DXing In Hawaii

I can't speak for the other islands but on Oahu it's impossible as there is a strong 650 in Honolulu. My guess is it covers most of the Hawaiian Islands.
 
There is a 650 in Anchorage--KENI 50 kw.

I didn't notice that there isa 650 on Oahu. The Radio-Locator map shows that KRTR's coverage is on all islands except on the eastern tip of the biggest island. (Never been to Hawaii before).

Yes, it covers everything during the night hours. Both KRTR and KKNE share the same tower near Kunia, Oahu, and are both running reduced power, about 7 KW compared to the licensed 10kw. I am told that the combining gear is old and needs to be replaced, and Cox has not come up with the funds to fix it right yet. And their STA for running at reduced power ran out last May.
So, despite the lower power, they do very well, and eclipse any chance of WSM or Alaska from being heard.
 
Don, I stand to be corrected, but wasn't the shared tower originally built for 940. When I was living in Honolulu for a year of high school (McKinley) in the mid-60s, the 940 signal (as country music KAHU) was noticeably weaker in the city than 650 (as top-40 legend KORL). I forget exactly where the 650 stick was located, but I believe it was in the city. I know the studios were in a Waikiki, in a hotel near the International Marketplace (the hotel name escapes me).

As for the 650 signal, I spent a weekend on the big island Kona coat, where KORL came in like a local....even after about 160 miles (IIRC) over the saltwater path. I also remember it as being the strongest signal on the Oahu north shore.
 
Tonight KRTR lost their audio and they were running carrier only. That allowed me to hear KTNN & a clear KFI.
One more night here and then back home.

Yes, the Kunia stick was originally built for 940 khz, but it loads up surprisingly well at 650. Although Cris Caughill tells me it is tricky to keep it stable at full power. Hence the need for newer and bigger hardware to handle the combined power of both stations. And it is not surprising about 650 (and 940 for that matter) being strong around Haleiwa, as it is the closest tower to the north shore.
Back in 2005, I did field strength measurements for another client at South Point, and 650 khz was the best of the bunch down on that end of the Big Island. The water path to the south and southeast is really very good for most stations on Oahu.

Tonight on Oahu I heard the foreign language on 740 again. I was able to determine that it definitely isn't Spanish. Sounded more like French, but not sure that's it either. Couldn't understand anything that was being said. At the top of the hour they had 4 beep tones. Heard this at 8PM HST about 90 minutes after local sunset.
Anyone have any clue where this could be coming from?

Judging from the hour, the east is all that is open. Hard to believe, but you may have snagged R. Sociedade da Bahia in Brazil, all in Brazilian Portugese. There is nothing in Tahiti on that frequency, and while there is a 1 KW in central America, I have never heard it here. The four top of the hour beeps sound unique, and may lend a clue, but I don't have one.
 
I used to listen to a Brazilian station on my iPhone from time to time. There'd be a series of beep tones....at the top of the hour, IIRC....which would then be followed by a couple of seconds of a voice that sounded like it was coming over a phone line. Maybe that's some sort of Brazilian legal thing, and indeed you did snag Brazil.

Or....maybe I'm 100% off base! ;D

I guess we'll never know for sure. Wish I could've recorded what I heard and posted it to a website for someone to analyze the language.
Maybe Don will have the chance to hear it and tell us more as I'm heading back home.
 
Tonight I heard talk radio on 1116 between 10:30 & 11:00PM HST. Although I think it was English I couldn't receive it strong enough to confirm the language. What I do know for certain is that it was a talk format and phone calls were being taken.
Last year I heard Brisbane, Australia on this frequency, but it was 5AM HST. However, after checking the day night line I see where it is dark now in eastern Australia at this time.
Don, have you ever heard this station on 1116 in Kauai and am I right in thinking that it is possible for me to receive it on Oahu at 11PM HST?

Is there something else I was hearing from the Pacific on 1116 at that time? Any help from anyone with this is appreciated.

Well, it is a tough call, as I have only heard the hetrodynes from these stations on 1116 khz. The one in Brisbane is possible, I suppose, as it is listed as 17KW. Early in the morning, I have heard a Chinese language on that frequency, but most of the time it is just a mix of things coming in from Asia, all piled up on top of each other.
Like I was saying earlier, conditions change nightly, and many times across the night hours as well.

One thing I was able to decipher was several beep tones coming through at the top of the hour. Later on I checked the web stream of 4BC Brisbane and the top of the hour tones were a match.
That had to be it.
