Duncan and Mel

Can anyone with access to the numbers tell us how well Duncan and Mel do in their daypart? Obviously they couldn't hack it in the morning, but how are their numbers historically in PM Drive?

I'm curious because their voices really annoy me. I don't mean to bash anyone, but I really can't listen to them long because the vocal quality puts me off. Wondering if it's just me?

I was gong to say the same thing a couple of weeks ago when Star 94.1 went on the air. At best their show is amateurish and something which you might hear in a small radio market. It sounds like that this team is a pair who has weaseled themselves by default and moved around whenever the station has a spot they need to fill.

While I know many voicetrack, I find it very annoying when they do the "replay" of their celebrity news, which is only what, 3 minutes long? And was aired an hour before? And they announce that it is a replay? That's lame.

In my opinion they do not meet the NEW STANDARDS set by Jeff&Jer. The mornings are in place....the music is tweaked...afternoon drive is weak.

Duncan is the PD and he used to work with Mel in Vegas, and brought her here. You do the math. Yes, they are horrible on the air, and it's only exagerrated against the backdrop of Jeff & Jer...But at least we don't have to hear Duncan say MY 80's, MY 90's, MY music, that was MY Madonna, next we'll check MY traffic and MY weather.

MY God!

Granted, we're all a bunch of radio geeks and junkies here, but we're not stupid. Given the unanimous nature of the opinions voiced, seems it would be smart for D&M to be casting about for greener pastures instead of just waiting for the axe to fall. Bob Bollinger isn't the type to tolerate mediocrity.

Consider: The station now has one of the city's two premiere morning teams. The music is on-target and the format unopposed. They've just pulled a marketing coup with a branding change that I'll bet dollars to donuts was NOT the PD's idea. Cindy Spicer does a good job in middays. And then... well, one of these things is not like the other ones.

Duncan's voice doesn't bother me all that much, but Mel's voice is the single most annoying thing I've ever heard on radio. It's shrill, nasal and loud.

I believe Mel is the Assistant PD / MD

I take it you are not familiar with the Planet?

There have been some very lame PD's and MD's who've held onto jobs there much, much longer than they should.

Nepotism like that should never be tolerated.

It's just like KUSI-TV morning show personality Rod Luck. His wife is the Human Resources Director at KUSI and so his job is safe....no matter how incredibly extremely annoying he is. What's worse is that he is such a mush mouth...like Duncan and Mel when they start falling over themselves.

Overall 94.1 sounds good, but their afternoon drive amateur hour is horrific and basically unlistenable.

I understand that the Queen of Payola remains employed at his current group of stations as well.

Yes, yes [dismissive wave].

Sometimes, corporate doesn't let you do everything you want to do. Bob is a good radio man. He stives for quality in every aspect of his operations. I respect him greatly, as do most folks who've worked for him.

Bob is indeed a very nice guy - I worked at the Planet for 3 years and they treated me right. But, the Planet/KYXY building is a pretty dull, staid, uninnovative place where you can get away for years with having a multi-million dollar radio station - the Planet - that pulls a 2.x 12+ in the ratings. It always frustrated me to watch the continuing succession of stupid things done to keep the Planet down: poorly-conceived ad campaigns, music directors who were totally removed from the target audience, PD's who seemingly did nothing more than type up the weekend jock schedule, etc. (keeping Benny Ricardo on the air for way too many years :) It always seemed like a place in need of someone to take charge. KYXY, meanwhile, runs on auto-pilot and gosh knows why they even have a PD: that's gotta be the easiest gig in town. But yeah, Bob's a nice guy.

Infinity San Diego is an interesting place.

Well, that's KyXy!

They've got a very unique operation there. Every time I go into that building, it's like stepping into a time warp back to 1982! I don't know what it is that makes Infinity's San Diego operations so infinitely (ahem) laid back, but there it is.

Even given that your analysis is spot-on accurate Bob, you have to ask the question (from Bollinger's viewpoint): why mess with a good thing? If it runs itself, if it makes dough hand-over-fist, if it needs a minimum of effort to keep rolling, why screw with it?

True: if it ain't broke don't break it, but it would have been nice to see the Planet take off and at least try for a 3.0 in 12+ :)

By the way, I just got an email from a Planet jock chastising me for my observations. They accused me of being bitter about having been let go six years ago or so, which is not at all the case: I thought the PD was a d***k (dork, duck, dink????), but I was not upset about leaving there. I had done my 30 years on air and was ready to sleep in.

Why?

Bob, why would anyone other than the radio fans on this board care how a station does in 12+?<P ID="signature">______________

I describe the show as worse than 2 high school students playing around in the production room.

Re: Why?

Bob, do you want to handle that or do I have to
school this guy?

Be gentle :)

I assume the question is aimed at the premise that you can have a lousy 12+ rating but still be considered a success because you are, for example, #1 in 39-44 left-handed men from 10AM to 2PM. Yeah you can make some money doing that kind of narrowcasting (and we all presume the Planet does), but it kind of makes you wonder that a station which has HOWARD STERN, the king of radio, can't outdraw even one of the two country stations in San Diego.
