Drew Carey

Since Power of 10 was never on the fall schedule, and would only come back as a fill-in when something tanks (cough-Viva Laughlin-cough), it seems far more likely the October premiere was simply because ramping up for the new season took longer with the changes this season. For cross promotional purposes, there could have been advantages to having Power still on the air when Price debuted, but rushing Price just to take advantage of that would have been counterproductive.

If CBS has a bad fall, Power could be back by mid-October. Kid Nation might be generating some controversy, but so did Anchorwoman. It could suffer a similar early demise (though I never underestimate the public's taste for non-real reality TV). Viva Laughlin could rival Cavemen for an early exit.

I have to say, that will be a VERY sad day. It may be one of the saddest days ever. I heard that not only this, but they're sweetening some of the theme music, they're getting a new set. AND Drew will not use the tall, thin wired microphone that Bob always used. It's a wireless, and I think it even has a flag with the show's logo on it. I saw it somewhere. And if more people are as disappointed as me, it will probably be the final season of daytime game shows.

Not only have the sets changed, but the audience seating has changed as well. Looks like instead of seating at least 1000, it looks like from the chairs in the audience it would only seat 500 at best.

Also, getting back to Drew, I have heard that he has yet to learn all of the games of The Price Is Right. What do you think that means?

Personally, I thought Drew might have stood a chance, but now I may have regrets about Drew hosting The Price Is Right. I think that October 12th will be a sad day for many like me who enjoyed Bob Barker as host. Hopefully, CBS that day will reair the last episode with Bob as host. That would be a well and fitting tribute to Bob.

A new set and updated music is a good touch. The worst thing that could happen is for them to try to plop any new host into the exact same setting is a bigger recipe for disaster than setting the tone that it's time to accept that Bob has retired.

As for the microphone...dear Lord, what is the obsession with that thing? It's a micropohone. I've watched Price off and on nearly my entire life....it's just a microphone. Wired, wireless, thin, thick, it doesn't matter.

Don't take it personally, but there is nothing wrong with these updates.
Would you say the same thing about Wheel of Fortune? What about the fact that Vanna doesn't even turn the letters anymore? What about the change in Music? How about the full screen backdrop sets that are different every show? Hasn't changed the game, and it still does well.

How about Family Feud? What about Jeopardy! ? The Alex Trebek version is vastly different from the orignal run and yet is more successful.
Drew Carey has experience hosting a show, he did fine with "Who's Line" and "Power of Ten." He'll do fine with TPIR, which is an institution, like the Tonight Show, like SNL. It's not going anywhere, and Drew is the right choice.

Really, type of microphone? Who cares?

You've also got to wonder how many people nearly (or have) tripped on that microphone cord over the years. Maybe insurance rates for the show will go down a few grand ;).

Was Bob Barker's microphone similar to the one Gene Rayburn used on Match Game? I know that there's a big deal made over it by hardcore MG fans.

It looked to be similar (I'm sure there are some overly devoted types who can identify that they had different windscreens or something like that). I loved Match Game, but the same thing applies there...a microphone is a microphone.

I found a picture of the new design on the doors for Price--I fail to see what the big deal is. After years of making the set look like a kid's birthday party run amok, with baloons and stars all over the place, this design kind of gives it a retro feel without the in-your-face tackiness. Frankly, I thought the 1994 nighttime version had the classiest design, but it seems to be heresy in some circles to say anything positive about that version.

If you're in the worship-at-the-altar-of-Bob camp, it doesn't matter when he retired, or who replaced him--the new guy is damned for what he does ("He's trying to imitate Bob!!!!") and damned for what he doesn't ("He isn't saying it like Bob said it!!!!"). Some people felt that way about Carson (and countless other legends over the years), and that's fine. Leno isn't everyone's cup of tea, nor will Drew please everyone. But Bob, great as he is, and Johnny, great as he was as well, didn't please everyone either. They had to take over for people, too, and make their respective shows their own (granted, Bob had an advantage of the show being off the air for several years, but I would bet there were plenty of Cullen fanatics who said that young whippersnapper was part of the destruction of their beloved pricing game).

Me---I think the format is what makes the game great. Yes, there are better choices than others to try to make it work, but I don't believe anyone, no matter how talented, is that irreplacable. If the new Price tanks, it probably means the show was living on Bob fanatics, and the format had died a while ago. If Bob had retired at 40 years on TV, we'd have the hour-long Bold & the Beautiful filling that slot on the schedule by now. I still believe the format has some juice left, and having seen Drew on Power of 10, Whose Line, etc., he seems like a fine choice to try to keep it going.

I've never been a major fan of The Price is Right, but I'd like to see it continue, if for nothing else but to keep the time from being taken over by more soaps, trash talk, or infomercials.

I've also liked Drew Carey in Whose Line and he is doing well on Power of 10. I think he'll do well on TPIR, and I hope the bunch that wants to see him fail will have to eat their words later. :p 8)

Speaking of game shows. Most people have forgotten. That Wheel Of Fortune debuted in 1975 with Chuck Woolery
& Susan Stafford. Its never been always Pat & Vanna. Same applies for Jeopardy. History tends too get lost within the corporate structure. Sad.....

Carey will do just fine. Hes got a wide variety of fans from college kids watching reruns of both his long running ABC shows, to old ladies who think he looks like their son. Or an economy size Bill Cullen.

All the guy has to do is be himself.

Of course, this must be considered fair warning to "Barkers----" I mean "Careys Cuties"....

um....I'm thinking April Fools Day, the actress that portrayed Mimi will somehow end up one of "Carys Cuties"..

room for cameos from Ferguson, Mochrie and Styles?

Just PLEASE don't put any of them in bikinis!!!

Drew was just on Leno (quite ironic) and mentioned that the Barker's Bargain Bar pricing game is keeping that name. I know at least a couple people (not on this board) that speculated that name could change.

So far six episodes have been taped with Drew, and in one of them Drew says that a woman wet her pants when she found out she was going to play Plinko. Of course Drew was also showing everyone his injury from the turntable when rehearsing for Grocery Game. Guess he needs psychological counselling before going near that turntable again. ;)

Hey, I miss the part when the winners on Wheel used to bid on prizes, or put it in their "account". I stopped watching since they stopped doing that! ::)

Yeah, good point. Drew's a great guy who gets along very well with audience participation. He'll do just fine. It'll take a little while to adjust to it, but we will.

Drew will do just fine. OK, I'll talk microphones. When Dennis James did the syndicated nighttime version which IIRC premiered the same year as Barker's he used a thick mic. He even used it filling in for Bob a few times.

The music? C'mon it's been the same since 1972! Yes, even Jeopardy was different with Art Fleming. Diffeent theme song (the familiar Jeopardy theme we know today was only used as the contestants wrote their answers for Final Jeopardy. And where's Don Pardo!

The only thing I will say about the microphone is that a wired one can be more reliable than a wireless one, especially when moving around the stage as Bob has always done, and Drew obviously will also.
