Downward Spiral for KKCM ?

End of year budget cuts came early at Cox Radio Tulsa KKCM/Tulsa (Spirit 102.3) as APD. Dale Christopher's position has been eliminated. Dale will continue to produce Sunday Morning Worship with Andy Chrisman. Dale joined KKCM in April 2003...

How would that cause a spiral? I don't understand...... ???

They probably mean coupled with the cut earlier this summer of the sales manager. However in a Cox sized company these "corrections" happen all the time. The new morning guy is probably absorbing the APD duties and they will continue on.

IMHO, Mix ought to change format before Spirit.

Dear Arm Chair Quarterbacks,

The APD leaving a station does not signal a downward spiral. I think a morning show or PD position is more important. As much as we would like to think that the APD leaving is the end of Spirit, we know it is not true.

My personal assumption is that the former employee posted this information or leaked it to someone to post. The person that started the post should feel proud to have started such a dumb thread. That person should consider seeing a shrink and getting on meds. They obviously do not understand our business.

The fact is that KKCM and KXOJ have proven that they can both survive well in the market. If you combine the two stations, you have anywhere from a 7 to a 10 share. That is not bad. This has turned out to be a good (and fair) battle.

For once, KXOJDJ/KXOJBOB makes sense.

Quick question: Where is KXOJ getting all of the cash to buy stations? Are they all Christian stations? Are you guys joining the secular radio club? Does that make the rest of us less evil in your eyes? There is no secret meeting where Clearchannel, Cox, Shamrock, Renda and Journal hold satanic meetings. No goat slayings and no pentagrams made from candles.

It is all good now.

I think K-Hits fired the janitor, could a format change be coming? :)

Blowing out the Sales manager and APD b/c of budget cuts could signal a problem... When your staff consists of just a few people and "budget cuts" start coming around that usually signals the beginning of the end... Isn't that what happened over at the Kross OJdj? And thanks for the reminder on my meds. I'll head over to your house to pick them up

Agreed, I don't think this signals a downward spiral. It's a little confusing to me, I don't understand why a station on the way up in the ratings needs less staff, but they've been trying to keep that staff down to absolute bare bones since the beginning.

JournalGuy: The Stephens' purchasing secular stations back east hardly "gets" them into the secular radio club. Remember, they've owned 97.1 for years, first as a secular country station and now as sports talk. AM 1550 used to simulcast 100.9 and is now sports talk as well. They've done a mix of formats for years.

P.S. - Just because YOU haven't been invited to our super-secret satanic slayings doesn't mean we're not holding them. 8)

Is it just me or is this whole post ironic...coming from somebody who is too scared to reveal their true idenity. Then to accuse the former Spirit employee of posting this thread & suggest he needs to see a shrink. Pot - meet Kettle!!!! ;D

Hey, this is GREAT. Really intelligent and relevant banter, here!

While we're at it, let's throw in some other fallen evangelists that have nothing to do with the topic of radio!

Oh, and I've got a great recipe for Tuna Creme' while we're at it.

???

Can we get back on something having to do with radio?

Amen, KountryBill. I've been amazed how quick people are to throw religious leaders under the bus. If you don't like 'em, don't watch 'em! If nobody was supporting them, they'd go away... somebody is supporting them, so for them, it obviously "works." Leave 'em alone. Furthermore, who ever said Spirit or KXOJ supported the Roberts? I never heard either way.

As to getting this back on track to radio: I hear third-hand there were others let go from the company, not specifically Spirit but Cox Tulsa in general. I just don't get this. They didn't have a particularly "meaty" staff to start out with; how can they afford to keep cutting back and cutting back? And if it's budget cuts as claimed, who's handling the money over there? With the exception of Mix, it looks like all the stations should be raking in the cash.

Are they trying to turn Cox Tulsa into another Clear Channel? Beautiful studios but nobody's home?

