seems like i can not keep up with whether i am coming or going because everything in the world is changing! i heard that KSML in Lufkin is changing their format, then a friend of mine said he was listening to KAFX and they sounded different like they were going to become a top 40 station.

Interesting... maybe they'll battle each other? :)

I can't imagine what KSML would become.

Yates dumped oldies from KYBI (formerly KUEZ), is trying a variety hits top 40 type format there.

His only run at country (other than the afternoon show on KRBA) in recent memory was KVLL before he sold it to Bill Vance.

70s format was okay on the former Y101.9, but became outdated. So he tried Hot A/C.

I could see a top-40 format working at 101.9, but 100.1's format would have to be tweaked. Anyone have the skinny? Are they hiring?

Formats I think would work in Nac-Lufkin:

Adult Contemporary- Only competition is a satellite format on 94.7. If one could transplant a "Sunny 106.5" there, I think it would do well.

Urban A/C- THe only urban formats that have been tried there leaned too rythmic. Focus more on R&B and less on Rap, and I think you could both pull numbers, and convince advertisers their spots would be heard by responsible adults and not 12-year olds who are "thuggin'".

I can't believe spanish isn't floating Yates boat.

CHR-Pop- oh, wait. THis would require money, talent (meaning personalities and programming staff) and investment in promotions. No one will try that.

Country- Kicks is the Country Leader, but with good programming, tight playlists, and great personalities and promotions, another country station could make a run at it. KJ 103 proved my theory in the late 90s, but lacked the longetivity of Kicks. The PD left, the airstaff turned over. Management changed, and the common vision and focus was lost, leaving the disjointed product they are producing now.

These formats are my favorite. If I were to sign on a station, I would go with A/C. But any format will work if the ownership and management want to do radio. Lufkin is one of those markets where good on-air product and good radio pay off. There is money to be made there. Finding people to do it is hard to come by. That goes for owners and employees.

Steve! Stevo! Stevarama! Making Copies!

Things are going well. Still working in Rusk at KWRW-FM (part time) while working fulltime at KWRW's sister Newspaper, the Cherokeean Herald.

Now, if I could ever live down Yak Boy.

David,,,Things are well. Working alot and trying to keep up with all the Houston radio changes that have been taking place lately....and hoping that I'M not one of them! As for a reunion,,,,I'm up for one anytime. I've only been back to the station in Lufkin once in the last 3 years,,to see the new Prophet Nex-Gen system. Take care and keep in touch.

Yak....you'll never live that down. Elise, Donna and Brent still refer to you in that way. By the way, didn't know if you knew or not, but Brent lives about 20 minutes away from us, Donna Jo moved down here early last year and is working for an oil company here in town,,she only lives about 5 minutes from us. Everyone is migrating south. Sounds like you've been busy,,,keep it up. Peace.

Steve,

Some of us migrated North. Now hanging at The Range in Dallas. Don't worry, you'll come out pretty damn good.

DAVID

and we're glad to have you!

What up Rixx!! Glad to see your still alive.. I'm a little surprised Elise is still putting up with you.. but stranger things have happened!!

Holla at me sometime bro!

Scott,,,,good to hear from you too. As for Elise,,,God Bless Her! By the way,,just welcomed a baby daughter to the family back in November. All is good.

Take care and yes we definately need to talk.

Congrats on the new addition Steve! Kelsi is about to turn 15, Shelby will be 13 this year and my baby just turned 5.. I feel so old!!! For the record; yes.. they do get more expensive the older they get.. :)

I'm glad you guys are having a family reunion...I have a group I'd like to bring too! ;D

BTW, what happened at KJ103? Everyone I know has been fired from there, some for no other reason than "you are not a part of our changes." ???

Okay, back to work for me....

Don't know what "really" happened there yak,,,just know that it started with me and Elise in Jan. of 04. I had just gotten out of the emergency room and went to work, on crutches,,,and ole Bill pulled me into the conference room and said,,"your services are no longer needed,,we're going in a different direction and you're not part of that". Considering I rebuilt his radio station from the ground up,,gave it an actual fighting chance in the ratings,,and made it sellable,,I thought he was crazy,,apparently I was right. In addition,,I was programming his station in Natchitoches and VT'ing mornings over there. I was probably making too much money,,that's always it. Since then everyone has left or been asked to leave. Carolyn got the axe and she was IN BUSINESS with Bill. After all those years of putting up with all that BS,,to get that kind of treatment was completely uncalled for. I heard that a couple of newby sales folks came in after they were fired from CC-Lufkin,,(according to my sources they were from the Beaumont cluster and were not to savvy) They came in and convinced Bill that they knew alot more than Carolyn,,evidently they succeeded and that's where they stand now. I'd really like to walk in the door over and see what's going on. It's almost like Bill doesn't want to succeed or make money with those stations...I can't figure it out. Anyway,,,that's the way it is in the radio biz. Nuf said! Peace Yak!

Looks like KYBI (Y100) flipped from their Dial-Global Satellite feed of "Bright AC", to another Dial-Global Satellite feed of "Rhythm Mix AC"... (rhythmic AC)

Thoughts?

KYBI's new format will have an uphill battle for selling... but it can work.

Maybe I haven't kept up with the market that well, but I thought KYBI was 101.9 and they were now Regional Mexican? I guess I missed a change or two.

KYBI is now 100.1 --- 101.9, also owned by Yates Broadcasting, is KSML, which is Regional Mexican.
