Doug McIntyre Leaves KABC

I miss Doug overnight.

The Red Eye guys are a tough listen. Gary can't sight-read to save his life. When he reads a news article at length (which is often) he starts a sentence, realizes that he misunderstood the context, backs up and tries again. He tries to compose himself by laughing and pounding the table for 5-10 seconds. Eric is less frenetic but has a halting speech patter that's hard to take. Gary goes crazy if he thinks a caller might want to present a slightly different angle, cutting him/her off by yelling, "No-no-No-NO-NO!" after the caller gets out about three words.

It's really a bad show but unfortunately there's nothing else live overnight other than paranormal nonsense. I wish Doug could somehow come back to that slot.

I think Doug sold Red Eye Radio for $$$$.

I put 790 kabc on this morning the embarrassment of talk radio n leo terrell was on b7t on the websight it still says mcintyre in the morning. I immediately turned the station the station not a fan of leo.

Wow. Leo Terrell hosting your morning drive, even on an emergency fill-in basis, represents an all-time low. Guess Gloria Allred wasn't available.

Of course, it really isn't fair to take all the potshots from afar when we don't have the responsibility of actually trying to program this mess of a station with an unlistenable signal. So I think it is time to come up with some creative alternatives for a better use of the signal that can increase the ratings. I am not talking about format shifts to all Farsi or religious programming (which is the next inevitable step in real life) I am talking about suggestions for real formats (or at least temporary stunts) in English that can at least generate a buzz to let the public know the station even exists - and yes, that is what it has come to, the former #1 station in the metro that was the Dodger flagship has now been reduced to actually informing the populace of its mere existence.

So I will kick-off. The more out of the box the better, and nothing generates ratings like abject stupidity, so I say they should get with the times and play every version they can find of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" through at least Christmas if not the new year on a continuous loop. You may think my idea is moronic (and you may be right!), but remember, the *real-life* alternative is Leo Terrell in the mornings. I rest my case.

I think given the reality of all the things you mention, Leo Terrell might be the perfect choice.

Last time I checked, LA isn't a red city run by conservatives.

You are aware of the ratings history of KTLK, which is now known as KEIB, yes? We are trying to *increase* the ratings here, not add weight to the sinking ship. I am looking for positive suggestions!

You are aware of Don Quixote? Cumulus got the value out of KABC by selling the land. Now all they need to do is keep it on the air.

And BTW even Rush Limbaugh couldn't help KEIB, although yes it's doing better than KABC.

KABC's problem is mostly signal. No matter what they put on, most of the usable coverage is in highly ethnic areas where that kind of talk radio has few users.

The signal has not been competitive since the decade of the 80's when noise levels on AM began rapidly increasing due to new technology and the population in the dwindling coverage area changed to their disadvantage.

All this, and the fact that the majority of their listeners who were over 50 years old have slowly died off over the years and have not been replaced.

I wouldn't say the signal is that terrible. KABC increased power slightly when they changed transmitter locations, and the new site is not that far from the old one. Where I live in San Diego, KABC is about the same signal strength as 50kw 710 KSPN, and definitely stronger than other 50kw L.A. stations like 830, 740, 1110, 1150, 1540 and 1580.

The increase in power was to compensate for the lower efficiency of the KWKW towers at 790. The towers are electrically very short for that dial position, and are thus less efficient.

KSPN, despite being farther north in the San Fernando Valley, shoots its day power to the south and southwest, right towards San Diego; while it is non-directional daytime, the ground conductivity functions as a directional system. .

830, 740, 1110, 1150, 1540 and 1580 are all directional and send much less power towards the south than KABC in the daytime.

The ITU establishes 15 mV/m as the minimum useful signal strength in dense metros, and KABC only covers a third of the market population with that signal strength.

Mr Mcintyre must have come out of retirement lol. For the kabc website still says under shows Mcintyre in the Mornin 5 till 10. Wtf how unprofessional. No wonder they are such a #FAILURE

Wonder how long it will take this lineup to fail??? #notlong
Havent they gotten the memo jillian sucks. I wish her well but 1 of the worst people ever for talk radio.

Cumulus has the patience of a saint for the titanic of talk radio.

Why is cumulus avoiding the inevitable which is the eventual flip of 790 kabc the disaster of talk radio?

Has anyone that use to listen to doug listen to the new morning show and lineup? I have not they kept jillian. She is horrible for talk radio. I said bye bye to kabc after doug signed off havent listened to it since. It is absolute garbage. They added some stupid story thing at night. Failure failure failure is what they r n always will be.

The real question is not about why they are doing programming that you... or anyone else... does not enjoy. That is normal and part of the fragmented audiences in radio in the last 50 or 60 years. We don't have to like everything on the radio as there are dozens of choices in every larger market. And there are even more choices via streaming and podcasts.

The question is "why?" As in "why does KABC keep trying to do a format that mostly appeals to older non-Hispanic white guys in a market that is 75% ethnic and immigrant and in a coverage area that has even fewer old white guys.

It's been suggested that WW1 needs the clearances in LA, but then why do they even try to do local shows?

Looking at Cumulus' AM roster, it is almost as if there is nobody at the higher levels of management that understands today's AM radio environment and the newer factors that affect listenability and coverage.

You know what their CEO did before she ran Cumulus? That's your answer.
