Dusty's Christmas Thing

Since no one has said anything yet, is Dusty's Christmas presentation being aired again this year in Cincinatti? Is it on Oldies 1160, or on one of the more powerful stations?

Later....
Matt Smith
WGSR-TV

it should be aired 12 midnight to 5a. This show should never see the light of day...have you heard this stuff?

Cincinatti? COME ON! (Sidebar --> Why is this board OBSESSED with the Adult Standards format? Isn't anyone on this board under 50??? Future of radio not past FUTURE!!)

What is wrong with Dusty's Christmas show? Especially today, Christmas Eve. The future of radio? Mostly voice-tracked announcers working for a company such as Clear Channel, and not doing anything creative. Perhaps radio will cease to be a factor in most peoples' lives, cnsidering the number of IPODS and MP3 players.

Yes, I've listened to Dusty's Christmas Spectacular for years, and it's a Christmas tradition in my home. He plays the best Christmas music, without any Kenny G or Manheim Steamroller.

I love when he reads the Christmas story from Luke, it's an amazing experience.

Dusty is a legend. Hearing Dusty at Christmas is like seeing that Yule Log burning on television for hours....and the original WNEW-TV version is 40 years old this year. Don't poo-poo tradition. God will getcha.

Dusty still ROCKS! He and his crew at 'DJO is practically all that is left of what was personality radio. Gene "By Golly" Barry,John Hall,Bob Holliday, Ricky Smith and Lou Emm are gone. Kirkie is retired and Kim Faris has also left the building.(sigh!)

Clear Channel will get theirs someday...just like Enron's crooks did...what goes around comes around!

Amen. Don't mess with Texas or Xmas. Dusty is the king of Christmas.

It is good to live in a town where Dusty's name is on the gas pumps. It reassures me.

And, there's more to broadcasting than simply "the future" of radio.

CHR and other young-oriented formats are a part of the business, not
the whole business!

If the "future of radio" started paying attention to those who are part of its past, maybe they wouldn't make so many boneheaded mistakes. Those who do not study history are condemned to repeat it. I can't tell you how many times I hear baby DJ egoheads do really dumb things that have been proven time and again to alienate their audiences without even realizing they are doing it.

Of course, who in heck is teaching them? The brains of the business have gone away, leaving only the political hacks who are trying to save their phony baloney jobs. ("I didn't get a harrumph outa you. You watch yer ass.") Unless you're a haberdasher, it's hard to learn from an empty suit.

Dusty's Christmas show has not been a major player in this market in 5 years. With MIX and WARM playing all Christmas music since the day after Thanksgiving (and in crystal clear FM Stereo), why would anyone listen to holiday music on AM? One of the stations was even commercial free on Christmas. The biggest impact Dusty made with his show is the few hours he was heard on WLW (the #1 station in town). Dusty's Christmas show hasn't been a major player in Cincinnati since 2001 when he was heard on WGRR.

Dusty's Christmas show is the best Christmas show that I have ever heard on the radio, over the many years of listening to the radio. Dusty's Christmas show has been heard on 89 WLS in Chicago, the #3 market in the United States. I wonder why so many stations sign up for show? I have heard many younger people comment to me that Dusty is an awesome jock. There is not a Top 40 or any modern music jock in Cincinnati that would try to compare themselves to Dusty, no way. Mark Sebastian was a very good Top 40 jock, yet, he is not in the same league with Dusty. As I have heard many of the younger jocks state, "They would listen to Dusty to see how the Master did it."

By the way, Dusty left 103.5 in Summer 2002. Compared to the Dusty Christmas Special, MIX and WARM playing Christmas music is one big and fat snore, BORING! If I want to take a nap, I will tune to MIX or WARM Christmas music and no personality or fun.

The real problem is, listening to Mix 94 or WRRM even after the holidays will STILL put people to sleep. It doesn't make any difference to many of us if Dusty's Christmas Special is a major player anymore. Not everyone is "in the business" or younger than 25 anymore. I don't think it's even about the ratings. I think the guy likes doing it, has had a listener base for years and years, and many folks still like hearing it. Besides, Happy New Year everyone.

Dusty's Christmas Thing was on XM

XM ran the entire show along with numerous terrestrial stations throughout the country. CC made it available to all their stations via their wan.

Not bad for a show from a station that is not "A MAJOR PLAYER" don't cha' think?

By the way, Dusty left 103.5 in Summer 2002.

Which means his last Christmas show aired in 2001. Am I correct?

Both NDXU Fan and FRR, I agree with you. Dusty does a good job on his Christmas show and kudos to the man for being able to syndicate the show the past couple of years and even get it on XM this past holiday season but let's face facts here. Forty-five years of tradition won't get the average listener to seek out this show. Radio geeks will find Dusty on a 10kw daytimer out of Aberdeen but not Regular Joe. And if they do find the show on WDJO...

1) They won't stick with it because of the inferior sound quality...
2) At night, they'll be fiddling with the radio dial wondering what happened to the station because reception isn't as good.

Too much work for the average listener...

Until Dusty can get the station on an FM signal in town, he'll be "small potatoes" compared to MIX and WARM.
