Emily Rooney's "Beat The Press" Takes on WRKO

You, sir are mired in the Gekko mentality of "Greed Is Good" and morality sucks.
If the 1950's which were really before my time had the moral center that would not fire 9 employees a week before Thanksgiving then start up the time machine for this poster.

he'd be a fool not to read this board.

He needs to avoid this board because the hysterical laughter resulting from the rantings of the resident WRKO-bashers here would leave him unable to actually get any work done.

Your premise is that anyone who reads this board is supposed to take seriously posters who describe two of his managers as "human excrement" because they made a business decision, who think radio is still mired in the 1950s and who think that even though they've never worked in radio a day in their lives they know how to program a station that human beings would actually listen to. If you actually understood a hundredth of what you think you do, you'd realize that this goes on all the time. After all, those who can, do, and those who can't...well, you know the rest.

I think we can all agree that the timing of the firing was cold. Damn cold. Why didn't the ice men do it in September or wait until Jan? The honest non-obsessed here can also agree that not too many people were rushing to their radios each morning to hear which story hitched from the globe the wrko news team was going to lead with. If they saved, say, 500,000 bucks a year, by dumping the award winning globe story re-writers, that's money that can be well spent on a morning show. Good management decision coldly executed.

>>>Good management decision coldly executed.

not good, 'rko sounds lousy w/o the news team...

1) Firings right before the holidays went on the 1950s too. Anytime the end of the year approaches, with fiscal-year bottom lines hanging in the balance, that's when salaries (the most expensive single line item in any corporate budget) get trimmed.

2) I'm not mired in anything except reality, which a) you think has something to do with "morals," and b) you resolutely refuse to accept. Please do yourself and the rest of us a favor, and get yourself a clue.

The fact is that firing the SEVEN (not nine; you were corrected on that once already) news people was not your decision, will not be reversed by you, and will certainly not be reversed by airing your borderline-scatalogical disapproval on a message board. But, go ahead and rant. That's what you excel at.

By the way 'RKO needs to update their website which still lists:
"WRKO FIRST NEWS...WRKO News Director Rod Fritz anchors WRKO FIRST NEWS, with live reports from WRKO's Paul Tuthill on the top local news story of the day. Also LIVE updates from ABC Radio News"

Not only is the staff gone but I believe they aren't running/paying for ABC anymore (how does that work:
did they pay to carry ABC, or did they carry it for free as long as they ran ads?). As far as I know it's
only Fox news, and the Metro/Shadow reports.

you get angrier each time jason, get help quick, 9 fired including john & jimmy...

Justifiable anger for the RKO SEVEN ! But will cheer when the "Executioner" meets her fate as all her types do in time.
Bad karma begets bad karma.

nobody supports him so you gave yourself away...

the bottom line is that the station delivers a broken product.

At least Majorie Clapprood is going to bring a different point of view - a Deval point of view, if you will.

BUT, we can challenge WRKO all we want to give us better educated, wittier, clever on-air talent.
They don't want to pay for it. They just shovel a bad product out and they don't want any criticism
whatsoever.

If WRKO was Walmart you could at least bring the broken product back. "This DePetro doll won't shut up,
and it keeps hurling epithets" - "No problem, customer, can we trade you the Moe Lauzier series of baseball cards?"

"No, thank you. But I'll take this credit and purchase a Rod Fritz or a Listo Fisher statuette."

"Sorry, customer, we've discontinued those items."

Holiday shopping at WRKO. Maybe we should file a thousand complaints with the Better Business Bureau?

The Nancy Shack doll keeps expanding at an exponential rate, even after you turn the hot air machine off.

julie & jason should get "thin skin" awards...

:-\

Just a comment on an earlier comment PANAGO made (I think it was on Page 2 of this thread?):

"How many radio stations are currently being 'programmed' by people who don't have the slightest clue about what they're 'supposed to be doing?' ???

I know there are very few PD's who will step up to the plate and admit that they don't completely understand their job? So here comes the silent answer:

"The proof of a radio station's success is not only in the annual revenue...but in the product that's escaping over the air!" ;D

"Gave yourself away?" What sort of fantasy-land do you live in anyhow? Do you really think Jason has nothing better to do that come here and read your complaints?

I guess everyone is entitled to their fantasies...

YES

That's the government's fiscal year. Corporate fiscal years can run the gambit..Many use a Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 calendar. One company I worked for used a Nov. 1 to Oct. 31 calendar.

YES

Only if Julie puts a couple of phone books on the chair so he can see the screen.... Oh, that wasn't called for, was it....?

The Count makes fun of Ms. Shack's weight. Lucy Lu makes fun of Jason's height. Casablanca does the same.
Grow up the three of you. I'm in agreement that WRKO sounds terrible, but the personal attacks blunt your argument.

YES

Let's review: He's VP of sports programming for the entire company and PD of two large-market stations. Sorta changes that YES to a NO.

But, go right ahead with your fantasy, if it makes you feel good...
