"Dynamite", "Only Girl In the World" impacting AC chart

I know that AC is an evolving format, but I'm still surprised to see these two songs on the chart. Also, "DJ Got Us Falling In Love", "I Like It" and "Cooler Than Me" almost make the chart look CHR-lite. Here's the chart compiled by Mediabase.

^I think it's only a couple of stations though, and I'm guessing they're the CBS Fresh ACs - I think airplay on 2-3 stations is enough to crack the AC Top 40

Well, you have stations that aren't true AC like we think of (such as WWFS, WNIC, WCFS) and they play these heavily since they're more like Hot AC's, so it's enough to get them on there. Except for a few stations, you won't hear these on a regular AC.

All those songs are perfectly acceptable compared to the one which now appears to be crossing over to AC: "Firework". As if hearing "Hey Soul Sister" three times a day for a whole year straight wasn't bad enough, we are now treated to this vocal-cord-straining, off-key-singing abomination by Katy Perry. How a song which sounds like a rejected American Idol audition could've gotten this far is a mystery to me, but that's the current music and radio industry for you...

I am sick of Katy Perry crossing over to AC. Her songs are not impressive and I agree, she can't sing....sounds like she's straining. "California Gurls" was bad enough.

Still, "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love", "Cooler Than Me", etc. seem to be pushing the envelope. The only reason those are where they are is because of Hot AC stations reporting as AC. I can't see those on any major AC stations, even Lite FM. Wouldn't fly around here. Just depends on the station- some are aggressive with new music, some are more conservative. We HAVE seen some rhythmic songs like "I Gotta Feeling" or "Just Dance" that didn't go very high on the AC chart start getting airplay, but I just don't see the ones currently on there getting anywhere.

and you are content with "Only Girl In the World"? I think Rihanna sounds worse than Katy Perry in that song.

I don't like Rhianna either, she just hasn't had songs peak and get the AC airplay that Katy Perry has.

I think these are all good examples of the evolving nature of the AC format. Adult Contemporary is sounding more and more like Hot AC, and the lines are blurring.

It's only 15 stations out of 93 (that are playing Only Girl In The World) - AC stations just play so few currents that 15/93 stations is enough to make Top 20 on the AC chart

Doesn't seem like that's enough stations though to say "the lines are blurring" between AC and HAC

Agreed, and keep in mind that the most of the stations that are playing these songs are programmed more like H/AC (yes, I know there are some exceptions like LiteFM who is more aggressive than most)...they just report as AC. So those songs get more spins. WCFS, WWFS, WNIC, WIAD, etc.

Only Girl In The World is played on WLTW. To me this song doesn't belong on AC. At first when I heard Dynamite on AC I was like what the, now it seems alright. Its better for AC then Katy Perry CA Girls.

WLTW has hardly become a true representation of most AC's, IMO. They've really gotten in to some rhythmic stuff.

Its sister station KOST @ 103.5 is much better.

Your right on that, but would KOST still sound that way if KBIG wasn't a Hot AC/Adult Hits?

I'm not sure. WLTW is an exception to Clear Channel AC stations - most are rather conservative in sound. KOST sounds a lot more like most of their AC's than WLTW.

Clear's #3 AC, WLIT in Chicago, is also conservative and typical for an AC from them. To be honest, musically, I think WLIT and KOST are much better than WLTW. I know the station is extremely popular, but it seems a little overhyped sometimes.

Sure... maybe 15 out of 93 isn't a lot. But that number could increase to 40, 50, or more for this kind of rhythmic music on AC within the next few years. Who knows. What is still true is that AC is continually evolving as adults' musical tastes change.
