Drew Carey

In tonights TPIR Million Dollar Spectacular. Someone actually won a million dollars at the end of the showcase.
In the big picture Bob has/had more winners. But in the short-term. Drew is having more prizes won as well.

Well, a 35 year head start will do that....

Interesting that the first time they changed the way someone could win a million--making it harder--it happened.

First episode of Power of 10: million dollar winner. First time he hosts a prime time Price is Right: million dollar winner. He's a good luck charm.

I wouldn't necessarily say they made it harder - they're just rewarding skill now instead of just really good luck. IMHO, it's better this way.

There were also quite a few big wins on the daytime show earlier this season. Maybe the contestant coordinators are doing a better job? There don't seem to be as many obnoxious contestants who have no idea how to play the games this season.

Drew's coming along nicely, too.

Interestingly they recently repealed the rule about contestants not being allowed to be on the show twice, though I don't know the amount of repeat contestants who have re-appeared. I only recall seeing one at this moment, as she told Drew she was first on TPIR in 1983.

And all the Drew haters are either lifelong fans of Bob Barker, or can't come up with another argument besides "HE'S FAT...HE'S NOT FUNNY...HIS VOICE DOESN'T CARRY, ETC."

I watched that Million Dollar show tonite...first time I've seen a full Drew episode of TPIR.

That million dollar double showcase winner had to be one of the most annoying people Ive ever seen...and looked to be very staged to me. I would be embarrassed to be one of his pupils.

Concerning Drew, he looked fairly comfortable hosting the show...much more comfortable than in his first week of shows aired. But he has a long way to go.

I quickly grew tired of all the handshaking, all the "anyone you wanna say hello to"'s at the Big Wheel, the "how ya doin" to every contestant as they came on down.

Patience, everyone.

None of the five most popular game shows currently airing on daytime TV has its original host.

Consider how long it took:

1. For Pat Sajak and Vanna White to win over "Wheel of Fortune" fans after replacing Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford?
2. For Alex Trebek to win over "Jeopardy!" fans who remember Art Fleming?
3. For Meredith Vieira to win over "Millionaire" fans after the Regis experience?
4. For John O'Herlihy to win over "Family Feud" fans after Richard Dawson, Ray Combs, Louis Anderson and Richard Karn?

And keep in mind...Bob Barker is not the original host of "The Price Is Right." That was Bill Cullen. When Barker began hosting in 1972, the show had "New" as part of its name. And Dennis James hosted a nighttime version in syndication during the 70s.

I anticipate that once Drew gets himself acclamated with the game-show hosting, CBS will ask him to head the writing staff of "As The World Turns." The fans are about to stage a mutiny. ;D

I just went to Golden-Road.net and read reviews of the Million Dollar show. While Adam wasnt a plant, he was given plenty of instruction from audience members, many of whom are rabid TPIR fans and know the show (especially prices of prizes) inside and out.

Here's the link:

Fourth entry on the post is from a guy in the audience (show was taped on Feb 11th).

Why in the world would anyone in their right mind want to watch a game show?
for the same reason they'd post a response to a topic they're obviously not interested in.
feeling rather superior, are we?

"420, Bob"

When I wa young, it wa a form of entertainment for most older children as well as adults. We didn't have Nintendo Wii and the internet to soak up all of our time. I remember when "The New Price Is Right" and "Match Game 7x" first started. I was 10 years old and an avid watcher. It certainly beat the soaps!

...And also courtroom and trash talk shows in the daytime or reality shows at night. I'd also say that I like watching game shows better than most sitcoms or dramas that are currently in prime time.

I agree it's better this way now, just noting that there was a 1 in 20 shot with the bonus spin method, while the plausible range for a showcase bid on one of the nighttime shows, even factoring in the $1000 range, is probably more like 1 in 30 to 1 in 40.

Overall, I think Drew is doing a stellar job with the show all things considered (being so new to hosting game shows and to the show itself). I admire Bob Barker for all he did hosting the show. By being his own person and not trying to clone Bob, Drew is proving the show itself (which includes the contestants) is the star, not the emcee.

That point is absolutely right; Drew isn't trying to be Bob and it's one key to his success so far.

I believe the other is a quality that he actually shares with Bob. They are each an "everyman" instead of a "star." Each has always portrayed himself on-camera [and off-camera, from most of the stories I've heard] as an affable, approachable person. Both really enjoy -- and excel at -- the "people" aspect of the show and genuinely seem to want the contestants to win. One never gets the impression that, if you ran into Bob on a golf course or Drew at a blackjack table, either would ever be anything but the friendly, easy-going guy you see on the air.

I hope Drew has as long and successful run as Bob.

Oh yeah, he's not copying Bob...except at the very end after the showcase showdown......"Have your pets spayed or Neutered". No ownder TPIR is dead last in the ratings among cats and dogs.

Very big with parakeets and guinea pigs, though. ;)

Happy Gilmore might disagree with you there.
