven't heard anything from them lately.
Still no website as of today. Go to doublet1043.com and all you will get is their logo. I have not heard of them giving up on streaming.

So, I was finally able to catch the show today, that being the morning show, and.......... it didn't suck....... but it was lacking something. I don't know. I can say that I was bored with the whole Dallas Cowgirls JERRY-TRON conversation. And for a broadcaster, DJ, mic monkey or whatever to say "HEY STICK AROUND WE GOT SOME MORE STUFF COMING UP", I thought "WHAT THE HELL!". That's your front sell? Now, remember, it didn't suck, it just came across somewhat amateurish. And YES... I know those guys are not radio vets etc... but.... how long do you get to use that excuse.

I don't know... I like the idea of RAMAR doing something different, taking a chance, but I really can't see that station doing well in the ratings. I just feel that the market is not big enough. If it was a bigger market... sure.... but here?

Also, audio wise... it always sounds over modulated.

However, what the hell do I know! I'm trying to get used to saying "You want fries with that?"

As a Lubbock native and Tech grad who has lived in San Antonio for 25 years, it's tough to get radio coverage of Tech football here. For the last couple of years it's been on an FM station south of town with a weak signal so it was great to get so much TV coverage last year. I don't believe Tech athletics allows online broadcasting of Tech football. Last year I went to texastech.com to find the stations broadcasting the games, then went to their websites. Some would broadcast regular programming right up until gametime, then nothing. I actually listened to the first half of a game on a Dallas station, which went silent for the second half. I think texastech.com must have the exclusive rights for internet broadcasting, which you can subscribe to for $9.95 per month. We may not be able to get it on 104.3 at all

Double-T and KKAM are having a battle for pre-game coverage today. KKAM pre-game starts at 1pm while Double-T started pre-game shows at 9am for a 6pm kickoff!

A little overkill for a game against North Dakota, don't ya think? It would nice to hear some ESPN Radio for at least part of Saturday.
