Dr. Dean Edell...

His show is supposed to run Sat. afternoon 1-4p and then repeat Sun. morning 6-8. What will KGO plug into these slots now?

Or was he asked to leave?

OK, Dean works for Premiere (Clear Channel) NOT KGO or Citadel. Dean is also 69 years old. Dr. Dean has been on KGO forever.
When Premiere BOUGHT the show, they pulled it out of the KGO's Studios and Dean worked for the past 6 years or so from his home. It was assembled and distributed out of LA. His producer/Heather worked out of her home too.

It will effect more than just KGO, although KGO was one of only a few stations that carried him live, many of affiliates time shifted him, because he ran into PM Drive on many stations on the east coast and Mid west when he ran live.

Dean was/is going to run Saturday 1p-4p and Sunday 6a-8a on KGO. That will continue till the end of the year.
(Hey, maybe Seacrest will replace him on Premiere...His $60mil deal should cover that!)

We learned of the retirement yesterday.

BTW, he is a great guy with a terrific sense of humor.

He referred to being "very sad and upset" at what is happening at Citadel and KGO. What is happening at KGO? I live outside the Bay Area, but very curious to hear what he's referring to.

KGO's GM, Mickey Luckoff, resigned under far from favorable circumstances. Although Dean's been at his post for a long time--certainly long enough to make a retirement a completely legitimate move--I think there's little doubt that his decision came largely in response to the changes at the station, which are discussed here:

Well, you figure that the move to KGO weekends will basically kill Dr. Dean's caller base. Does ANY station anywhere run him live, other than KGO?

The KGO move probably shone the flashlight upon the handwriting on the wall, and prompted him to retire a little earlier than he wanted.

I don't know...retiring at age 69 sounds pretty good to me! I bet he has lots of non-radio options (writing, blogging, books, etc) that will occupy his time. And he still has an audience who is interested in what he has to say.

As for KGO, they're faced with the same problem as all the other AMs: Aging audience. It's time for radio to bring in the next generation. They already missed the last two.

From the Examiner...

KGO Radio's General Manager, Deidra Lieberman issued the following statement over Dr. Dean Edell's retirement late Wednesday afternoon:

“Dean has been on the air with us for 35 years and has definitely earned this retirement. While we are sad to lose him as a member of the KGO Newstalk 810 line-up, we are thrilled for Dean and his family. We have lots of terrific options as we begin the job of reworking the KGO line-up and will be making an announcement soon.”

From Dr. Dean's page on Premiere's website:

Please note that we are launching a new PPM-friendly program clock for Dr. Dean Edell on Monday, December 6, 2010. Click here to see it.

Very, very few, and only in really small markets. Click here for lists of affiliates by state. You'll have to convert local time to Eastern, Pacific, UTC, or whatever, and there's no link to individual station sites to see if, for example, they stream. The parent HealthCentral.com website also streams the show, somewhere.

What time is Dean on, I don't pay to much attention to KGO.
His live show is 1-2pm PT, but under the proposal, the show would no longer be live, but only carried as multi-hour blocks on weekends, as it has been for the vast majority of his outlying affiliates.

His show would fit in quite well with Sirius/XM on the medical advice channel they have.

He is carried on XM, on the 2 channels that Clear Channel programs, but neither carry him live, One carries his show at 5pm eastern and the other later in the evening at around 8 or 9

San Francisco is by far his largest market, the only other California stations that clear him live is KGOE 1480 Eureka, and KNCO 830 Grass Valley

And nicely intertwined in her statement was "...as we begin the job of reworking the KGO line-up...".

Oh well, it was good while it lasted. I suppose change is needed, as long as it is change for the better. I hope the decisions are made by an experienced radio person and not some bean counter.
