DX Season Beginning on Arctic SDR

It depends on the owner of the SDR, and in some cases even Internet service.
These relatively expensive SDRs are provided for free to us without any payment to the operators, and they incur power and internet service costs as well as requiring periodic maintenance. For that reason, I don't get too annoyed if an operator chooses not to provide the service, either temporarily or permanently.

Yes, that's very true and I agree 100%. For us that enjoy tuning the various SDR's that are available to us at no cost, we should be very grateful to the operators that provide them to general public.

A few of them have donation links, and why not kick in a couple of bucks?

I have been in contact with the owner of the Arctic SDR concerning the lack of reception of North American signals on the SDR receiver recently. Initially he told me that the MegaDipol has a null to the NW in order to reduce noise from a nearby wind park. This results in favorable reception from N-NE and SW-W.

I just received another note from him informing me that just few days ago he has made some adjustments that should improve the reception of South American, eastern North American and South Asia/Australia signals.

Spent about 30 minutes on the Arctic SDR last night between 8:15 - 8:45 pm CST. Much improved North American reception. Not sure if it was due to fine tuned antenna or just better propagation. Some stations heard included 1040 WHO, 1500 WLQV and KSTP, 1510 KPLS, 1630 KCJJ. Also had 3 stations fading in and out on 1390.

Definitely encouraging news. Perhaps this SDR is back 'in business' for the winter. I'll have to take a listen later this week.

Glad to hear that. I'll be checking it out.

I was on the Arctic SDR earlier this evening around 9:30CST. Not very good, but a few rays of hope. I did hear a weak WBBR. I also heard classic rock on 1460 with an announcer with what sounded like a North American accent. It was mixing with what seemed to be an Arabic station. My guess is CJOY from Guelph, Ontario. That's just a guess, I couldn't ID it, but classic rock and10kw aimed north makes CJOY a "prime suspect".

Pretty much my experience. Not much from North America the few times I checked in but I'll keep trying. In the past when
conditions are good several stations from Alaska come in well. I wonder if the positioning of the antenna has changed that.

We had more solar wind this week. Seems like it never stops nowadays. And an M-class flare hit early this morning causing an SW blackout per SpaceWeather. I'd say it could be a while before KBRW shows up to the Norwegian Arctic.

Thanks for the info. CJOY (located about an hour east of Toronto) was a nice first-time catch for me. Assuming that's what I heard. I'm definitely familiar with CJOY. As posted previously, I used to stay in a hotel just across the road from their tower site.

But OTOH, WBBR was very weak and I was barely able to positively ID it. I also heard what might have been the Catholic NYC station on 1560 (ex-WQXR/WQEW). But I'm really unsure about that one. The signal was in and out (mostly out), and I couldn't ID it.

Finally, no trace of KBRW or anything else from North America on 680. I think that's significant because CJOB, CFTR, and WRKO are all posibilites. Along with, perhaps, KNBR.

I also heard nothing on 680. No Alaskans at all. Based on what Crainbebo said it might be awhile.

I heard a fairly strong signal on 680, but almost definitely not from North America Presumably bleedover from one of the blowtorches based in Spain. Just a guess, however.

Tonight I listened on the Arctic SDR and just about everything from North America was east coast. WBBR fair, CFRB over WINS, WBZ fair, WEEI pretty good, WWVA fair, WCBS pretty good, WEPN was good. Best signal was WWKB strong. Heard a station on 1160 but I don't think it was WYLL and it didn't match KSL. Don't know what that could be. I briefly heard a weak station on 680. Guessing CFTR or WRKO. Heard talk format on 1500, but it did not match WFED or KSTP.

The beeps are airport beacons from Russia. They are all over the MW band and can be heard on most of the European based SDR's.

Good opening to North America right now on the Arctic SDR. Logged quite a few new ones, including Greenland on 570 kHz.
