Entercom Boston

I'm not sure if Audacy is necessarily a handicap on the Classic Hits format, considering that 105.9 Sunny FM in Orlando is #1 in the market. Also CBS-FM in New York reached #1 in the books a few times.
OK, I am only referring to their overall track record, not limited to, but including all of their stations in the Boston market.

Did Entercom ever consider WROR?

I was told by someone in the know it went this way.

1.) Entercom/CBS owned too many stations in Boston...including two sports stations.

2.) Beasley CEO/President wanted to get into the sports game because she heard there was a lot of (sports) money out there that they were not getting a shot at. She makes a pitch to Entercom/CBS

3.) Entercom decides to spinoff Sports Hub, instead of WEEI....for unknown reasons....in a station swap.

4.) Beasley offers to swap every station in the cluster....and Entercom responds by saying "The only way were giving you the Sports Hub ($$$) is if you give us Magic ($$$) in return"..because they are the best biller, and additional cash.

Entercom never had any interest in attaining any of the Beasley stations for the Sports Hub.

I heard a rumor that, believe it or not, Entercom had some loyalty to their already owned stations. This is why they supposedly spun off The Sports Hub in lieu of WEEI instead.

I seem to remember both WBZ-FM and WEEI-FM were top-3 billers at the time, and the top-3 were close in numbers. The bottom didn’t seem to drop out at 'EEI until a year or two ago. If I had to get rid of one of the top-3 billers in the market and there weren’t a wide gulf between them, I might not care so much which one I sold.

My recollection is that when the Sports Hub debut at 98.5, WEEI was on AM....and STAYED on AM for 2 more years before the company saw fit to give them an FM signal.

In those 2 years, the Sports Hub rose to the top, and solidified their position as the prominent sports station.

When the time came to spin off one of their spots stations, Sports Hub was clearly the dominant sports station.

Let's remember that WEEI-FM is the flagship for the Red Sox. Yes, WBZ-FM has the other important sports franchises, Patriots, Bruins & Celtics. But I would guess Entercom believed the Red Sox franchise brings in the most $$$.

WEEI-FM shows are fed to other sports stations around New England. So maybe that's another source of revenue. WBZ-FM doesn't syndicate its shows.

And I've also read about Entercom's loyalty to its original stations, acquired before the CBS Radio deal.

This is true.

Look at Seattle, for example. They kept their incumbent 100.7 The Wolf intact and disemboweled 94.1 KMPS and flipped it to Soft AC, even though KMPS was the better revenue performer.

While baseball games involve a long period of time from pregame to postgame, they must do well enough to earn ad money for the entire broadcast--and the season is 162 games plus pre and possibly postseason, much longer than the other sports. So WEEI not only syndicates its talk shows but also has the network of stations carrying Sox games for a source of revenue. There must be some revenue is
selling those rights.

For B's, C's and Pats, Sports Hub too has a network of stations to carry games but as said does not syndie the talk shows. The 98.5 signal does cover quite a bit but not all of New England.
