Entercom picks up Howie Carr's option

Re: WRKO keeping Howie on for the foreseeable future

Good points Moonchild. But WRKO doesn't care how many people listen to Barry as long as he checks clears, which it always does. Barry really doesn't care how many people listen as long as enough of them who do visit his office and buy an insurance annuity.

The Screaming Mimi who as I think Dan Kennedy said, sounds like a woman screaming off the back porch of an East Boston three decker and I say has a face for radio and a voice for newspapers would do herself and her listeners a great service and stuck to topics like what is your favorite movie and what was the worst uniform who had to wear at work. When she takes on a serious topic she embarrasses herself and fills the airwaves with misinformation do to limited knowledge and a refusal to do basic research.

During a segments about the Chick Fil A controversy she kept asking where is the ACLU and said the ACLU was to busy with loony left causes. However, the ACLU issued statements supporting Chick Fil A's right to operate and would defend them if they were denied business permits.

.......The Howie loyalists might now feel like Luke Skywalker did upon learning his true lineage........... is it all an act?.....

Of course it was. As a number of us who have at least a passing professional acquaintance with him have been saying for years, there is ONLY one thing Carr cares about. And now, even his most ardent water carrier must get it.

So, for everyone who bought into the "poor signal at night....Sox preempts....dopey management...AM is history....FM is my destiny...I'm outta here.....can't wait to blow this pop stand and be free of these jerks BS, Howie has just one word...SUCKERS!

Regards,
TSB

WRKO needs Howie Carr more than Howie Carr needs WRKO.

It's my understanding that had WTKK-96.9 been able to land Carr some years back that he would have been on in the morning.

Might WRKO move Howie to morning drive??

Yeah I get it and wasn't surprised this happened. Better luck in 2 years HC, if there's still interest left in
poli-talk etc (and you) by then..I'll still be interested, but that's just me (I like Howie--but as Chuck Barris
would say, 'Then again, I like root canals..')

Mr. Carr claims he can do the remainder of his time "standing on his head."

Considering he has been phoning in both his column and his radio program for years, that's not hard to believe. And talk of being at war with your employer is an old, old, old talk radio routine.

Carr's appeal is partly due to the paucity of talk talent in the market. Severin, Graham and Katz are not top talent and never will be. His influence in the talk genre, such as it is, depends on competing talk stations being devoid of talent. Sooner or later one of the people programming a talk station is going to find a real talent and Carr's significance in the market will be martinalized.

Unfortunately, too many programming decisions at Boston area talk stations are made by ad execs turned managers rather than programmers. Remember, the GM of the last Boston talk station to be No. 1 came up on the programming side. He was also PD of the only other Boston talk station to be No. 1.

Oh, and did you see the lack of any reference to Kahn in the press release? Anyone want to say "gee he got that right" when he suggested Kahn had been demoted and given a face-saving title? And anybody want to say "gee he got that right" when he pointed out Carr either had a stupid lawyer or didn't listen to a smart lawyer?

Howie's listeners are aging indeed (me among them) but he must have something or else Entercom would have not renewed him in '07--and this year. Phoning it in? If his ratings and billing weren't at least half decent they would have let him go and turned to anything from True Oldies to McPhee to colon cleanser informercials.
Maybe it is a paucity of talent (elsewhere, plus at RKO) but there aren't any up and coming hosts out there? But yes, maybe they don't know what the heck they are doing. Otherwise we would get a PR like "Entercom and Howie Carr have decided to go their separate ways. The Garrett Quinn show premieres next week,
3-7 pm." But no they renew Howie. YOU YOUNG WHIPPER SNAPPERS GET OFF MY LAWN! HOWIE IS ON! :)

And who in their right mind listens to the midnite to 5am show?
It's OK for about 15 minutes per hour (which is about half of their hourly time clock), but you have to sit through Owner Operator Report and Non-Specific Superficial Weather Forecast. Plus every so often they turn their show over to some gomer pushing his truck lube.
Who listens on weekends? Anyone?
I did until 2 weeks ago when they got rid of the only show in any time slot anywhere that I would go out of my way to hear, Pundit Review.

Waiting to hear back but someone on Free Republic's MA board said there's supposed to be a "major programming change" being announced today by Howie at 4 pm. I asked if they heard this on RKO
today, what's it about...we know he's stuck there 2 more years. ...Mornings...? Or an announcement of
850 going ESPN, but what's that got to do with Howie? (Other than the fact that had Howie been allowed
to leave it could've been ESPN 680...)
