Emmis Exits Indianapolis Radio

The WNOW calls going to 96.3 does not mean that BBN is also getting the rest of the Radio Now intellectual property, as the article implies (Lance, feel free to correct me).

Emmis still has that to sell off to another operator, however the same thing was said about the IP of WRQX in DC when Cumulus sold the station to EMF, but that ultimately never came to fruition.
BBN is NOT getting the IP of Radio Now or any other brand. They are getting the WNOW-FM call letters, but they're not even likely going to keep them. It's in the contract so that Radio One guarantees it retains WHHH ahead of closing as the swap will be done beforehand.

Other than a handful of stations that retained their heritage calls from previous Christian formats, all of Bible Broadcasting's stations use Y as their second letter and usually F or B as their third such as WYFQ in Charlotte, KYFW Wichita, or WYBK Chattanooga.

I always wondered why a group did not use the "T", which in lower case is most like the Christian cross, as part of their image. Or perhaps some do, but I have not seen that use.

I remember it being "Hoosier Hot 96" in 1999. That and 95.9 were the only two stations I couldn't get on my home stereo during my few months in Indy that year despite living right in town. Not being able to get WPZZ 95.9 didn't surprise me as it was south of town while I was on the northside, but I figured I'd be able to get 96.3. I did live practically underneath the big antenna farm, but I could still get a few out of market stations, including WKOA 105.3 and WWKI 100.5. 96.3 was nothing but noise.

Radio Now was successful when it was at 93.1. Of course, that was more than 10 years ago. I can't see anyone else wanting it either. If Cumulus were still having problems with 93.9, I'd say it should put the format there to block any potential competitor. 93.9 X, though, does better than Radio Now does today. Plus, I'm not aware of any Cumulus markets where it has multiple CHR's. It even took 93.9 out of the CHR battle after it got ZPL. A handful of operators, Cumulus included, provide their own competition with a couple derivatives of country or AC, but the CHR pie can't be sliced nearly as much, especially today.

So we trade the Hot format for reruns of J. Vernon McGee, prayer requests and hymns for the last day of your life.

Radio Now is a failed brand. Who is going to want it? Cumulus already has ZPL. Why would iHeart want it. They have better brands in-house. It never made that big of a dent in Indiana and it also flamed out in Houston.
Hence my comment referencing the demise of WRQX and Cumulus ending up not selling off its IP. Just because it is put up for sale doesn't mean it will be purchased.

Prediction time: When the sale is approved, I see BBN installing them a satellite and going the main studio waver route. After all, they don't need a one to broadcast from. They already do their programming from one place. Having a studio there would be a waste of money and resources. After all, all of the big boy styled Christian radio networks tend to do it.

P.S. If I'm reading things right, BBN is only getting the frequency, the WNOW calls, tower and transmitter site, once the sale is finalized.

I'm with you @lanceventa. I see BBN changing the calls, once they become the new owner(s) of this station.

No need, the main studio rule is no longer in effect.

I never knew the 96.3 signal was that bad, but I've never been to Indy either.

New Calls Have been announced for what will be Bible Broadcasting Networks 96.3 mark down WYHX the change will happen upon closing of the U1/ Emmis sale.

The potential confusion arising from WHHH's move from 96.3 to 100.9 potentially creates an opportunity for 98.3 to gain some ratings.

I am eager to see if 103.3 flips soon, as rumored. While I suspect Variety Hits or some sort of Retro Hits format are the most likely possibilities, I certainly would not rule out All Sports or CHR/Pop.