Are they planning to sell the stations and get out of the Tulsa market? Nobody has suggested that, but I just can't make sense of what I'm seeing over there. I've always been taught you spend money to make money...

It's company wide. I've seen several higher positioned exits from the company in the last two weeks. Most recently, Cox just blew out the consultant for all of their 80's stations. They eliminated his position. I wonder if that means the 80's thing is going bye bye in most markets. He was also the PD of WPOI in Tampa. They're slimming down elsewhere in the company too by not replacing people when they quit.

They're streamlining for some reason. Who knows? We're not on the inside, so we'll probably never understand exactly why. I have heard from people on the inside who admit to being worried about their jobs these days, though. That type of employee fear seems out of character for Cox, traditionally. Sad to see the tide turning like that. I don't think I ever heard talk like that from Cox employees until recently. Cox has done a great job of shoring up employee confidence most times. This all seems strange and really out of character for them.

Now it's time to hear from Journalguy as to why he thinks this is actually happening. He seems to know more about Cox than the rest of us for some reason. ;)

I think you guys missed my point. First, its a joke. I'm sure there's several of us in here that are quite tired of hearing about the God-channels and the stuff that goes with it. For the past couple of months it seems like it's been either the God-channels or KOOL for the most part. Judging by the ratings I'd say they represent a pretty small portion of the actual market so why this board harps on them is beyond me. Secondly, Roberts was in the news lately and the relevance to the God-Channels is that he AND most commercial god-channels are strickly interested in the mighty dollar. Many hide behind the mask of "doing the right thing" but for the most part it's all about the $$$. Let the hatemail begin.

Hate, hate, hate... ;D

It may be a joke, but it's a sore point for those of us who have grown up in the faith and know the sharks are a tiny minority of the "faithful." It's an annoying stereotype that doesn't fit most believers.

If you're tired of hearing about the "God-Channels," #1 don't read these threads (KKCM or KXOJ would be your first clue you aren't interested in the thread) and #2 post about something else. Do you know anything interesting going on at KMOD, K95, or KVOO? I don't, and I'm even less connected to the O.K.C. market.

Spirit is related to the bigger stations in that they are being a cash cow for a secular company that seems to be cutting its staff at the same time. KXOJ, I'm mostly not interested in, although them buying outside of this area was mildly interesting.

While I'm no fan of Roberts, I'm not convinced he doesn't believe what he's saying. He's not selling "healing cloths," and the charges haven't been proven (although yes, it looks bad).

Years ago I worked at KXOJ and yes I have problems with some of the things they did and said but I have NO doubt that they and those who work for them for the most part are doing it because they really DO believe it is the right thing. 97.1, 1550, and the stations back east -- sure, they're strictly for the income. But if KXOJ was in it for the money, why would they have stayed CCM for the decade when Love 98 was kicking their tail up one side of the dial and down the other? Why would they have stuck with The Kross for so long?

Either the Stephens are stupid business people (which can't be right for them to be at this for 25 years) or they really believe in the mission of KXOJ.

I was honored that my name came up. NightAire is right on. Seems that since the CCM stations cannot be mean to each other on the air, they battle on the net. It is simple, they are both in it to make money. If it doesn't make money, they would change formats. Neither is a non-comm, so it is about the money. Sorry both stations, but that is reality. There is more tension between those two stations which seems crazy. The KHTT and KTBT battle would be more fun to talk about.

As for any inside on Cox, you tell me. It seems that they are doing what any industry does. They are making decisions to fine-tune their workforce. Every other group has either been there or they are making plans to tighten the ship. AGAIN, it is not just radio. The only rumor that I have heard is that the family is looking to take it private. It would make sense to make it look great on paper before the board votes to buy it back. I think Clearchannel will be a better company once it goes private. Radio will be better once the stockholders do not get to vote.

Do what is right for the customer (listener) and give them a good product. There is a lot of great talent in this market, use it to radio's advantage. Make yourself valuable to your station, boss, listeners and advertisers. If not, someone else will.
