About 450k if I remember. His widow was asking 1.2 million... But I knew if somebody threw 600,000 in cash in her face she'd take it in the heartbeat$610,000 not bad in this market for stations. Didnt John pay 500k for the station?
Winnie is only 25 mi away from Beaumont Port Arthur. However the tower is closer to Port Arthur. It's not in Winnie but about 5 or so miles east... The station was starting to show up in the ratings.. But I knew that John's widow wanted to sell bad. If I'd had the cash I would have gone after it and it could have been moved closer to Beaumont.. I'm sure EMF will probably try to upgrade or move it to get better signal over the Beaumont area.. The land taxes are horrible where the transmitter site is right now.. Guess I got to go get my stuff in storage out of there lol..EMF has an extensive outreach program and 24/7 live counselor and advisers.
Winnie is a far suburb of Houston, and is totally served by the many Houston full signal stations on FM and by many of the AMs, too. Because it is wedged between Beaumont/Port Arthur/Orange and Houston, there is no way a commercial station can be of any real service today to such towns.
The model for OTA radio in the future is the one that works in Europe, Latin America and much of the world... national or regional networks with top talent... just like TV has done right from its beginning and radio did for its first several decades.
Yes, but it appears that the seller is moving out of markets where they don't have a sizable cluster.
The RDS on 1053 shows Beaumont, not Winnie or HoustonIt's possible that the use of K-Love in Houston was worked out at the same time that Univision agreed for EMF to use it in Los Angeles.
Secondly, Chambers County, where community of license Winnie is located, is part of the Houston-Galveston market according to Nielsen. However, Winnie is on the far eastern edge of Chambers county and the station actually broadcasts from a tower in Jefferson County. I believe the "home market" for KXXF is actually Beaumont-Port Arthur, despite Winnie being technically in another market's county.

No....... Univision wanted to move 105.3 off the beach....it owned 100.7 at the time...so it played musical COL...Salem later got 100.7...it was NOT involved in changing the COL...105.3 could move closer to Beaumont due to it being 4 channels off 104.5 and 106.1 but 104.9 in Lake Charles, which WAS on 105.3 originally but Univision payed to it's downgrade and move north to Ragley from Vinton with the COL changing from Lake Charles to Town Bluff, still holds KXXF from moving much further east. John Walton didnot want to spend a million+ moving the TX site to a new tower..One thing I always thought curious was why Salem (may have been Univision's at the time) KKHT 100.7 changed CoL from Winnie to Lumberton, when Lumberton already had 1300 (which I know you are familiar with).
Had 100.7 stayed with Winnie, then that would probably free up 105.3 to more easily move further into BPA.
I wouldn't be so sure about that... EMF's got the resources to make these buggers go away.K287BQ will keep K-Love’s signal out of Houston.
Tax free.I wouldn't be so sure about that... EMF's got the resources to make these buggers go away.
Of course, any business that has no profit would not pay income taxes.Tax free.
Rightfully so, just like any other non-profit. If you'd like to start a non-profit tax exempt radio group, nobody's stopping you.Tax free.
Or just buy them out.I wouldn't be so sure about that... EMF's got the resources to make these buggers go away.
It would be crazy if it takes EMF to make the FCC do their job here.I wouldn't be so sure about that... EMF's got the resources to make these buggers go away.
I wouldn't be surprised. EMF is, if I'm not mistaken, the largest holder of FCC radio licenses. It would be crazy if it takes EMF to make the FCC do their job here.
EMF has already dealt with one translator headache here in Houston: It did help get the original 103.5 translator (located near the Galleria) shut down, when that facility was spewing out some of the most distorted and overmodulated garbage that I have ever heard on the radio…absolutely unintelligible and unlistenable. It would be crazy if it takes EMF to make the FCC do their job here.
Probably not. I feel like they just want a strong enough signal for around Houston. Also I have heard that translator up in Coldspring which is actually the same distance as Winnie is from that translatorYou think the translator had any interest in covering past Baytown?
I would not agree about the fcc being incompetent they are very much aware of the issue, but I guess it's all about who you know.EMF has already dealt with one translator headache here in Houston: It did help get the original 103.5 translator (located near the Galleria) shut down, when that facility was spewing out some of the most distorted and overmodulated garbage that I have ever heard on the radio…absolutely unintelligible and unlistenable.
The horrible signal was slopping over onto 103.7, causing severe interference to KHJK and its Air1 programming. In its FCC complaint, EMF described the 103.5 operation as “sordid”, and they were right…the translator was shut down (the current translator on 103.5 is a different license.)
Although KXXF is aimed at B/PA there is the possibility of EMF discovering the interference to its western coverage due to the overpowered K287BQ and filing a similar objection. Perhaps we should let EMF know (if they don’t already) that K287BQ still lacks an originating station, which could be more ammunition for any complaint.
I agree that the FCC has been totally asleep and incompetent in regard to dealing with translator issues here in Houston.
