Entercom HDs (WEEI on WKAF HD2)

I should mention last night I gave a spin around the dial of the FM-HD portable. I found quite a few
of the HD signals were on-- in fact it seems like WZLX has an HD3 now, or maybe I didn't notice them before? Some kind of rock format (WZLX-HD2 is blues). Signals like WKLB's Classic Country,
WROR's Nothing But the 70s, WGBH's WCRB and WCAI signals, WTKK's Irish, and the WBZ-FM signals of WBCN Classic and WBZ-AM. And WEEI on WKAF-2.

The "main" signals of stations like WMJX, WROR, etc. sounded pretty good--you had to wait a moment for the HD light to stop blinking as it kicked in fully. Once that happened you could get the
HD2s and HD3s, too. They claim HD sounds better (on the main HD-1 signals esp.). It does, in some ways, as long as you can get a clear signal--not overwhelmingly excellent but slightly better.
Like "FM Wide" vs. "FM Stereo", or "FM Stereo" vs. "FM Mono"
As said before, WAAF supp. has WEEI on the HD2 and I think even WRKO on the HD 3. But I could
only get the HD-1 where I am. The theory of putting those signals on the WAAF makes sense,
as both have problems to the west, and if you can get WAAF pretty good out there, you can
tune in to WEEI/WRKO on the HD2 and HD3s..

...And for those having trouble with WXKS AM at night, etc., the 107.9-HD2 has them clearly.

...oh wait, what am I thinking--WZLX's HD3 is Free From BCN (acc to Wikipedia). I can't
remember getting it before or maybe I did but forgot!

it seems wrko is on wkaf and waaf according to the toh id!! i haven't checked as of yet,i can get waaf hd3 here as well as hd2 which is no matter since i have 103.7 and 98.5 anyhow!!

It doesn't quite help me as I can barely get 107.3's main signal here in Beverly. btw you wonder if Ent. would bother putting RKO on WMKK's signal but hey, RKO's sticks are in Burlington and this area gets the signal pretty well already...so they may figure why bother. I do note that WAAF has both WEEI and WRKO, as you say, and both stations suffer after dark due to change of direction etc.
(As the old drop WEEI used to play said, "Hello! I'm calling to wonder what is happening to WEEI in the evenings...")

I wrote a long post to boston-radio-interest just now wondering about HD. Will it be bought by the masses? So far, not quite--because most people could care less, apparently, about the "extra stations" and the supposedly better sound. Someone like me noticed the good FM recep on that
portable Insignia--Cape stations, etc.--and I can appreciate the "extra stations" but most people may be content with just what they get with regular radio. (If anything, people who do want more variety might find it's cost effective vs. satellite radio--no monthly fee--but sat. radio has a lot of stuff HD can't offer, like all the sports play by play, the audio portion of stations like CNN or
Fox News, traffic and weather, etc. But some of the local HDs are offering formats that sat radio has, too--classic country, Nothing But 70s, Irish--in fact there may not nec. be Irish music on
sat radio--and the selling line could be "you can get these formats and only have to pay once,
not a monthly fee!" Then again sat radio isn't all that much, maybe $15/mo., 50 cents a day?

If you can afford it...of course here you're paying $300+ all at once, whereas with satellite radio $15/mo adds up after awhile too (unless you look at it as "50 cents a day, per month...")

You may have a point there Racoon. I like 'Radio Mojo" on WZLX HD2. I also like your blues show on WMWM as well as the jazz shows there, but most people want to hear the same 250 songs over and over. Hopefully they will work out the technology better for HD. There ought to be a better variety than what is on standard radio now.

Thanks...glad you listen, incl. to our jazz. But it is true, most people like 250 songs over and over. At work we can't get too many FM stations on the workroom floor, but I go by boomboxes blaring Mike 93.7--they must like it (the other station that comes in well is WCRB and I get the feeling most people processing mail aren't quite interested in Handel's 3rd movement of his 5th symphony, but
Love Shack by the B52s has a nice beat and you can...work...to it!) :)
