East Texas Spring Ratings

Spring ratings are over on Wednesday.

There has been a lot going on this time around...the biggest being the major changes at KOOI, and KYKX running a major smear campaign against KNUE.

Your thoughts?

Have to think KYKX's attack dog, back door tactics will work against them. People listen to the radio for what musical etertainment can be had after the endless commercials run, not to hear a bunch of cheap shot artists ragging on the competition. KYKX once courted the audience with good music and good talent. Now they have neither and their effort has sunk to an all time low.

If all this is Dru's big idea he really should just pack up and leave. If it's the product of Access 1 dim light bulbs in the front office, then the carpetbaggers themselves should ride out of town on the next U Haul.

Absolutely! Dru is to radio is like using a knife for a proctology exam. Bad grammar but you get the idea. Access keeps him because he is cheap, and taking cheapshots is what he is all about.I have known several friends who as a test, sent Dru pkgs, or mp3's, not looking for a gig( they have one) but to see what type of comment they would get. Most were ignored but others were " we will keep you in mind, but you are not what we are looking for presently". My friends work in large markets and have brought very good ratings to their markets. Dru doesn't want someone who knows what they are doing or more knowledgable as he. He Reminds me of a few with East Texas Broadcasting, fearful of someone actually talented and knowledgable and (Gosh!) creative. He qualifies as a GM in a large cluster. They have a common thread;lost without a compass.

MERCY, Ed. A painfully true simile if I ever heard one. Either your choice of words or "...like performing an appendectomy with a broken bottle." These are a bit gorey, but so are the tactics KYKX is using in its futile campaign to win listeners and influence advertisers.

The KYKX ox is in the ditch and he doesn't want to be pulled out until Dru and company go elsewhere and do other things--preferably not in radio.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if before the end of the year Access 1 finally decides to say the hell with it and move KKUS's format and jocks to 105.7 when they finally move their studios to Tyler. Which leads us to this:

1)Would you keep the KYKX call letters?
2)What format would you put on the 104.1 frequency?

Dump the call letters...they belong to a memory
of a great station so long ago.

That would be a very smart move The ranch is a great radio station. I use to listen all the time when they had 103.1. by all means keep the call leters KYKX would be a great radio station again.

KYKX, The Ranch, & KZEY (cont'd).

Absolutely, I would image it as "The Legendary KYKX (pronounced Kix 105)... your home for the Greatest Country Music Ever".

Urban AC. With the high African-American population, the success of "The Blaze" and the success of the Urban AC station in Shreveport, I think it is well past time that the Tyler-Longview area had an Urban AC. I'd be happy to program it... for a price.

Speaking of Urban AC's, is KZEY back on the air yet? I looked on the FCC's website to see if there was any info on it, and I couldn't find anything current.
______________

While retaining the call letters and attempting to revive the legacy is an option, it's not likely a wise move. Moving KYKX to Tyler takes it out of sight, out of mind--and would accommodate the better action of new call letters, new format, new everything--including dumping Dru.

You are correct--long ago was another era for the station and no amount of resuscitation will ever bring it back.

You got that right. KYKX has been dead for, what, 14 years. When Arbitron combined Tyler and Longview, the death knell began-a-ringing for the station that continued to embrace Longview rather than the whole region. Why keep the call letters? Even if they decide to continue with a country format, they should blow the whole thing up.

Sometimes when a house in shambles is torn down and a new one built a much better house results. But given the wrecking and building crew on the KYKX shambles, somehow it doesn't appear that any rescue OR improvement is possible under the KYKX moniker. They might try KEZY and play elevator music--a throw back to the 70s but preferable to the throw up of today the station is doing.

I understand that KZEY and KOFY are off the air while they relocate the studios to downtown Tyler. Word is they will return to the air shortly.

I concur. There is nothing salvagable at that station. EPA would have to be called in to remove the TOXINS,and retaining the call letters would only hamper the operation. You rebuild, structure wise, staff wise, and programming wise. You tell your staff what was, and won't ever happen again and the first sign or hint of it returning would be an immediate dismissal. A colleague tells me that in a broadcasting class at one of DFW's colleges/Universities Tyler Longview was used as a study model, and KYKX was demonstrated as a poorly managed and owned station. The assignment was how one could make it better. The over all answer was "clean house", and change the call letters . "They are a stigma".
Edited by edwardrmurrow on 06/21/05 05:46 PM.

of course this assumes that access 1 will do the smart thing and move the ranch format to 105.7 and so far access 1 hasn't really impressed me with doing the smart thing. Case in point Dru's still on at KYKX heard him this morning talking with intern who actually sounded pretty good he was talking aqbout it being a ozone action day and he had no clue what that meant granted I'm not sure myself what that is BUT I'm not on the air telling people that either.

As "they" say, "A textbook example," with a chapter titled, "Don't Let This Happen to You."

Maybe so...but a stinky radio station, regardless of location, still stinks!

Good idea! "The Blaze"'s upper demos are just ripe for the pickin'. Another option would be to leave 104.1 as is, blowing up KYKX, making way for...

"Rock 105!"

What? I'm just sayin'. You wanna talk about vulnerable? Look no further than 96X. According to them, the history of rock and roll ends at 1990. East Texas still needs a station that targets the generation that grew up during the end of the hair band era and the beginning of grunge(Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, etc.) The Woodstock generation ain't getting any younger, and the Lollapalooza generation is at the age where they're starting families, working good-paying jobs, and making major purchases like cars and houses. Go after 96X's younger demos and watch the fun as they go into panic mode!

I'm not so sure I'd move the Ranch to 105.7. To date, they've done pretty well on the smaller signal with the niche format that is The Ranch...and the Ranch, due to its natural demographic, will probably always be a difficult sell. Save that fat 105.7 frequency for a cash cow of a format. Some of you guys are currently in-market (I'm not), so where's the format hole?
