Ed Stolz Purchasing Two Stations from Beasley

Newsperson responds:

Yes one frequency is better than the other and Ed is buying the better one. Plus he much prefers to have a dance station than a country station.

Who's next to buy in las Vegars?

Newsperson

Dance, in vegas / thats good news to me : )

Dance is already on the air with a very weak signal on 94.5...The Vibe.

This is not true. 102.7 is a much better facility than 104.3. That's why Beasley is moving Coyote programming to the superior stick. 104.3 has had building penetration issues for years, especially in north Las Vegas.

Someone I know described Ed as a "mad scientist" when it comes to compression and engineering.

I wonder if any of the Beasley staff will work for Ed? I take it Sean Lynch is under contract with Beasley. He would have been the best PD for NOW since he's been associated with CHR for so long. I remember when him and Chet Buchanan worked together at Z100/Portland in the 80s. That was a great station.

The announcement I got emailed from R&R stated the following......

Silver State Communications has agreed to buy Beasley's KBET-AM 790
kHz and certain assets of KCYE-FM and KFRH-FM in Las Vegas for about
$15.25 million. Silver State will also get the "Star, 80's and more"
format heard on the 102.7 FM HD2 frequency but not an HD frequency in the
sale.

Does this mean they plan to resurrect the Star format on 104.3 (instead of NOW) as that signal doesn't broadcast an HD2 station?
I'm sure Ed will do Top 40. He loves the format. I don't know how compressed Now is currently but expect it to super compressed once Ed gets it. He loves compression. So do I...
Doesn't Ed like Alternative too? That was the format at KWOD from 1991 until about 2003 when he lost it. And KRCK started out with 80's Rock until he switched it to Mainstream Top 40. I don't think Top 40 is a given for his new Las Vegas Station?

My guess is that the NOW format will be kept (only moved to the 104.3). My gut feeling is that this sale has been in the works for a while and that his plans were to to go with NOW and the sports format. He just didn't want to go in and start these formats from scratch. This would have resulted in no ratings history and little billing for probably 6 months. With NOW and the new KBET having some ratings history, he'll be able to do better financially in the initial months.

If this wasn't the case, I'm not sure Beasley would have launched the NOW format and begun the switch to sports on KBET. It wouldn't make sense for them to do it as their sales revenue will be minimal on these stations between now and when the sale becomes final.

LV doesn't need another alternative station. Although Ed could buy 107.9 from Goldman Sachs.

I think it's a given especially since it's the current format that he's buying. Ed loves top 40. KWOD was CHR prior to going alternative. Alternative is in a funk right now but CHR isn't.

So why the frequency swap, is one signal significantly better than the other?
No, but Beasley's remaining FMs (96.3 and 102.7) will both be on the same tower. Make sense operationally.

Except they won't be, at least not right away. 102.7 is up at Mount Arden with channels 8/13, while 96.3 is on Black Mountain with most of the other FMs. There's a CP to move 102.7 to Black, but that was tied into a plan to build a new master-antenna system and tower up there, and I'm hearing that project is dead.

The master antenna on Black Mt. Henderson is a dead issue. Some of the bigger players pulled out and the rest of us couldn't do it ourselves.
